Hi,

May I suggest that the dwell angle business sounds a bit sus.... how would you
'correct' the dwell angle but still have spot on timing??? You'd have to be v
lucky or else I wonder about the dwell guage!!!!!!

I'd suggest to back track a bit and get your feeler guages out to set the
points. Do the timing. them try again.

good luck

regards

Andy Dodd

   Greetings again folks,

geez..my sprite issues at the moment all started when I decided to "do the
right thing" and do a few checks before going for a quick blat last sunday.

I checked the oil, coolant then brake fluid then a little deeper..

Using a meter, I checked the dwell angle which was a bit tight at 15 degrees ,
and opened it up to about 60.

I stuck the timing light on, saw a reasonable result and made no adjustments.

   Engine was sounding sweet as.

I tightened up the coil mounting clamp to body bolts as they were a little
loose.

I put some Penrite SU dash pot oil in the HIF44 and then went inside to have a
quick feed before departing.

When I started it up it ran like an absolute pig. Almost like 2 plug leads
were reversed or disconnected. ( i never touched 'em!)

I was thinking that the oil I put in the dash pot was finding its way into the
engine and fouling the plugs. I pulled the plugs and cleaned them ( they were
very black but not visibly oiled) and tried again with the same result.

It would run ok for a few moments, then rapidly deteriorate and stall.

But now... that I am thinking that it was an ignition problem, as my battery
completely drained by the next time i got to it a few days later , and now, with
a new battery, my ignition light is on, as described in yesterday's poorly spelt
post. (light is on when the car is off)

I never pulled the battery last weekend, so definitely did not reverse the
terminals and let the smoke escape.

does anyone have a clue what may have caused my alternator diodes to fry, and
ignition turn to krap?

Apparently, it is something I have inadvertently done in the execution of the
above tasks...which highlights the distributor and coil as the possible scenes
of the crime....

Would a fried alternator/rectifier cause my ignition to fail and drain the
battery?

I am perplexed...what have i done to upset Lucas-Prince of Darkness?

   Andy

Hi Peter et al,
I reversed the polarity once on my first car (HQ Holden) and i saw the
mysterious smoke come out of the alternator.
I definitely didn't so that this time, (although all my typos could lead one to
believe that I probably did.)

If what you say is true, then once i start the car, then the battery will not be
charging and the ignition light should burn brightly..to indicate that
problem... ( that was actually a poorly worded question.....if anyone can answer
it for me?)

Given that i am not keen to shell out for a whole new alternator (this one is
only about 3 years old)... Does anyone have experience in repairing them i.e.
soldering in new diodes?

otherwise i am going to go to the wreckers and get a 3-wire alternator out of
any likely candidate....as long as mounting lugs are at ~180 degrees

 cheers,

Andy

Andy,
IF indeed you have an alternator, you have blown out a few
diodes in the rectifier. If the car has an alternator, then it should
be NEGATIVE ground. Reversing the battery leads will destroy the
diodes and cause the ignition light to come on. At the very least
you'll need a rectifier. I hope that is all you need.

Andy,

Assuming you don't have any modern accessories wired in like a clock or
radio?

If you can temporarily wire a ammeter into one of the battery leads,
that will allow you to see the current drain, then start unplugging
things until you find what's causing the drain. If you don't have access
to an ammeter, a small light bulb should work too as long as there's
enough current drain in the circuit.

First I thing I would unplug would be the alternator as that should be
about the only thing that's permanently connected to the battery, unplug
both the main terminal and the smaller one to the ignition light.

Cheers,
Eriks

Ahh yes, thanks Colin, I had forgotten to mention that. 1970 model, MkIII with
wind up windows and soft top behind the seats.

Thanks,

Andrew.

G'day Andrew, and congratulations. You're welcome to come by any time.

What model Midget did you buy? Mk II Midget where the soft top comes off the car
and gets stored in the boot, or Mk III Midget where the top folds up behind the
seats? The body shells are different, and so is the hard-top.

Thanks Colin, and thanks for all your help over the phone the past few months.
When I get the chance I'll drop in soon to buy some of the parts I've been
pestering you about.

To those who contacted me, thankyou, I have now bought a car - a member of the
Newcastle club made me a very good offer. I have driven my newly aquired Midget
almost every day for the past couple of weeks and have been enjoying every
minute. I am going to try to make it to the drive next Friday, work permitting.

Anyway, I'm wondering whether anyone might have a hardtop they'd be willing to
sell. Personally I prefer to drive with the roof down, but a hardtop would
definitely help my fiancee to accept the car a bit more. Unfortunately while I
looked at two Midgets that came with hard tops I bought a different car that was
in better overall condition, assuming that the fibreglass roofs would be
reasonably easy to come by. So far though I have had no luck.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Andrew.

Being of the Pommie inclination, warm beer is not usually a problem...I will say
however that once we get over 35C a 'coldie' does become more desirable...

From this picture I'm wondering if we could make a new front section with an 'S'
bend in it to joggle over from the LCB, as it looks like the resonator should
run in the centre of the car with the rear box angling back across. Although as
you say it will get close to the spring on the MkIII and maybe the fuel tank!

the best performance. The Mini mob favour the RC40 system which is I believe
1.75" dia. As this doesn't fit a Sprite very well unless you want a tail pipe
that exits at 30 degrees. I wondered whether anyone out there had any ideas or
experience to offer as to the best silencer solution. Also they tend to use two
mufflers the first is cylindrical and not much bigger then 2.5" dia fitted in
line in the straight section then the tail box is a semi squashed affair. I dont
know whether having one or two mufflers does anything much for power or noise
but there isn't much clearence under the floor on the Sprite so single tail
muffler is probably the go.

Hmm, no takers for the windows, how about a standard 1275 crank & or conrods

No its not an EN40B crank, just a standard crank in what looks like good
condition. Ditto the rods - standard in what looks like good condition.

Of course what would I know - you are welcome to have a look and make up
your own mind - I am at Abbotsford in NSW.

Ian, The RC40 will fit, but you need to rotate it through 90° so that it's 5"
high and 3" wide. That way it fits nicely between the spring and the fuel tank.

Hi Colin, This looks like it might work with a bit of cut and shut action.

Might be helpful to cut and sleeve the entry and exit on the rear box to allow
it to be rotated for extra clearence.

I'll have to get down there and take some measurements!

G'day Ian

The RC40 works fine in a 1/4 elliptically sprung car, but you do need to cut off
and re-position the chrome tail pipe.

It doesn't fit so well in a semi-elliptic car as the rear half of the spring
gets in the way.

In either car, you can fit a short 5" resonator in front of the axle housing,
with the muffler behind the housing.
