Both of the primary engine options on the Hawk are easy enough to
source in the USA. They're somewhat rare, compared to newer Japanese
or American engines, but they are still common enough that they can
be found without too much difficulty.
The "base" engine is the 2-liter Lancia Beta engine. Granted, they
stopped importing Betas in 1982, but enough of them were imported
before that so supply isn't a problem. Keep in mind that there is
very little demand for Lancia Betas, and it's possible to find good,
low mileage fuel injected cars for about $1000. There are also
numerous suppliers around the world that specialize in the Fiat /
Lancia Twincam engine, so performance enhancement isn't a problem.
Getting a hot twincam past California emissions may be a problem, but
even a bone stock fuel injected 2-liter from an 82 Beta or Zagato
makes 120 horsepower, and will pass emissions without difficulty.
120 doesn't sound like a lot, but a 4-cylinder Hawk only weighs about
1800 pounds. That's a better power to weight ratio than many
sportscars through the early '90's.
If you can find an older engine that's emissions exempt, you can get
170 horsepower with racing cams and dual carburetors, or over 200
with turbo or supercharging.
The "standard optional" engine is the 3.0 liter Alfa Romeo 164
engine. 12 valve versions of this engine are easy enough to get a
hold of, if a little expensive. Figure something on the order of
$3000 for an engine out of a junk yard. The 164L engine gives about
the same amount of power as the original Ferrari Dino engine (190
HP), and more torque. As a result, v-6 replicas are quicker than the
genuine article. If you can find a 164S (210 HP), you'll be about 20
horsepower up on a Dino.
About the only Alfa engine that's really hard to find is the 24 valve
version from the 94-95 164Q. That's 230 HP, but they only imported
about 700 of them.
Hawk also does engine mountings for Ferrari Dino and 328 engines, so
you can try one of those if you've got deep pockets. Otherwise,
there are a few Honda engined Hawks in the UK and Japan. I think
Hawk Cars may be able to supply the mountings directly from the
factory, or perhaps put you in touch with their Japanese subsidiary.
If all else fails, Hawk cars will work with customers to develop a
custom configuration, but you need to supply most of the dimensional
data, and it wouldn't be cheap. It might be less expensive to go
with the slightly harder to find Alfa or Beta engine.

Anyone know what the final cost to put one together is? The badass
rally version?
Any trusted 3rd pary assemblers?
Which engine would you recommend? Accessories/upgrades?
I'm interested in one as a semi-daily driver and some track fun here
and there.
Thanks,
D
I'm sure getting a kit over from the UK wouldn't be a problem, and
hell, there are enough shops in SF to do a real nice job on the
bodywork... but finding a donor engine is the problem I think. There's
APE over in Tracy, but the hawk kits are geared to UK scrap yard
fodder. The issue may be what CA sourced engine is suitable for the
kit if, say, hawk could do the mountings.

Not on this side of the Atlantic, unfortunately. Stratos replicas are few and far between in North America. There are perhaps 8 Hawk / Transformer replicas that I'm aware of in the USA, but I don't think anyone has imported a Corse yet.
Corse cars hed been out of production for a few years, but are now available again new from Napiersport, their latest manufacturer. If you really want to see a Corse in the flesh, it is going to involve a trip to the United Kingdom. You can usually see several of them at the annual Stratos Weekend at the Abingdon CARnival (usually takes place the first weekend in June), and I think the Stratos Enthusiast's club hosts other small meetings throughout the summer.
Another big show where you might see a Corse would be the Stoneleigh Kit and Replicar show (also in the UK), in March, I think.
> Especially in the SF bay area or California in general?
I'm sure there's a couple that I don't know about, but the only owner I personally know in California lives in Santa Ana. His car (a Hawk HF3000) was still in storage in New Jersey the last time I spoke with him.
If there's anything else I can tell you, please ask.

There have been a few Stratos replicas built in Canada over the
years, but I don't know of any that I could point you to at present.
Steve Stahn built a 2-liter Hawk / Transformer Stratos replica in
Ontario, but he and the car have since moved to Detroit, Michigan.
Likewise, there was a Ferrari engined Hawk that originated in Canada,
but was sold on to another owner here in the 'States years ago.
Not sure of there are any active members of the Stratos Enthusiasts'
Club (formerly the Stratos Replica Club) in Canada at the moment. If
I hear of any, I will let you know.

Hello all,
Well after lurking on the list for a while I'm curious... I have wanted to
build a CORSE replica but I've still not seen any model of replica in the
flesh. Is there any auto show or race day that any show up to? Especially
in the SF bay area or California in general?
Thanks all for your time!

Jim,
you didn't leave much of a message, so I'm going to have to guess
what you wanted to know about stratos club membership....
Basically, there are two online forums: This Yahoo group, and the
Stratos forum on the StratosSuperSite
(http://www.stratossupersite.com/). Both of these are free, and you
may join, post questions, whatever you please without paying any dues.
There is also a paying club, called the Stratos Enthusiasts' Club.
Membership in the SEC is not required to utilize the online forums,
but it is strongly encouraged. Membership in the SEC gets you a nice
printed newsletter, as well as access to other club services. You
can visit the SEC club site at: http://www.stratclub.com/ If you
look through the pages there, you should find a contact for the club
secretary, and you can send him your application for membership.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I started collecting bits about 8 years ago and have since decided not
to build the kit. If you want the bits that I collected, just pay the
shipping and they are yours.
From a Beta, I have the handbrake and linkage, the intermediate
steering column, the washer bottle and the glovebox knob. From a X1/9,
I have two targa roof catches. The parts are in the Seattle, WA area.

Yeah, I just talked to him last week while I was in Detroit for the
SAE World Congress. If memory serves, he was going to Florida for a
family vacation starting on the 13th. He should be down there all
this week, and finishing up his trip with Sebring on the 20th.
Unfortunately, I don't have any contact info fro him in Florida,
although I can give you his cell phone number, just in case he has it
with him.

Hello,
De-lurking here for a moment.
I have the Corse brochure which lists donor parts/cars needed. If anyone
wishes a copy of it I can do so.
My choice is the Corse personally due to the suspension upgrades and
such...even tho it would be nice to have a replica that is as exact as
possible to the original.
Have a good week all!

Have you talked to John Logerquist lately? He's seemed to have
dissappeared from the face of the Earth. We were supposed to connect
for Sebring but he hasn't returned any of my emails.

I'm sure it'll be back in a couple of days. Until then, feel free to
ask questions here. It's not as well laid out as the supersite, but
it'll do for a short time. Many of the supersite members are / were
members of this group as well.
I'm going to email you a boilerplate letter I send when Hawk let's me
know when someone is interested in their kits. I try to cover all the
bases.

I have seen the list of required parts in the Hawk brochure. But it
is not very complete.
I want to get started buying some of the detail items while I'm
trying to decide who's kit to buy.

Currently I think there are only two choices for available kits. The
Hawk and the Superstratos.
The Hawk looks to be a very close replica of the original. The
Superstratos Corsa has a few features I like (wishbone rear
suspension) but under the skin it doesn't look as original.
I am looking to build a car that doesn't stray too far from the
original but has a few more modern updates. (ie better suspension,
brakes, 17" wheels)
Hopefully some of you can give me some advice or direction on what
is good or bad about these kits and any potential problems I may have.
Thanks,
Reed Herman

Other than Chris's post I have not seen or heard anything. I hope it
is back up soon. I am trying to plan my own Stratos build and I
really need all that combined knowledge to make good decisions.
