My son and I just replaced both strut bearings on a 89 Golf(hardly a VR 6!) but I thought I would observe that when the strut rod wouldn't stay up by itself for re-assembly(because the shock was pooched) we knew it was time for a new set.  Take yours out and see what's going on.  It should move slowly, smoothly with mild resistance without the spring. Yours I would suspect will have a few "divots" along the way.

The front stock set for the Fox was only $30 each...clearly not Bilsteins..

brand new car. And if you want the OEM Bilstein shocks
that were on there (that are different suspension from
all the other models) from the factory they will be no
more than $400 for all parts and labor (if you find a
