I have noticed the hesitation on braking in the wet on my 2004 as well but did
not know this was a common problem. My left rear pad also wore down to where the
squealer cut into the rotor way before the pad was worn out. I replaced the pads
with Porterfield carbon/Kevlar pads for about half the price of the brembo's
from Subaru. Now that I think of it, I do not remember that it has hesitated in
braking in the wet. Maybe I have not paid enough attention. Got some rain headed
in this weekend I believe. Will drive it and verify my results.

Did you have the brake fluid flushed at 30-35k miles as they recommend? I need
to have mine done for the second time now. You may need to have them blead.

Like many others, I have noticed issues with the brakes on my 2006 STI
   in the wet.

The first Winter, I noticed a several second delay between brake
application and any stopping power in cold rain, if you did not touch
the brakes for 10 min. or so.

Last Winter, that issue changed to include a strong pull to the left
when the brakes finally did come on and a similar feeling, sometimes
right after you started driving, if it was wet, even if you parked
inside. I also noticed in the dry, the braking power seems reduced,
or at least the initial bite of the brakes is reduced and I may be
detecting a little bit of fade. Once last Winter, the brakes stuck so
hard after being parked inside wet, I had to rev it a bit and dump the
clutch in the reverse to get it moving. I also noticed that warm rain
   now causes the problem too.

When I took the snows off, I noticed that the left rear pads were worn
more than the right rear (still plenty of pad on all 4 corners though,
at 22k) and the clip on top of the caliper that holds the pads was
crooked and not secure properly with the 2 clips that you slide to one
side. At that point, I showed it to the dealer. They found nothing,
but the clip is now straight. (although several weeks later, when I
first looked at it, I noticed that one of the sliding clips that hold
the clip on is not in the right position) The issue still remains.
With one or two exceptions, nobody has said anything about a pull.

Any ideas about what I should do next?

I had popping in the rear also on my 2004. After countless hours
searching newsgroups the consensus is it is common for the rear
struts of that year to do this. Before you have them replaced do
what I did. Jack up the rear of the car and remove the wheel - let
the strut completely extend and liberally apply waterproof grease o
the strut shaft. Do both sides - my popping is gone. Have read this
works for most people as the struts lose their grease and start to
bind/pop.

$10 and some time might do the trick...

I had a noise problem with my '05 and though it was a little different - it
sounded like rocks rolling in a metal pan - it took three different places to
figure it out. It turned out to be gravel that had gotten into the rocker
panels. Everyone was telling me that it wasn't anything to be concerned about
but they couldn't tell me what it was....

I'm contemplating having a good body shop cut out small sections of the rocker
panels so that anything that gets in there gets out of there.

Let us know if the mystery ever gets solved.

Hi there,

I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.

This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can
see here:

Where you can read the rest of this message as web page.

Also you can read my new campaign 'Urgent, we need smile' here:

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I
invite you as fellow humans and members of the world community to support my
campaign by reading my article on my site and see the human-buttons. The
campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.org especially
after the last scandals in the UN and UNHCR, just for example:

The refugees allege that UNHCR staff is selling most of the food items they are
supposed to be supplied.
"They aren't supplying sufficient food to us because they sell most of the food
items," they allege: http://allafrica.com/stories/200503140214.html
Here is another example: Burmese Refugees Withdraw Protest Against UNHCR

Light throttle...yeaaa right...you will have at least 3500 rpm if
steady, but I belive you at that time let the trottle go and you more
likely had 4-5000 rpm.. if you check the TC meter you will see that
the TC is feeding air into the turbo (over pressure 10-12 PSI) at
that sound is normal....i like it and it can be heard as well outside
and what a sound...
If cruising in 6 gear (85 mile), try to gear down to 4 and press the
pedal to the metallllll you will hear the nice sound again...

From mile #1, I have had this noise that suddenly appears at 90MPH
under light throttle. It more or less doens't exist unless you are
cruising at that speed with a steady throttle. If you take your foot
off the gas at 95MPH and let it coast down, there is no noise. It also
doesn't happen if you accelerate through 90MPH on the way to something
higher. The noise seems to be coming from the rear. It happens with
the stock tires and with my Dunlop 3D snows too. (although I think it
may be louder with the snows) The problem with getting the dealer to
look at these things is that they don't want to drive the car that fast
or be a passenger at that speed. It is hard to believe that this noise
could be normal. It cuts right through the stereo when it is up
somewhat loud.

Ever since I picked up the STI 4,000 miles ago, I noticed a humming
sound from the tires that is loudest at exactly 80MPH. At 90, a 2nd
different and quiter humming sound starts up. I took the Service
Manager on a test ride and showed him both sounds and he thought they
were normal. The 80MPH sound changes when the wheel is turned
slightly either way. Then, I put the snow tires (Dunlop Wintersport
3D) and snow wipers on. The 80 MPH sound is now gone. The 90 MPH
sound remains, but seems to be coming from the rear now. At
somewhere between 90 MPH and 120 MPH, a new, much louder sound has
appeared. It doesn't happen all the time, so road surface may have
something to do with it, but it has happened on two highways. It is
very loud. The only time it happened at a speed as low as 90, was on
a very windy day. It is a droneing sort of sound. Usually, to make
it happen, you have to go up to 110 or more, but once it starts,
slowing down does not make it go away until you drop to 90. I'm
thinking it is the side glass on the passenger side bowing outward at
speed; made worse by strong crosswinds on that one day where it
started at 90). There isn't really a wind leaking sound though. I
don't think that window/door fits right. (the door feels like it
hangs up and drops 1/4 inch as you open it. The lock looks aligned
and the door and glass look aligned though. The Subaru mechanic said
it was the trailing edge of the glass sticking to the rubber and he
lubricated the rubber. (this new loud sound only started after he did
that, but I'm not sure if it started before or after the snows went
on since I may not have gone 110 between the lubrication and when the
snow tires and wipers went on) One of the reasons I'm thinking
glass/door issue instead of tire is that the noise is very
inconsistant (it changes a lot at a steady speed; maybe with gusts of
wind?) and it doesn't go away or change when you take your foot off
the throttle until the speed falls to 90. The easiest thing to try
next is to put the regular wipers back on, but I doubt that is it.
In the Spring, when the snows come off, it could go away. I could
talk to some tire people to see if inspection of the right front tire
(where the noise seems to be coming from) could reveal a problem. It
looks fine to me. As hard a time as I had to get someone to come on
a test drive with me at 80 MPH, I don't think I will ever get anyone
to go 110. My biggest concern is just the possibility of a tire or
wheel bearing failure at speed, since I don't actually stay at those
speeds for very long. The tire wear looks fine on both sets of
tires, by the way.

I don't think so. this is one of the first electronic throttle control vehicles.
I would have it take to the dealer and possibly replace this part.

When I lift off the thottle and push in the clutch, the revs climb for
a bit before dropping back down. It seems to happen in every gear.
Kind of scary when you shift at 6k as the revs go to 7k by themselves
before you let out the clutch again. The car has done this since day
one and has about 2k on it. This behavior might actually make the car
easier to drive smoothly but is this normal?

Has anyone found one that will bolt on without cutting the bumper

Hi,

I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Jay. I joined this Yahoo
group yesterday.
I am 54 yrs old. I live in Utah. I have been a nut about cars since I was
just a little feller.
I have a blue '04 STi and a red and white '57 Chevy. The Chevy is not a
performance" car
or a muscle car. I've kept it pretty much the way it came off the showroom
floor.

I have not done anything to my STi under the hood. But I have had some
airbush lightning
bolts painted on the sides and the trunk lid. I call it "ghost" lightning
cause it's understated,
only shows up lightly when you get the light on it right. As a result I
call my STi "Blue
Lightning". (The Chevy is "Ol' Texas Red".) I have a few more cosmetic
changes that I
am thinking about. Would be interested to hear what some of you have done
to your STi's.

I mostly enjoy putting my STi and/or my Chevy in local classic car shows.
It raises a few
eyebrows amoung the older guys like me to see a new import in a "classic"
car show.

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon. -jay-

Oh, I left out the best thing about the new STI. It is getting another spoiler
on the roofline. Evidentially the monster on the trunk does not provide enough
downforce as they said it needed more. I had twin spoilers on an XR4Ti and
almost nobody remembers them.

I guess they are confident with having the higher HP than the evo. I don't get
it. All the mags trash the STi and praise the evo. All I have heard about
mitsubishi is that they break. Subaru is reliable and the company is all Green
and heavily into rec sports. Of course you never hear about that.

That's OK If you gave me four evo's I would sell them and buy two subarus.

There is nothing like a 5000rpm clutch dump and hearing your passenger call on
God:-)

the evo is a good car buy i've always loved subaru since it started in
the WRC, looks can be a whole different story, new nosejob yeah right
the new 2006 model looks like a pontiac i don't know what they were
thinking

also for the price for a new subaru wrx is some much more then a new
mustang rouch, base price is 28,000 and some new wrx is like 32,000
and sum

wish i could afford one but i think i will wait till there at a 1995
civic price peace

From the looks of things in Drive magazine by Subaru, you will have to wait
until 2007 for any performance improvement on the STI ( all capital letters now,
sort of stupid, IMHO) All the new STI is getting is a nosejob along with the
rest of the Impreza line.

i heard that their was a evo with 400hp stock and excellent turning
capability, it can take sharp turns over 60 mph without spinning out, no
under/oversteer

Do any of you have a set of STI wheels (preferable gold but silver acceptable)
that you would be willing to sell at a reasonable price? I need a set for my
winter tires.

Thanks for the info all I can get helps, I know I actually felt that
in the tires, I even said to myself the car is not even lower how
come I could feel everything in the ground. I will keep everyone
informed when the time comes that I've decided to lower it a bit.
thanks alot.

I have not investigated it as it is currently perfect for missing

and not push it along. Good luck and let us know what you find out
as there is practically no traffic on this list and some real world
data would be welcome. The factory tires may get on your nerves if
you travel a lot as they get even noisier with wear. Michelin Pilot
AS will take you through the snow but screw the handling a bit and
raise your 0-60 times since they are slightly taller. That's the
only info I can add from my experience.
