Hi folks. We (the syncro westy and I) have survived. I'm currently wrestling with whether to stick with my plan to make the Vanagon be the next step in my plan for an all-diesel household, or to just surrender to the Bostig goodness and engineering rigor and stay with gasoline.
I have the same setup in my 2wd westy keep a eye out on the timeing belt they are starting to get oldmine just went but no bent valves.

You asking me? I just purchased a 1987 Syncro GL 7-passenger model with TiiCo engine. Since purchasing it, I have rebuilt or replaced an awful lot of parts, including installation of the entire accessory mount system from an A2 Jetta. The only non-engine mod so far is complete removal of the crappy factory air conditioning, which I intend to replace with an in-dash unit. I am in California right now, preparing the Syncro for a cross-country drive to my home in Salem, NH.

Crappy factory AC? Huh?
Unless you have a Westy (which isn't what you indicated), the stock AC on a late model vanagon (like yours should be) is excellent, when functioning properly.
My 86's AC was often too cold in the 90/90 weather of DC (90 degrees with 90% humidity) at full blast, but that's why there is a thermostat, to control the cooling capability.
My dislike for the factory setup is based mostly on the aging and brittle plastic parts. I'm sure that a system in good condition could be made to work well. Mine was literally falling apart, just like the last two vans that I had with the same system. I think that the intense heat here in the southwest may contribute to the demise of the plastic parts. I would rather have an in-dash system, so that's the direction I'm headed.

There are so many typos in the web page for the quarry..I would have reservations about going there without someone else checking things out.
1) It isn't "Connlesville" , it is Connellsville. 2) It isn't "Yaughagenhy" , it is the "Youghiogheny"

Your second link...has been done already (well mostly).
2nd year of SdME, Derek, Brady, another person and I took the Dictum Ridge. Easy going until very near the exit...the last 60 feet or so took 4+ hours. Very scary, and far more technical than even Brady wanted to do again ;) (at least that year).
The 3rd year of SdME, we took the whole crew along the top of Dictum Ridge, but stopped before the end....We ended up turning around and going back. Still we had one person dent a tire to point of loosing air (Derek hammered it back out for him.) and later whack is van a good one against a projecting log.
Only I have traveled Second Mountain trail. It's nothing special (a few mud holes, but nothing else more problematic than the top of Dictum Ridge.)

One thing would make it a point that 2wd or welcome like last year they can hitch a ride with a syncro I did this myself at SDW. How many people are on the SDE list any way.

Hello,
Thought I would chime in, just to show I was watching the conversation.
I would not mind someplace new. I have been to most every SDME (all of the ones in PA over the last few years). having recently moved it will be far for me no matter where it is. I do like PA, it's cozy. Paragon was better than Rausch Creek and with the death of Paragon the four wheeling is getting a little stale at the remaining location.
Turnout is weak (period). We need to improve the turn out. I think this should be the main goal of this year's SDME. Whatever improves turnout is what we should do.
There is no way we will ever compare to the west coast. Four wheeling is such a lifestyle out there, there are so many great places to do it, and the syncro people out there are more willing to travel. I wont even mention the r word.
I make a concerted effort to go to this every
year, as one of the things that is important to me, like a holiday or something ( you know x-mas, Kwanzaa, Hannukah... SDME). Alot of people crap out every year for whatever reason.

New Location??
The location in Pennsylvania was reachable by some of us with Syncros in the North East. Moving to NC makes it that much harder to travel for some in the North East trying to get there. Hopefully not limping home with a broken van.
I am working on my 87 Syncro with this as a possible 4wd outing.
