Have him go to a Subaru parts department and have them order it for him. I would
replace all the cross member bolts if one broke. Some of the better automotive
parts stores (NAPA comes to mind) might be able to supply a replacement as well.
This is NOT anything that would seem to be difficult to locate. Also, you did
not say the Year/Model Subaru you were having repaired.

My brother (a GM mechanic who is pretty uncomfortable working with our Subaru)
has been helping with a (standard) transmission problem (rebuilding it). He has
run into several small problems with the exhust system... most of them he has
resolved, but he seems to be having troubles finding a replacement cross-member
bolt that broke during this process.
Does anyone have any ideas where we could find one?
