I am seriously thinking of buying a Garrett chip for my 97 VR6 Jetta.
No
doubt there have been some good things said about it (and Garrett Lim
himself), the chip is cheap too ($125).
However, now I discover that Wetterauer has one recently released this
May.
It's more expensive ($300), but I've heard nothing but praises of their
1.8T
chip on A4.org's forum.
Anyone have experiences w/ chips that they'd like to share? I'd
consider
others as well, but just haven't heard as much overall praise as I have
for
these two companies.

$125.
Yes, I installed it...too easy!
May not void your warranty, check with dealer first.

Here are the unofficial results of the Garrett chip installation in my B3
GLX (auto):
0-60 mph= .6 second improvement (9.2 seconds)
60-90 mph= 1.3 second improvement (12.1 seconds)
These times were recorded using the "Rob Wolf stopwatch/yell at neighbor"
method.
Ambient temp was 91f (about 7> than OEM chip times).
Runs were repeated at least 5 times on flat or slightly uphill road and
results averaged.
I recorded MUCH better times (at least a full second) when I did the
shifting, but thought that might skew the results since OEM times were
recorded using the auto shift.
I wanted to remove any driver bias, so I just left it in Drive and punched
it. This results in a pretty big lag during initial take off, but at least
it's consistent.
One additional note, my bike rack was installed for the Garrett runs but not
for the OEM runs. Greater cd I'm sure, but significant? Don't know.
Overall, VERY satisfied with the chip, I bet if I did a tune up (way
overdue), my times might almost be respectable.
Rob
If anyone on these lists was at Waterfest the last three years, and spent
any time near the autocross, you will probably remember a really ugly Rabbit
with 13 x 10 inch rims and slicks. That car had a supercharger that the
owner (Sam is a good friend of mine) salvaged from a Thunderbird SC made
by.... Eaton.
For those of you who *really* want to do this but don't have $4000, this
supercharged rabbit was totally bolt on to an older Audi 2.0 liter engine.
It had a home made air to air intercooler, plumbing (made from copper sewage
piping found at the hardware store) and machined brackets. I don't know the
total cost, but I would expect that it was somewhere less than $1000
including the knock sensor. BTW, he had a quaife differential to get the
power to the ground. Top speed (verified by friendly state trooper) is over
150 mph.
This Rabbit was about the fastest thing at Waterfest, but didn't win the
autocross because of too many off-courses. Another point to be made for
good driving winning over powerful vehicles. :-)
See you on the 5th in NY!

Kelly,
Are you _certain_ that the pressure is bleeding off throught the
injectors and not back through the internal check valves of the fuel pump.
This is a common problem. There is a bulletin for it for a specific date
range of vehicles associated with a manufacturing problem. The "fix" is a
new piece of rigid plastic fuel line with a check valve built into it. I
personally experienced this problem on a vehicle outside this date range and
needed to replace the fuel pump ($$$). If you need a pump talk to Mike
Potter at www.parts4vws.com (new one) or Dustin at Ron's Parts (used one).

Here's what Turbo Tim posted to the GTI-VR6 list:

From: "New Dimensions" <turbotim@...>
Subject: [gti-vr6] Eaton Supercharger Kits
I have been trying to wait to release this info but figured it was time
to tell
people about the upcoming Eaton Blower kits.
There will be 3 main kits coming out in the next few months. The first
one will
be for the 4 cylinder models that Techtonics has the first batch on. The
second
and third kit will be for the VR6 and Beetle that New Dimensions will
have the
first batch on. Also kits for A2 and A1 4 cylinder models may be done in
the
future.
All of these kits are designed and made by Rick Rimmer in Colorado. He
has
been around the Eaton units for a while and builds kits for Rovers,
Jeeps and a
few others. His web address is http://www.rimmerenginc.com
We will be offering all the kits as well as taking pre-orders for those
who want
to be first on the list. We will take no money and will only add you to
a list in
which we will notify you when they are ready.
I know all of you have a thousand questions but I cannot answer many of
them
yet as the first kit is still in the final stages and we will have more
info like
pictures and dyno info in the coming months.
As for prices the VR6 kit will be $3995 and the 4 cylinder kits will be
$2995.
The Eaton blower is one of the best units on the market which is why GM,
Ford
and others use them.
Here is another website with blower info on it.

And here's what Jason Leone, a SC tester, posted:

From: Jason_Leone@...
Subject: [gti-vr6] [VR6] Eaton Kit out of the closet
All,
Ok, after months of me teasing you with juicy tidbits here and there,
it's
here. Tim from ND has posted his announcement on all relevant lists. I
now
have consent to stand on my soapbox and tell everything (thanks Tim, I
was
wondering if you were ever going public...).
As per Tim's post, he will offer the VR6 Eaton kit built and designed by
Rick Rimmer from Colorado. Rick has done many engines with the Eaton
unit,
and has done kits for many OEMs (Chrysler/Jeep/GM/Rover/etc.). His Rover
kit is reviewed in Four-Wheeler magazine, recently. He is currently
involved with OEMs in doing concept cars and many other projects.
The Eaton unit is bulletproof, and is designed to self-lubricate for
over
100,000 miles. The kit will utilise the Model 62 (62 c.i.) , and will
make
good use of Eaton's vacuum operated by-pass valve. The by-pass valve is
beautiful in function. When off throttle, the valve is open and the
engine
operates as normal (blower consumes about 1hp). Stomp the throttle, and
the
valve slams shut...hang on for the instant power. NO LAG. High boost
levels
are found at low rpms (due to the design of a positive-displacement
Roots
type blower like the Eaton). Centrifugal blowers compress the air charge
using inertia. As the impeller spins, it flings air particles outward
due
to centrifugal force. This increases the density as rpms increase.
Result?
Max boost at max rpms, but....boost is in direct proportion to rpms.
Example: let's say a centrifugal blower makes 8psi at 6800 rpms on the
VR6.
At only 3400 rpms, the boost will be 4psi, at 1750 rpms..boost is a
dismal
2psi. How does this affect you? A flat bottom end...until about 4k rpm,
then a peaky hang on rush of power. No peaky power band with the Eaton,
just steady hard pull from the start.
No irritating whine. More like a 'whire' sound. The helical swept rotors
in
the Eaton reduce excessive noise levels, but it's just loud enough to
remind you (and other stoplight warriors) where the power is coming
from.
Rimmer Engineering will be performing mods to the intake manifold to
allow
for proper mounting of the blower (it will sit close to the back of the
engine above the exhaust manifold). This will be a core-charge item done
on
an exchange basis. This also ensures both OBD I & OBD II are supported.
Brackets will be CNC machined to allow for timely inventory of kit
items.
An intercooler is the next stage, but is not included at this time. This
will be designed after initial release of the kit. Boost levels are
currently being tested as I write. Starting from 5-7psi, and possibly
higher. This should gross output between 250-280hp at the crank. We'll
see,
it's in testing. The throttle body will be moved about 10" from the
stock
position. Side draft air filter will be the intake.
Other options include custom headers included with the kit. As with
Rimmer
Engineering's Rover (already approved), and Jeep kits(pending approval),
CARB Exemption is expected. Like Tim said, $3995 for the VR6 kit.
Testing
is being done in a GTI currently. Corrado testing will be done by yours
truly, in the near future.
Install time should be about 5-8 hours with average hand tools. I will
install my own kit, and provide ample feedback to ND, and Rimmer
Engineering, and you will benefit from my experience. As things develop,
and more data comes up, I will post it.
Rimmer Engineering is also developing the Beetle SC kit exclusively for
ND.
So there you have it. Rimmer builds it, TT distributes the 4-cyl kit, ND
distributes the VR6 kit, and Rimmer is doing a Beetle kit for ND as
well.
Rimmer Engineering's web site is posted in Tim's announcement. An
article
about the 4-cyl kit will be published In European Car magazine (written
by
Mr. Sly of course) in an upcoming issue.

Ok, heres what this list is all for: discussing the value of various
modifications.
So most of us have, by now, seen the "press release" from New Dimensions and
others about the new Supercharger kit for VR6's and others. While 250 - 300
hp sounds enticing and exciting, I wonder what other things need to be
thought about when deciding whether to purchase this kind of bolt - on
horsepower.
Ralf, you got me thinking with your post about this $4000 supercharger kit
turning into a $6000 not-so-bolt-on-anymore modification.
#1 (Ralf's point): You *need* a Quaife or other limited slip differential.
The stock shims just can't handle this kind of power, and I don't know if
the AMS Shim kit can handle it either. The other thing is, my ABS already
comes on when accelerating out of a corner hard - I can only imagine how
frequently it would be cycling with this kit.
#2: This much power in a front wheel drive car is silly. Sure, my Dad's
Seville STS has more in a FWD vehicle, but it also weighs a ton more, has
all-season tires and isn't driven on the ragged edge every day. What I mean
is, it is a well know fact in Drag racing circles (according to Per
Schroeder and others) that Front Wheel drive vehicles in general, including
VWs, have slow 80 foot times. That is, they can't accelerate off the line
no matter how much power, sticky tires, drag suspensions they have. All
their acceleration is limited by wheel spin initially, and they have to make
up quick ETs after the tires hook up. While on the drag strip a 14 sec or
lower ET is possible, is this wise on a street car? I think not.
#3: $3995 buys quite a few weekends at Skip Barber Performance Driving
school, whose instruction will last a lifetime. I bet the Autocross/racing
enthusiasts on these lists will pretty much agree that the best place to
spend money is on yourself before the car. Get some seat-time in a stock
autocross car, or even at the local Go-kart track before dropping 4 grand to
make an already quick car unmanageably quick.
#4: What about Brakes? I bet the new kit doesn't include those, and while
the stock brakes are really quite good, we shouldn't forget that hauling a
3000+ pound vehicle down from 120 mph (or more) takes time. New Brakes
might help, but vehicle weight eventually becomes the limiting factor.
#5: For $6k I can buy a used IT car including trailer, and a couple of
weekends entry fees/fuel. I can tell you from experience that the rush from
driving 100 mph wheel to wheel with another rabbit into turn one at New
Hampshire Internation is a total rush - and can't be matched by anything
(well, except sex and motorcycling).
#6: Where can we use this kind of instant power on the street? On the
highway, maybe, but most of us live within the confines of speed limits,
cops, children in car seats blah blah blah. I know I can count on both
hands and feet the number of times I have been over 100 mph in the last 4
years. Not very good to admit that I suppose, but pretty realistic. I save
my foot to the floor antics for the race course.
How about that instant power for passing, you might say, on the
highway/in-town? Not really necessary. If you are in 5th gear, shift down.
It's a lot cheaper to shift, than do all this work.
#7: Finally, for 4 grand you can buy a motorcycle that'll out accelerate
any production car ever built, and will almost keep up with just about any
production based race car (No formula one responses please).
Am I missing the point entirely? Am I a disgrace to the performance VW
enthusiasts? I hope not, just trying to be realistic for those of you who
do have enough money to contemplate this upgrade.

I know aircraft injectors can be easily cleaned by soaking in Hoppes #9
overnight and if stubborn using it in an ultrasonic bath. Is it safe to
do this on a Bosch injector? I'm having hot start problems due to fuel
line pressure bleeding off through injectors, until pump restores the
pressure. I hate to replace 60,000 mile injetors a $30 each.

I don't have the answer on the mechanics of the job, except that it is
generally a big job on most cars including the watercooled VW's I've
worked on. While VW had some problems with heater cores around 1988-90,
I hadn't heard of new problems. A five year old car shouldn't need a
heater core unless the antifreeze hasn't been changed on schedule. The
main symptom of a problem is a sweet smell and film on the inside of the
windshield that that requires frequent cleaning, like fogged up even
when it is not cold in the morning.

Hi Ian,
Are you sure the Schricks are regrinds? It can't be right since the TT
sells the 260 regrind cam for much less than Schrick...Just wondering as
I am planning to install the 268 cam..

I just got off the phone with Randy from Eurosport about the Kent cams. Here's
what I found out:
* Considered a 264 degree cam (Right between 260s and 268's)
* They are Re-Grinds
* They are only $399.95 with Core (they want your old cams)
* Core charge is $300 up front, totalling $699.95.
* Once they get your stock cams, they will credit your credit-card $300 back.
* Work best with a custom AMS chip they sell for $150
* Dyno tested on a '95 GTI with only chip and K&N at 199hp, 194ft/lbs at the
crank.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Once I get some money I plan on getting
these installed... $400-550 is much better than the $680-750 for the
Schricks... which are re-grinds anyway.

Sounds like Fuel Pressure. Check the GTI-VR6 archives on the TSB on
earlier models regarding Fuel Pump checkvalve problems. There is a "fix" for
that problem involving a long hose and an external checkvalve. This
temporarily helped a (hot) hard-start I had but eventually I had to replace
the ($$$) fuel pump. If you end up needing a pump, I recommend talking to
Dustin at Ron's Parts
