Hi,
I just about to replace the Metric Speedlines on my Sud Ti GCL with 14" rims
and 185/60 series tyres. Does anyone have any opinions on tyre choice? The
car does about 4000 miles a year mostly as a weekend toy, but my wife also uses
the car maybe once a week (in all weathers) and funds permitting I would like
to do 1 or 2 track days a this year. Does anyone have experience of
Yokohama's, Bridgestones etc, or are Pirelli P4000 or P6000 the best all-round
choice
Thanks
Philip O'Hara
Hi,
My heater seems to be broken! The fan works but only cold air is
coming in the car.I took it to a mechanic and he unblocked the water
pipes but it still doesn't work properly, it just warms up a little
bit ( can't almost tell)when i'm stopped for a long time
(egtraffic)and the coolant warms up more than the usual!
Can anyone give me the address of justsuds. Will they send me a parts
price list by post? Will they accept mail orders?

The headlights may be stiff to adjust, and they are not cheap
these days.
Basically you need to park the car pointing at a wall at a set distance
and check the beam pattern the headlights are throwing. I think there
is a diagram in the Haynes manual to show you what it should
look like. Normally an MOT tester will adjust headlights for little
or no charge while doing the test.
Other things to watch out for are the front brakes, headlight condition
and oddities such as there being a warning light for the fog lights (which
is built into the dashboard switch on a Sprint and fails when it feels
like it).
All the best
Keith
My Sprint's due it's MOT test in February (for those outside the UK it's an
annual safety/roadworthiness certification). I think it's going to be OK,
but I know one of the headlights is misaligned. I know, physically, how to
adjust it, but do any of you guys have any tips for how to tell if it's
correctly adjusted?
Thanks
Guy
... and it looks like the Sprint may have to go. :(
I haven't absolutely made my mind up yet, but I won#t let it go for less
than the £4,500 my insurance company and I both agree it's worth.

Just popped out to the newsagent. The UK's AutoExpress has a review of the
new 156 SeleSpeed semi-automatic 2.0 TS and Autocar has enhanced scoop shots
of the new '147'. Looks a bit like a stretched Bravo with a 156 nose. And
no, it's not much nicer than that sounds...

Got to the car park last evening to discover I'd been partially blocked in.
I managed to squeeze out of the space OK, and someone kindly watched the
front bumper to make sure I didn't hit it with the nearside corner as I
edged out. I was concentrating so much on her instructions that the first I
knew about how close the offside rear wingwas to the other door was when I
hit it.
I straightened up and got out of the garage and jumped out of the car. Half
a dozen huge blue scratches down the wing and across the edge of the
wheelarch. Felt quite deep, too. I was so angry with myself as I drove home.
I decided that, as the door was wooden, the worst of it might come out with
a bit of work, so as soon as I got home I reached for the Autoglym cutting
polish. I'm delighted - and more than a little suprised - to say that it did
the trick! There's no trace of the accident whatsoever! What felt like a
deep gouge down the side must actually have been in the paint I'd picked up
from the garage door.
Needless to say, I'll be a lot more careful next time...

Hi Fernando
In the latest price list for Justsuds which I have handy, a clutch
kit is listed at 99ukp. For my old 33 1.7 Sportwagon it cost me
about 220ukp for a clutch fitted about 3 years ago. Justsuds (in
this price list) has Greencloverleaf front pipes for 65ukp, centre
pipes for 50ukp and twin pipe rear boxes for 65ukp. I think
stainless steel centre and rear sections are availble for about
290ukp from Quicksilver(?) in London.
Your Sud should run on unleaded with no more than retarding
the ignition 3 degrees. I will forward you directly a tech
bulletin from Alfa listing which cars will run on unleaded.
All the best

Mmmm. My sprint's squeeking a lot when it first starts up. I've been
assuming it's a belt rather than the clutch... I think AlfaAid in Windsor
charge around £135 for a clutch, fitted. One of the specialist clutch
outfits would probably be cheaper but I had mine done at 'Mr Clutch'
(previous car) and they completely messed the job up.
> The second is that my exhausting pipe needs repalcement, can anyone

JustSuds are probably your best bet. I'm going to try to get hold of a full
price list and post it here, but in the meantime you can call them on 01932
222967 Eves and Weekends, 01932 400330 Daytime. Ian Brookfield who's on the
evening number can give you decent technical advice, either number is fine
if you know exactly what you want.
Again, KwikFit or whoever can probably source one and fit it for a
reasonable price - certainly less than the pice of the exhaust on its own
from an Alfa dealer. It just depends whether you want to let a KwikFit
fitter anywhere near your car. They're also extremely unlikely to have one
in stock and, in my experience, will try to convince you that your brakes
and/or shocks and/or tyres need doing too.
> Well last I would like to know if I can run my sprint with unleaded
> petrol, its a QV 1984.
This one I CAN answer. Kind of. AlfaAid say it's definitely OK with no
adjustment. I've run both mine with no problems. There have been a few
dissenters on the Richard Welty run Alfa mailing list, but the general
consensus seems to be that the iron block, alloy heads combination is fine
as it is.

There are no problems doing the service yourself. Basically the
following needs doing
Change engine oil and filter
Change Air filter
Change gearbox oil
Check timing
Change the spark plugs
Change cam belts
The only tricky bit to do is the gearbox oil, as the car needs to
be level as you fill the gearbox until it overflows, then leave it
to settle.
The cam belts are not too difficult to change, but they do take
time. The exact procedure varies depending on whether you have
normal valve adjustment or hydraulic tappets. A friend and I did
a full service (except for the gearbox oil) in less than a day.
You also need to generally check things over, such as lubricating
locks and cables, check wheel bearings (and adjust at the back if
needed), check brake pads / shoes (if a late car), check the alternator
belt (which you may as well replace), check the water pump, check
the CV joint gaitors and check the strut pan bearings.
The Justsuds kit includes everything you need except oil (which will cost
20~25 ukp for some sythetic oil to suit, and about 40ukp for a 5L can
of synthetic gearbox oil), but they supply non Alfa oil filters. Whether
they can orignal oil filter for an extra charge I do not know.
I think I was charged around 1.5~2 hours labour to change the cam belts
a few yers ago.

The fuse could well be the problem. As the fuse box ages the holders

slightly melt and contract. New fuses are a cheap and easy

One of the problems in the early days of a mailing list is that people join
and miss the earlier posts. Since OneL1st hasn't yet produced a digest or an

Went to the cinema last night. Enemy of the State with Will Smith. I can
thoroughly recommend it. Left the Sprint in the car park and came back to
discover I'd left the lights on. Pushed it around on my own for 15 minutes.
I can thoroughly recommend not doing it. Eventually found some people to
help push and, when that failed, jump start it. :(
Then drove in this morning on the motorway with a 33 P4 in front of me, a
146 alongside, another 146 in front of that and a 155 behind me for a big
part of the journey. In the UK that's pretty unusual - that many Alfas
together is normally an Owners Club event...

The Sprint's done just over 72,000 miles, so I thought I'd get this done. Of
course, 72k is the big one with cam belts etc to be changed. SGT, the local
Alfa dealer wants £280. AlfaAid want £240.
JustSuds will supply the complete kit of parts - including all the belts -
for around £60, but I'm not sure if it's a practical proposition to do it
myself. I have a small garage and basic tools, ramps, but no inspection
pit/hoist or anything exotic.
If DIY is NOT an option, how much seems a reasonable charge for the belt
change, assuming I do all the rest?
