Well I had to do it! I actually drove my Prius out of gas on the freeway.
I dont remember when the last bar started blinking, probably 40 miles or
so before running dry but when the engine quit, there was a slight "bump"
feeling, the darkened info screen came to life as well as the triangle
and check engine lights. I switched to engine display mode and continued
driving at 65 mph on electric power alone. I was going up a slight grade
and since I was further from the gas station than I wanted to be, I
slowed to 30 and maintained speed for 6 miles. The battery icon dropped
from 75% down to 25% as I pulled into the station. Total mpg at this time
was 51.5, not bad for 99% freeway driving. It was a really weird
experience driving into the gas station and the people near me looking at
and not hearing an engine running. I told them I ran out of gas 6 miles
ago and drove in on battery power. With big grins, they wished they could
do this.
