Mmm, quite true. I just didn't think that all the way through. Apologies
for that.

I've had some sticky 4WD shifter issues with my Brat. What will work for me in
your situation is to use a jack to lift one rear tire, using the parking brake
to hold the front steady. Then rock the rear wheel a little bit to unload any
binding in the drive-train. That usually will un-stick the 4WD shifter for me.
If that works I would recommend completely draining the oil from the
transmission and put in something with a bit of anti-friction help such as:

one thnig I have done before is go under the center consel and remove the sensor
so the light turns off, then remove the drive shaft to the back tires  so they
don't spin.......

I am out here in California and its SUPER strict here for smog.... I didnt even
have to remove my drive shaft because I had to do a two speed idle test (meaning
no dyno drive test). all I did was remove the sensor under the center consel by
turning it to the left and disloging it so the sensor turned off.... No light
meant no 4WD to the smog techs and they went for it. The beauty of the situation
is nothing gets broken and you can easily put the drive shaft and sensor back
when the smog is done.

I just went and fixed my 4WD later when I had the money.....

does that help?

A very rough work around solution that I'd do would be to pull the rear
CV joints out and get it road registered/smog tested whilst it is in
front wheel drive only. Or pull the front CV's out and have it 'smogged'
whilst being in rear wheel drive.

Knock out the single pin on each end of both CV's (with a thin bit of
rod or a thin bolt, and hit with big hammer), compress the ends of the
CV's in towards each other, and with some WD40 and a big hammer, they
should slip right out. It is always easier said than done though.

Respectfully, I think you forgot the part where a pair of half-shafts get
sacrificed for a RWD conversion. Each front hub is held together using the outer
stub of a half-shaft & axle nut. A chop-saw helps with this conversion as it's
not easy to get the outer CV apart. I'm currently driving a '77 RWD Brat, but
not for much longer as winter fast approaches!
