My 1986 Toyota Camry Diesel only has 86,000 original miles on it,
Looks like new and was running great. A few days ago it just quit
running. Symptoms were like it was running out of fuel. When it
would stop it would restart easily if I pumped the fuel priming pump
on top of the fuel filter. Thinking that perhaps the fuel filter was
clogged with debris or contaminated with water, I replaced the fuel
filter. But symptoms returned exactly the same as before. A mechanic
told me it sounds like the FUEL PUMP needs to be replaced. I talked
to a Toyota dealer and was told that this model does NOT have an
electric fuel pump. It only has a mechanical Injection pump and the
part is not being manufactured anymore. They quoted me a price of $
4000 to obtain a replacement. Sounds like bogus info to me. Any
suggestions?
