Bill, Just for future reference you first have to loosen that nut in the center of the pulley. Once the belt is adjusted you then need to tighten the nut....

The other wire should be ground. Not having ground, the alternator wont charge. You can simply attach a ground to engine and confirm function of alternator. ...

i wouldn't expect a front diff to go bad at 152,000 miles. but it certainly is possible, anything can break and noone has probably ever changed the diff fluid...
