Opposite bearing surfaces will initially only contact heavily at
particular "high" spots with a limited total bearing area. With
minimal wear, these high spots grind in to yield a more even and
total area contact. The points of the initial contacts will generally
move around within the bearing surface with different loadings and
speeds, hence the admonition against constant loading and speeds
during the break-in period.
