Charlie, Use metal etching primer on the bare aluminum. Automotive paint is best. You will also want to use the appropriate primer between the metal etching...

Used to use a product called zinc chromate but I think it may be outlawed. Paint won't stick to alum. There must be a replacement for the old zinc chromate....
