Did you ever track down a CB160 fender? If not I should have one around here... someplace.

Does anyone have a decent used CB160 front fender they would be willing to part with? I mainly need the brackets, so if the blade is damaged it's OK. Thanks,   Randall

Hi all,

Please join me in welcoming Jeff to VJLAMC! His email address is moparrulz2000
<shffrjeff@...>.

Here is Jeff's intro:

"currently own a '74 TY175 '82 XL500R and a '79 KLX250 and am in the
Orange County area. would love to see vintage dual sport rides
Jeff"

PS -- You just missed a terrific vintage dual sport ride put on by VJLA's own
Mike Berg, up in the Frazier Park area. We will have more next year. Our next
ride is the annual Christmas lights cruise in December. Also, it's not too
early to plan on going to our annual Death Valley ride next April.

Cheers,

Brendan

I'm back from a 5 hour run around Oklahoma City. The salvage yard as Allen explained was a shocking surprize....very very thick and tall weed/sticker bushes had grown up in the last 6 months since I was there last. The man in charge "Mouse" was friendly as always and warned me of the jungle out back, still, I pressed on. This time he encouraged me to also check out the inside stockade of goodies. I got into the outside section and was immediately greeted with a large spider web amongst the growth, and a huge, larger than I have ever seen in the desert spider to round out the package...real ugly ominus looking creature. Anyway, I remembered that the older Honda's were toward the back of the yard so on I pressed. I was filty and clobbered with stickers and dried weeds and branches by the time I got to the back of the yard, but I had managed to stomp down a small path. Two Superhawks and one 305 scrambler came into view (visability about 6-8 feet max. All three had cut front fenders :( I found nothing that I did not already have. I was on the lookout for Trail 55 parts, Hodaka Ace 100 part, Honda Trail 90 parts, and XL80 fuel tank,  a one year only 1978 CT90- carb, etc....no luck on any of the items on my list. I did find a heap of tires and there must have been a dozen 250, 275, and 300X19" Pirelli tires, Brand new with the dealer wrapper around them, but looked as though they were out there outside for a decade or two. Perhaps they were rejects, or didn't sell, or who knows. There were at least ten each early to mid 70s Honda CB750 motors, all the 2 to 3 series, only one I could physically not quite get to to see if it was the sandcast. As I worked my way around through the jungle of weeds, now looking like a battered creature from the black lagoon, I noted a huge variety of japanese bikes of many types, just nothing on my list, darn it!

I finally emerged into a slight clearing that led to the under the patio section, then into the inside section, I brushed myself off, cleaned my eye glasses, and found tons of old Yamaha enduros, a not so bad Big Bear Scrambler, Suzuki singles and twins, what looked like the Eddie Lawson Green early Kawasaki early sport bike, three CB750 tanks, one wrinkle type, all dented pretty badly, racks and rows of cables, carbs, side covers, pipes, sprockets, fenders, on and on and on....still nothing on the list! I went to "Mouse" and asked if he knew of any Trail 55 parts, he said about five years ago, those older bikes and parts just weren't selling so they literally hauled truckloads off to the dump and dumped trashcans full of sprockets, etc...into the dumpster! Yikes...five years too late.

There was a very old Yamaha sign there that would not fit into the car, I suspect that this salvage/bike shop has been in the Yamaha business for many many years.

I took one more slow trip through the inside section to see if I had missed anything, still, nothing. Me and my bag of tools made our way back to the rental car and headed for the 47 year old Honda shop to see if they had a few hard to find parts. Not a chance so off I went to another dealer that I was only going to visit for some tires. Once I was there, in the showroom,I spotted a 1975 Suzuki RM125, first year Honda C77 Dream 305 wet sump domestic, 30s era Indian, 40s era Harley, a first year Honda Z50 that was purchased brand new from the 47 year old shop I just came from, etc...Of course I wanted to know who the old Honda person was, it was the owner, who was not there at the time. One of the employees told me of a vintage bike "museum" upstairs. He said when he's not helping customers in the future, he would tour me through the upstairs...I then found out that the owner is going to start a car and bike museum on old route 66 near Oklahoma City so I gatherd the contact information for a future visit to that future museum.

So, all I can say is that it's always worth a try to find those old bike parts. Never give up. Nothing this time, but never give up.

Better luck in the future,
Desert Todd

I just got a call from Todd.

Some of the weeds in the outdoor
areas are over his head and some
of them are only chest high (thus
hard to find the bikes), it's
cloudy, and drizzly this AM.

After the outside area, he's
moving inside to look things over.

He'll probably have more to share.

Not anymore, I've spent 10+ years digging out most of the good stuff, then other folk found out about them and finished the job. They still have a good stock of early Yamaha and Suzuki two stroke twins, some Kawasaki 250 to 400 triples, but only common Honda's now. I stopped by there in February and really struggled to find anything worth dragging home, a '71 CB750 chassis and some misc parts is all. Back in the good old days I would pull out a two axle car trailer behind my big Dodge van and fill the van with parts and put 10 or 12 mostly complete bikes on the trailer. I have some pictures I took while getting gas in Flagstaff on the way home from an epic parts scrounge, on the trailer was a CB750 Sandcast, 2 early Kawasaki W1's, a blue '61 CB77, a white CA72, and a couple CL72/77's. The inside of the van was full of dusty boxes of nos Honda bits, nos exhaust pipes, tanks, gages, early manuals, and QA & Z50 parts. Even found a Ducati 450 Desmo enduro leaning against the side of a house near Wynona for (I think) $100. There are several good automotive wrecking yards along the 40 through Arizona where Nate and I found some great stuff as well. Good hunting!

Is the Albuquerque salvage you are fond of worth visiting for 60s and 70s HONDA stuff, like for C92, CB92, C72, CA72, CB72, and CL72 stuff?

I would be MUCH more enthusiastic about returning to DV on a tiddler again if there was a room available and not trying to set up a tent in the dark. So far I've done the DV trek on a Yamaha AT-1, Honda SL100, Honda SL175, CA77 Dream, CB450, CX500, XL600, several CB750's, full dress GL1000, drove the chase truck (van) a couple times, and once did a day trip to Randsburg in my 1992 Caprice ex-cop car, and found out while "racing" Nate Jr on his CBR (I think) on a lonely stretch of desert road that my car will indeed do 110mph. On my bucket list is to run through DV with a sidecar rig, and in an old Mopar convertable. So.... yup, let's go!

I think that would be great but what would the rout be that we take to get there, I'm in for the room!

Only about 1/2 the Hotel is in operation right now , Some rooms are singles and others are multiple , when I was there , one family got rollaway beds in thier room for the kiddies , I'd guess four or five people were in one room .

I had a single and one person slept on the floor .

No TV's , no radios , no telephones .

I expect to share my room, but what we need is for a few folks to step up and reserve more rooms so we have a block of three or four. We usually have a dozen or so riders. At $65 or so a night it's a bargain.

PS -- Here's a video about the Opera House, http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=X7PBObz9K9M

The Longstreet Casino several miles to the north in Nevada is another local attraction, or perhaps an idea for Sunday breakfast if we don't ride all the way to Beatty.

Hi all,

April 10-11, 2010, will be VJLA's 16th(?) annual Death Valley ride! Mark your
calendars, book your rooms, and start work on your bikes.

Due to popular demand, we will change our routine a bit and spend Saturday night
at the legendary Amargosa Motel. Amargosa is located on Highway 190 about 30
miles East of Furnace Creek (and about 230 miles from Lancaster). Our route
will be the usual, starting at Crazy Otto's in Lancaster, and then continuing
past Mojave, Randsburg, Trona, Stovepipe Wells and Furnace Creek.

If we are ambitious Sunday, we could ride from Amargosa up to Beatty, NV, the
back way. This would add about 20 miles to Sunday's total itinerary.

Book your room now! Although we can and should share rooms, this is a very
small motel. I just booked mine. The web site is at
http://www.amargosa-opera-house.com/.

Next to the motel is the Amargosa Opera House. I definitely plan on catching
Marta Becket's performance Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. It costs only $15 and is
truly one of California's most famous obscure attractions. In addition to the
dance, the opera house itself is amazing. Marta painted murals on all the walls
that look like a huge audience.

As always, all bikes are welcome. There looks to be a tiddler contingent this
year though. If Team tiddler rides I'll join on my CT90. After all, misery
loves company.

We should all chip in $20 or so to help with buy gas for the chase truck. Any
volunteers to drive chase?

Here's to another epic Death Valley ride!

Cheers,

Brendan

I haven't heard from Attila in a year or two.  Last time I talked to him he was doing fine, although he had gone back to work because the stock market crash hit his retirement savings.  :-(

The same as we always take , just keep right on going past Furnace Creek
campgrounds , Hotel and resort , follow up the hill to the 'T' intersection and
turn right , 1/8 miles and you're _THERE_ ! can't miss
it .

Getting there is 3/4 the fun ! .

I'm not sure if Jason remembered the time he rode a Honda 100C.C. single and it
blew up on the way home , he pinned the throttle and rode it 'till it died in a
blaze of glory , twisted , burned metal and spewing hot oil....

Bill, the traditional route is meeting for breakfast in Lancaster, then backroads thru Rosamond, Mojave, Randsburg, then my fav, the spooky Trona-zone. Next is Wildrose canyon and drop into Death Valley and down to Stovepipe Wells. I suppose from there we would continue on hwy 190 all the way to Death Valley Junction and the Opera House. About 230 miles.
