Your first mistake is thinking that you are going to adjust it and it is going
to work instantly. Mine changed a huge amount while it was wearing in.
I think it was Min who advised me to just keep the wrench and a screwdriver
handy in the sidecar for a while and every time you miss a shift adjust it just
a tad.
Remember all four gears are poorly cut by modern standards and wear themselves
in. The foot shifter is one of the world's first attempts at that device frozen
in time.
It does not actually shift each gear to one of four proper positions that lock
in. It just pushes or pulls a measured amount regulated by the screws. It's
always going to be a compromise of trying to get it where it can catch all
gears, and even then folks tell me the average CJ will pop out now and then.
There is hope as mine was a real popper and it has gotten quieter and only
popped out a couple times in the last six months.

I don't know if you got the follow up message, but I adjusted it just
like the toolbox link specified but still no dice. First to second is
smooth, third to fourth is smooth, but second to third is garbage. It
locks into third gear and then pops back out which you can see on the
handshifter. It takes about five tries to try to get it back into
third or I have to use the handshifter to bypass third and go from
second to fourth. I don't know if I need to adjust more or what, i'm
stumped, any ideas anybody. has this happened to anybody else out
there?
