I have been reading this board since 2001. The primary cause of an
engine starting problem was due to a dead auxiliary battery. People
either left a door open or dome light on or headlight switch to the
on position (lights go out but relay used up battery power). That
small battery was upgraded in 2002. We all know the problems that can
arise in our classic Prius, power steering sensor, gas pedal sensor,
tires can wear quickly (although mine have 35+K on them), and goofy
gas gauge which caused a lot of people to run out of gas. The
auxiliary battery and tires were improved by 2002. The power
steering warranty has been extended free of charge. Computer
upgrades were installed as needed, I'm guessing reported under
the "check engine light" category. There may have been a few major
problems for a handful of people but that's the case for all cars.
For as new as this technology is I think Toyota has done an excellent
job. I would not hesitate to buy another hybrid car.
