Thanks for advice John, I have the week off work,
this week ,so will be looking at runner and possible
tuning ideas. By the way, a mate of mine has just bought
a brand new gilera runner SP180 same colour as mine
from Fowlers in Cardiff that has just gone into
receivership Guess what £1350 !! sold with no warranty, but
what a bargain.
regards Alun.

Hello Alun,

Nice to hear from you again, I
think you are right about the carb/air filter/reed
block, I don't know about the price's it's been a while
since I brought anything, I think a carb, manifold, &
cone filter are done as a kit now at around £140 ?
While a reed block is a massive £35 which I think is a
bit steep, you could try different Reeds in your
present block. When I changed the whole block I could not
tell the differance from when I changed just the
reeds....

A final note... although I had trouble with my
Billethead I do believe that there is reilable power to be
had by increasing the C.R., having spoken to Terry at
Taffspeed he would recommend putting a Malossi 172 head on
the 180, and then if you wished to go further still
you could have it skimed by 0.5 mm to increase the CR
to 13:1/@... squish. At this it would still be
reliable for road use. I now know that my Billethead was
running at around 14:1/@... squish hence part of my
problem.

I hope this helps....

Regards John B.

Any advice on tuning standard 180 Runner PM
tuning Mkii exhaust, without dismembering 180 barrel
piston setup. New Carb / carbon reed block Air filter
seems my only options. Not keen on gear kit just would
like a bit more acceleration top speed also if both
are possible. Ideas prices anyone.
Thanks Alun

Hi, The stock carb has this bolt which as far as
I can tell, is some sort of heater to warm the carb
up. Now I'm trying to place the larger carb on my 172
dragster and I can't figure out where heater bolt is
supposed to go. Also, what is up with having to get a
larger fuel line?
Robert

Going with a 105 with

I agree with John, presuming your using the stock
125 / 180 Variator then you will definatly have to
drop the weight, lighter roillers = faster
acceleration, heavier ones = less acceleration.

Put the
std ones back in and work downwards if needed.

Hello Nyle,

I think you could be going the
wrong way with the weight of the rollers, eg try 12
gram ones.

I've settled on 12 grams for some
time now, this will bring up the engine/front pulley
revs before the clutch shoes move out.

What's

OK guys here's the deal. I just put GREEN clutch
springs in my clutch. Now it seems very slow off the
start. Any suggestions? I even changed the rollers from
13.5 to stock14 to 15 grams to. My motor is built with
pipe, carb, 172 kit, etc..
I am off to the races
this weekend and want to smoke those 4 speed

Hello!
I´m using a Malossi filter for the
moment but last year I rode with a RamAir. I don´t think
it does matter much wich filter you use as someone
said earlier. Choose the one you think look best on
your scoot. But remember that your engine will be
running leaner than with your std. airbox, so look over
your carb. jettting.

Mattias (172 Dragster).

the idea being that as we are all (well, a few of
us !) using the same 172cc 2 stroke kit on our
scooters and even the same engine more or less between the
Runner, Dragster and Sr, that we could help each other
out with set ups, tuning tips etc.

So guys,
give me an idea on which air filter to use. Pieman,
what do you use, Ex-billethead, how about you? Nyle?

Hang on a minute. Who said anything about blowing
off strokers? I couldn't care less if I still won't
go as fast as a tuned Runner, etc!! What I want is
more oomph coupled with reasonable reliability to make
my daily commute less fraught. If I happen to get a
bigger smile along the way then that's a
bonus!!

Yes, I did ask to be shot down. What I wanted was
someone to explain the potential downsides to tuning, not
just some small-minded "stroker" abuse. I'd like to be
in a position to make an informed decision about
tuning, because everyone I've spoken to so far has been a
salesman. How hard can that be?

Fast Reg

P.S.
On second thoughts, I shouldn't bother.

You didnt look very Hard then ?

The
"Welcome" message on the left of the home page says why I
set the club up Reg, its for 172 malossi Kitted
scooter owners, the idea being that as we are all (well,
a few of us !) using the same 172cc 2 stroke kit on
our scooters and even the same engine more or less
between the Runner, Dragster and Sr, that we could help
each other out with set ups, tuning tips
etc.

Now while Frank is interseted in how you get on with
the 4 stroke, I know that you will never get the same
performance out of a small capacity (sub 250cc) Four stroke
motor that you will out of a 2 stroke, so i personally
dont have any real interest in tuning them nor do i
think there is any real point in doing it.

I
presume your £2500 is to trade to a new one ? I would
look around for a 2nd hand 250 one, should work out
about the same then. The one thing you got to look at
is your going to be putting extra stress on parts
made for a 125 engine, and therefore they will, at
some point, break !

Take it from me lol

Hi Fast Reg,

You'er welcome here mate, my
answer was based on the way you asked your question
!

You asked to be shot, so I did so!

I've have
tuned more 4 stroke engines that 2 strokes, but non as
small as these.

With this amount of cc's the 2
stroke is easier to get more power out of, and the way
the 2 stroke makes its power gives you a real kick up
the butt.

With the 4 stroke my suggestion
would be up the cc's and then make it breath better,
cam, carb, airfilter, exhaust, gasflow the ports, and
polish the backs of the valves.

But I don't know
if all of these parts are avaiable....

I
watch with interest your
progress.

Ex-Billethead.

Thanks, Pieman!!!

I don't want to seem
like I'm throwing my toys out of my pram, but I don't
see any mention that you have to have a 2 stroke to
be part of this club, or even have a
Runner/Dragster, etc. Surely if I want to tune a 4 stroke "bus"
then that's my business, but I thought I'd get a
little more help than this!!

The costs? A grand
to tune, two and a half to trade up!! Go
figure!!!!

No more sniping answers, please. I'm

A good roller weight is the one that gives you
the best top speed with crisp throttle responce.

A bit of playing is usually needed to find your
individual ideal roller weight, everyone could be using a
different weight, all depends on set up.

A am on
about 10.5 grm with the 125 gilera variator, and about
13.8 gm with the Polini variator.

I dont know how well it will work with the
standard exhaust, personally I would not bother (with a
std exhaust) as it may not give you much in the way
of power or speed for the increase in wear due to
the higher RPM.

Your half way (£100 for CDI?)
to a stoffi or PM MK2 pipe, thats would be my next
