Well, not quite cardboard, Dan'l, but some sort of molded plastic crud.  Be careful prying the "darts" out of the holes in the body... the metal clips holding

Hi Testing of the head is on low temp. but crack is apear on high temp. It can cheat.

Re: Strong Gasoline Smell
I should add that in cases where the strong gas smell had to do with either a fuel pump or a petcock on a motorcycle, the fuel smell, while always present,
