Re: [seva] battery recommendations

Regarding battery selection and use, I forwarded your original message on to Dyno Batteries - a manufacturer of high quality, wet lead-acid batteries right here in Seattle - so you reduce your overall carbon footprint by not shipping from Santa Fe Springs?  I've used their products for over 25 years in DC Powered construction equipment in volume quantities.  I'll attach their link.  We've used all the big brand names and from my personal experience the chemistry and physics are all about the same - one of the best measures of a battery's potential performance is it's weight - the more it weighs the better its capacity - ''the simple rule when dealing with reputable suppliers".  Again from personal experience, the sealed batteries (AGM, Gel-Cell, etc.) do not perform as well because the energy limits are too constraining - one mistake and the battery's ruined. You have to be precise with charging and discharging (battery management system - and it's got to know which kind of batteries you're using) if you exceed the limits either way you damage cells.  Wet Lead-acid batteries are very forgiving.  Also, treating the batteries with an additive to prevent gassing and sulfation is important to long life and performance...

Subject: Re: [seva] battery recommendations

I run 15 DKA is one of my ev's and I think they are great! I also have one that runs on Trojans and another on Odyssey's.

The one number that many people skip is internal resistance. The lower number is always the most important as it dictates the spped at which voltage flows through the batteries. Most sellers (including Interstate) don't even know what the IR of their batteries are.  Odysseys are really low, DEKAs seem to be better, and Trojans a bit higher.

My 2C worth!

Craig
