Most of the codes and such started about 1981. From then to 1995 or so, you could often trick the ECM into giving you the codes if you knew how... My 86 Olds...

Look at the specs. My bet is that basic ones display and reset codes only. The fancy ones probably display live sensor data and record data sets for analysis....
