What are the differences in the VR6 in my 1999 EuroVan and the VR6's
in Jetta's, etc.

I need to replace my engine and thought it might be easier to find an
engine from a Jetta or Passat.

TIA

Hi Tom, I just realized that when I responded to your post, I
accidentally sent it to your email and not to this group. Just wanted
to say thanks for the info.

Kevin,

I had a 1995 Jetta GLX with the Thule rack. It was set up for bikes, but you could certainly strap a bag carrier on it. The glass roof opens just fine with the rack installed, however the bars create significant wind noise at highway speeds, so you probably won’t want to have it open. I have seen some racks with fairings on the front. They probably cut down noise and drag, but I don’t have experience with them. $360 sounds about right.

Another idea is to just strap the bag carrier to the roof. You should be able to shop around for a bag with straps and hooks that attach much like the roof rack.

Also, on a cross country trip, consider security. The Thule hard case with a lock is much more secure than a soft bag. I guess it depends on what you are carrying!

Hey all, I am planning a cross country (US) road trip and need some
additional storage space for my 1998 Jetta GLX car (not a wagon). I am
thinking of picking up a Thule 444 Base Rack and some type of Bag
Carrier. Looking at Thules site, it looks like I need to purchase the
base rack first and then the bag carrier second, with the total
ballpark price of about $360.00us - does this sound right. Also, I have
been hearing a lot about the rack being very noisey and that I won't be
able to open my moon roof once the rack is installed, is this the case?
thanks, Kevin.

Hello all, after about 6 months of troubleshooting and a complete
clean reinstall of my machine yesterday, I finally realized that my
cpu spiking issue is the dreaded denorm issue and not a pci buss
issue. Here are my specs - Intel P4 3.0GHz/Intel 865G Chipset/Windows
XP Sp2/Cubase SX 3.02.623/Stylus RMX - all latest patches etc. System
is configured exceptionally well and can be pushed very hard with
other plugs and vstis. Unfortunately it seems to be only happening
with my most important vsti - RMX. Here's an example - I currently
have rmx loaded with 8 grooves playing and maybe an effect or two. My
cpu is averaging about 25% (not bad at all). Now every once in a
while, without doing anything the cpu will overload and all audio
will dropout. This seems to happen quite a bit when doing things with
rmx, but not with my other vstis (including my other spectra
products). I took a look digitalfishphones normalizer plug, but that
doesn't work for vstis like rmx. Does anyone have a solution?? I am
getting desperate to get this stabalized as I am prepping things to
start playing live and I can't have the cpu overload and drop out on
stage!!

btw - I have really tweaked my system - I have no screen saves, power
saving features etc. - essentially nothing is "kicking" in when the
cpu overloads.

thanks.

Your ignition switch is sticking in the "start" position, when you put the clutch in, it is engaging the starter. Try wiggling the steering wheel while you put pressure on the key to see if you can get it to turn, it sounds lock a bad lock cylinder. It could also be a severly worn ignition swtich. Either way, even paying someone to fix it shouldnt be that expensive.

Group. Thanks for all your help on my last issue, the A/C white smoke thing. By the way the A/c and the heater work great now and we have not had any more white vapor come through the vents.
Now,,,, The neutral safety switch clicks noticeably when depressed and as soon as the engine fires, the clutch emits a very loud grinding sound. Every time one shifts the grinding sound happens unless the clutch is depressed just enough to engage, but not enough to activate the NSS. The key gets kind of glitchy when this is happening and the stereo cuts out when this happens also. This only happens about 10% of the time when the ignition is turned on or the car started. It did it again this morning and now we went to leave in the afternoon, and the key will not turn at all. Anybody want to buy a cheap VRG???

    Are you *SURE* about that?

I have not seen any mention of any such control of coolant flow through
the heater core. As far as I know, coolant flows through the heater
core ALL the time. The temperature knob controls a flap in a Y junction
in the ventilation passage. The flap directs all or none the air flow
    across the heater core.

With the knob on full hot, all of the air flows across the heater core.
With the knob on full cold, no air is directed over the heater core.
Which is why steam stops coming out of the vents with the knob on full
    cold.

Dang, I would hope car makers don't put in such a tray & drain to catch
dripping coolant, 'cause such a tray would mean they expect the car to
be losing coolant at a non-trivial rate!

Such "catch tray" and drain pipe would be more to catch water moisture
condensing off of the A/C evaporator. (On my 95 GTI VR6, that drain
pipe lets out in the middle of the firewall, behind a flap in the
    silver-foil insulation.)

Where did you have the temperature control when this
happened?

This sounds like a classic case of a heater core that
sprung a leak. If you have the temperature control
turned all the way to cold, no coolant will be
circulating to heater core. If it ruptured with the
temperature control in the cold position, no new
coolant would flow into the heater core. If you wait
for the car to heat up, and then turn the temp.
control to hot, I suspect you'll reproduce what you
described in your e-mail.

Leaking heater cores always have the symptoms you
describe: the sweet smell of antifreeze and the hazy
film on the windows. You can't always expect to find
antifreeze leaking into the footwell of the car - some
cars actually have a tray to catch any leaking
antifreeze and drain it to the exterior of the car
through the firewall.

Cool! We were in Vegas back in June gambling & celebrating our
    18th!

It's the heater core. Mine went the same way a few months ago.
The vapor is coolant steam, hence the slipperiness.

> It stopped a couple of minutes after
> turning off the A/C.

Did you turn off the fan at the same time? The heater core is in the
ventilation passage. (It's basically a mini-radiator. It extracts heat
from engine coolant. When you turn up the temperature knob, air is
diverted through the heater core & is heated up prior to being blown
into the cabin.) Turning off the fan reduces the steam being blown
    into the cabin.

> The temp gauge was not above normal, an underhood
> inspection didn't reveal anthing alarming and the high
> temp idiot light did not come on.

It's probably a leak small enough so you didn't lose too much coolant
& the engine didn't overheat. Check the coolant level regularly from
now on: you'd probably notice it going down gradually over time.

> The trip home, (150 miles,A/C off)
> was uneventful with the exception that we could smell the sweet odor

It'd take a LONG time to get rid of the coolant smell! Mine was fixed
three months ago, and even today I'm still getting coolant smell out
    of the vents.

My heater core blew recently. I called VWoA and spoke to a
"customer care representative". I asked since watercooled VWs are
prone to heater core failure, whether there is anything that can
be done. She asked how many miles is on the car ("73000"), how
long have I had it ("since 1994"), am I the only owner ("yes").

She said there is no recall for heater core failure, however VW is "very
sensitive to heater core failure issues" She said to schedule a service
appointment with a dealer for an initial investigation, then call her
back with the appointment date. The dealer will look into the problem
     & talk to VW.

Well, dealer looked at the problem, called VW, and VW covered the
heater core R & R. So, give VWoA a call. Worst thing they can do is
to say no. Remember to be polite and non-pushy. Business sense
says they SHOULD cover it, but they are not obligated to, so don't
burn the bridge before you cross it |-) .

to run this by the group and see if any other's experiences might shed
some light on other possibilities.

Hi
Im hoping someone could suggest what could be wrong with my 94 corrado vr6.
About once every couple of days whilst driving round town, the engine will start to misfire and will not rev, it will do this for about 10 seconds then cut out, after restarting the engine everthing will be fine until the next time.
I have changed the plugs checked the leads and connections, i suspected the coil pack because i ocassionally get this weird sound that i can only describe as a clicking sound, it is very intermittent and you can hear the revs just drop a little after every click...
Any help would be most appreciated as this problem is driving me crazy..

ps : i cannot get into my driver side door as the 'little lever' has snapped, anyone know if this is a difficult job for someone who knows hardly anything about fixing cars or is it trip into the garage for a vastly inflated bill..?

Thanks

If and only if it is the coil pack remember. I am in a club of other vw enthusiasts (ohiovw.com) and have heard from many of them that the epoxy method is good. But the epoxy is only a short fix. Usually when the plastic starts to go the whole coil pack is very close to going. So if the coil pack is going I would suggest to try to epoxy method but also order a one at the same time, it's getting ready to go. Also I've heard that the OEM pack works best, and lasts longer than the others in harsh conditions (hard driving and auto-x). But, that is just my opinion.

I agree.  I had the same problem about a year ago.  Although I opted for the new coil pack.  I bought it from BapGeon.  It is suppose to be a better version, one that doesn't crack as easily.  The problem with them cracking is the plastic that is used gets brittle when it gets hot.  If you can find one that has a composite shell you may not have to worry about it for a while.  BapGeon sold them back then but I am not sure now.  They are under new management now and many things have changed recently.

To check, locate the coilpack in your car. While you still have the
hood  open start the engine. If the engine is running smoothly, use a
spray bottle to spray water on the coil pack. If your engine behaves
like it did when the check engine light came on, you found your
problem. Then google for "VR6 coilpack epoxy" to learn how to fix. You
should come across plenty of helpful links, like this one.

If its a 12 valve, the first thing I would check is the coilpack. I am not familiar with the 24v motors at all, ie if they have only 1 coilpack, and if so, if its susceptible to the same failure as the earlier design.

I've got a Thule rack for my '97 GTI VR6. It's been on my car since
June of 1999. It's plenty study, and I've had as many as 3 mtn bikes
on it at once (with 3 velo vise trays), and it's handy for my kayak,
too. I even strapped a couch to it once, too.

I think all the big-name racks are overpriced (Thule, Yakima, etc.),
but it is strong an reliable as hell.

Be warned: once you put it on, you can forget about using your
moonroof - waaaay too much wind noise, and despite what Thule says,
the footpads WILL mark up your roof.

If you need a bike rack, I recommend the Velo Vise 2, or whichever one
is designed to accomodate disc brakes on the front fork. I got one
last year and I love it.

I am interested in picking up a roof rack from my 1998 Jetta Glx. I
would like it for my mountain bike, but also to carry luggage and the
sort for a cross country road trip I am planning. Just wondering if any
of you knew what would be a good rack for this car. thanks.

I don't recommend the VW bike rack that came with VW Trek promotion.
