According to the Factory service manual they need to be pressed in. No way I
used the outer race from an old bearing that I split with a grinder/cutting
blade and the pressed together a little to facilitate reomval of the tool once
the bearing was installed. Worked great took ten minutes. The seals went in easy
with a small punch, of cource tapping a little from each side.
Removing the old ones is easy if you follow the FSM. a. Push the spacer to the
side. b. tap the inner race of the outer bearing a little from each side. c tap
the outer race of the inner bearing the same way. HINT: Soak the steering knucke
in a parts dip and or gasoline for awhile. This whille loosen the rubber around
the grease seals and make this process REALLY EASY.
I know this info is REALLT late but I put this here for future refernece. I just
replace the passenger side axle shaft, wheel bearings, ball joint, tie rod end,
leadding rod/torsion bar bushing, and traverse bar bushing.
Traverse bar bushing HINT: dilled the rubber then burned it out with a torch,
and cut the outer steel of the bushing with a hack saw by threading the blade
throught the housing before connecting it to the hack saw frame. It came right
out then. I had to use a press to get it back in. See picture of press in the
Ed's 86 picture album.
