The purpose of the cotter pin is to keep the castle nut from spinning loose.
You may have to spacer with washers to get the parts to meet properly. My
sidecar wheel has a spacer on the inboard end of the axle to center it in the
fender properly. There's just a single washer under the castle nut on the
outboard end and the nut engages the cotter pin.

Ok so I got my sidecar today and got it on the bike just need to set
things up.
Question the nut that holds the wheel onto the sidecar (not the spare) is there
not supposed to be a washer between the two? Also is the cotter pin not supposed
to go through the gaps on the nut? I have been looking at pics and the best I
found was this one

Now this is how mine will look if I put the pin in it as I did not get a washer.
It seems to me that there should be a washer to bring the nut further out to
allow the pin to go through the gap... or am I thinking to much?
Cheers
