Hi Andy, The spring and plate in the filter assy keep the filter up to the head of the housing to enable the filter to do it's job, filtrate foreign material....

Nope, the spring and plate push the filter into the top of the bowl so that oil actually passes through it. No spring and plate = no filtering of the oil. ......
