Throttle body and PCV valve questions   Message List

I have two related questions, both pertaining to my 1997 GTI VR6,
which has 155k miles.

First, the back story:

Last weekend, I had trouble getting my VR6 started for the first
time. The engine would start, but would stall as soon as I released
the key. If I pressed on the accelerator, just slightly, it would
stay running, but wouldn't idle on it's own. I have an OBD II
scanner, which showed a P1580 - Thottle body malfunction. I used
some CRC thottle body cleaner (red aerosol can) to clean out the
throttle body. Afterwards, it started up and idled just fine. In
fact, it idled smoother than before.

When I was reattaching the intake hoses, I managed to brake the PCV
valve where the upstream hose (coming from the engine) attaches to
it. I tried epoxying it together but I was in a rush, and the epoxy
didn't hold. Also, I PCV valve is no longer functioning - I can blow
air though it in both directions.

I was at my parents house when the happened. When I drove home that
night, I noticed that at idle, my engine speed would oscillate
between 1500 - 2500 RPM. Occasionally it would idle normal (~850
RPM), but most of the time it would do this strange oscillating
thing. Also, when I took my foot of the gas to slow down, the car
wouldn't really slow down, as if the throttle was stuck.

Which brings me to question 1:

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Do I need to take the
throttle body completely off and give it a better cleaning? I
haven't had a change to hook up my OBD II scanner since I drove it
home, so I don't know if there are new/different error codes yet.

And now question 2:

I called the local dealer, and they wanted $194(!!!) for a new PCV
valve. Anyone know how/where I can get one cheaper? None of the
online places seem to carry that part.

Thanks for reading through this long message. Sorry for the length,
but I wanted to provide as much info as possible for diagnostic
reasons.

Prentice

So, you have a non-functional PCV valve, and it's held together with epoxy, but not well. I'd say it's leaking and letting more air into the motor than the...
