Mine too is always dirty. I wondered the same thing not long ago and
posted here but got not much of a response. One person said their
window stays clear w/o one. Let me know if you hear otherwise :-). I
wonder how tricky the installation is. It seems getting the adhesive
to the right temperature so it bonds well.
