At first we had thought about doing that, but the plastic slider piece in the
shifter area is cracked and a large piece is broken out of. Not sure how that
happened when we had it stored, but nonetheless it is broken. We thought we'd
just replace the entire thing if it were easy enough because we do have one from
our parts car.

It's really pretty easy. There's a phillips screw in the shift knob, remove the screw, and pull up on the knob to remove it. The console top is easy as well....
