The other discussion was so interesting that I
almost forgot to mention that the new gauges came in
yesterday while I was at work. They look great! If I were
being really critical, I would notice that the needles
are red instead of white, the tach goes from 6:00 to
1:30 instead of 7:30 to 4:30 and of course they ar VDO
instead of Veglia. I can have the needles replaced and
even the face of the tach re-painted if I want to but
it's just not a priority right now. I went with the
VDO gauges instead of the Veglia because all 8 of
them and shipping cost less than $400. The original G4
Veglia Tachometer alone costs about $1500 used plus
shipping from Italy. (I have a source if you're
interested.) That's probably not too bad if you're building a
show car but I'm building a rally car and just don't
see the benefit of having $4000 in gauges in that
situation. I'll post some pics of them
ASAP.

Ciao,

John

5 Bolt 'Coffin Spoke' Wheels...

So Just to
be clear, The supplier that Steve R. listed is a
source for the original 15" wheels for about $700 each.
There is also a source for the original 15" wheels
listed in the links section but they were more expensive
there at $1000 each. Omicron has been working on a 16"
version of the wheel for a while now but as yet I have
not been able to get a price out of them. (They're
nice enough guys, they just never seem to know the
price.) The 5 bolt pattern looks really good but by the
time you get the special hubs & wheels you could
easily spend $4000 extra to have them (not including a
spare).

As for the kits...

The Hawk is the oldest kit
and the only one made by the same manufacturer for
its entire existance. It is the kit that is most like
the original and has an good racing history thanks to
people like John Rutter. There is very little to
give-away a well made Hawk - especially if you get the
aforementioned 5 bolt wheels. Off the top of my head, there are
some small differences in the way the floor-pan looks
and the rear frame is slightly different (see my
previous post).

The Corse looks right from the
exterior (except for the molded in nose vents on some
models) but it is a whole different animal under the
skin. The floorpan and both the front and rear frame
sections look very different from the original. Once
inside or under the bonnett/turtle, a Corse is very
obviously not an original car. On the plus side, they have
been very thoughtfully re-engineered using modern
techniques & technology so the car should in theory be more
rigid and handle better. Gary Lomas has successfully
rallied his (as evidenced by his win at the Stratos 2001
event).

All in all, the Hawk is more anuthentic but the Corse
has newer technology. You'll have to decide which is
more important to you. From Jeff's last posting, the
Corse may not be available for a while - it will be
interesting to see what they come up with,
though.

Just my .02

John B.
Whoops, I meant to say 16" instead of original 15". Omicron was having new
molds made from some original wheels... I'm not sure they've completed them yet
though.

-Dan
Ed,

I'm sending you a copy of the Hawk
brochure tomarrow.
Steve Ramm at Aerosim was a while
ago planning on importing kits for people. A recent
conversation I had with him was that due to his job situation
and time requirements and the relative
non-profitability (margin wise) of him bringing in the kits, he has
put that on the back burner. He has said that he
would help other to bring them in however.

I
have been talking with both Steve and Gerry about
being the official agent here in the us. Steve had no
objections and Gerry is directing all US inquiries to me at
the moment. Also I am working with Gerry on a US
pricelist for the Hawk Kit and options. Hawk plans a price
increase soon due to the increase of costs to him. The US
price will reflect overseas shipping to a US port and
import duties. I'll keep you posted when things become
official.

Also, the Litton / C.A.E. Corse I & S has been picked
up by Hennesy Racing and is currently under
re-design. I have been working with Lionel Gooch who heads
Hennesy. The kit is not quite ready for production yet. It
will be very similar to the Hawk with some minor and
major differences.
Body will be the same but the
chassis is a bit beefier in the central tub and the new
chassis will be a modular construction using (tentively)
Alfa 75 (Milano) suspension parts. The kit is still
some ways away from being saleable to a constomer. I
will keep the group apraised of the
development.

Jeff Davison
I don't think they're the same wheels. Back in
'97 (before I imported my kit) I found the US
importer for Tecnomagnesio and Campagnolo. Anyway, he was
importing the Stratos wheels then and they are still being
made by the same guy in Italy. Roberto Marchesini
bought the molds from Campagnolo when they sold their
wheel business. I don't know where Omicron got their
molds, or if they're being made by the same guy. Casting
magnesium isn't easy.

-Steve

PS. They have

Just wanted to say hello! I'm another collector

Here's a source for prints.
They are about $12
each plus postage.
They are sent in a secure
cardboard tube.

I have three on the way.

It
would be easier if your could read German, but luckily

I just stumbled across these again. They are
still available in cast magnesium for a small fortune
(around $900 - $1000 each depending on width). I think
the sizes are 8x15 up to 13x15. These are made from
the original molds by Roberto Marchesini and are
excellent quality. He makes racing motorcycle wheels for
Ducati, etc.

If anyone wnats them or knows anyone
who wants them, let me know.

-Steve
