If you have a side valve (SV) engine, either 6 or 12 volts, and
driving it all day, which you'll be doing to get essentially from
Calgary to El Paso, TX in a week, even 80 kph is too much, especially
if you've re-done the engine. SV'ers seem like 60-70 kph as a steady
diet and not too steady, like getting on the slab all day from
Cochrane to the border and on to Great Falls. If you go south on the
22 and cross to Browning, MT and on down that way where you've got a
lot of variation so the engine is not only running at the same speed,
both you and the bike will be a LOT happier. Granted it'll probably
take you 2 weeks to make the trip down, but you might have a fighting
chance of making it. All the best in any case.
Cheers,
philm

on the 30th of May, and I am anticipating arriving in El Paso, Tx
about the middle of June, returning to Cochrame via Coram, MT on or
about July 6. My route will take me east of Calgary about 200 miles,
then straight south to EL Paso. I consider a side trip to Fort
Collins but I am trying to avoid mountains.

and I have good tires all around. I am concerned with the tires, as
the drive wheel seems to go through tires very quickly. The rebuilt
motor is using minimum amts of oil, but I have a spare motor sitting
in my Garage. I am contemplating shipping it to a point somewhere in
the middle of my route, then forwarding it to wherever I might need
it or back home if I dont. The valves in the spare have been reseated
but we didnt change the bearings.

I seem to be topped out at 80kph, at leastI wouldn't like to run it
any harder. I can occassionally get 90 but only with a tail wind .
