Never installed one but according to the instructions you will be putting the shield mounting bracket in between the TBS headlight bracket and the headlight....

Are you sure it's "smoke" as in oil, or over richness? I think you'll find it's just condensation such as you'll see coming from a cars tailpipe in the morning...
