Not even a Volvo can save you when there are rich a**holes racing their
cars on the streets. I guess only some of us know that racing is for the
track only! This looked like a late model volvo too (although difficult to
tell at this point.)
Anyone for a defensive and/or evasive driving course?

The next national VCOA meet is in Sedona, AZ in September. There will
be no track day. To my knowledge, the 2002 national event has not yet
been decided. The track events are a blast and would certainly be a
highlight to any event, but they get expensive, averaging around $150
per driver for 40 to 50 drivers. I'll check into the availability of the
Fontana road course when it's completed and see if we can pull it off.
If we were to have a national event in SoCal, then I think finding that
many Volvo drivers is feasible.

Greetings all, yes... Thunderhill is an AWESOME track. My Porsche Club
also used it, last year, for our annual PCA Parade event. What a weeklong
blast THAT was! We lucked into some great weather during the first week
in July. It was actually mild, like So Cal; in the lower 80's.
At any rate, I couldn't make it to the VCOA event. Drats! I was really
wanting to take my wagon up there, too. I felt it to be rather ironic that I
had just gone up there with my Porsche for the Concours D' Elegance event, of
which I took fourth place. It would've been really kewl to return
in Oct. Speaking of which... does anybody know if VCOA is going to have
another event like last year's? If so, perhaps central or southern Cal would
be in order.
Thoughts, views, comments?

I followed the Elsinore race track plans for a while, but things have
been real quiet for a few months. The developers are finding typical
opposition from surrounding land owners who have nothing but vacant
land, but don't want the likes of a race track complex anywhere near
their speculative investments as they hope to sell their land to a tract
home developer in the future. If I come across any news I'll pass it
along.

Thunderhill in in Northern Calif... about 1.5 hours north of
Sacramento. The Golden Gate Chapter of VCOA sets up race days there
about twice a year. I went during the last West Coast National Meet
last year. They also had one about a month or two ago and their
scheduling another in August. The Golden Gate Chapter site is at

Oops, I suggested in this last missive that Ray Rubio was the organizer of the
Speedvision GT Series race. What I meant to say was that he organized the local
SD race.

I wonder if this is part of the same plans that the organizer for the
Speedvision GT series (I think it's called this) was alluding to recently.
Ray Rubio, whose son, Ralph, runs Rubio's Fish Taco (a SoCal based fast food
restaurant), stepped in to put together a road race here in San Diego at the
Naval Training Center last year. Ray was quoted recently in the local fishwrap
that he was searching for a permanent site to host the American Le Mans Series,
along with other road racing circuits, in the San Diego area (or somewhere else
in the southland). Maybe the California Speedway was the "somewhere" that he
alluded to. Either way, if he is planning another site in the SD area it good
news. AND YES, IT IS ABOUT TIME.
Dan, did you ever hear anything more of a "Japanese" group looking to develop
a racetrack in the Elsinore area? Or is that a dead issue?

Even though my baby isnt up to perfect running order id love to take her out
and see how far over 120 she goes, thats as fast as i have brave enough to go
on the local freeways mainly out in the desert. the turbos rebuilt but have a
manifold leak due to a broken stud, other then that the suspension has been
rebuilt complete and engine like. sounds like a good idea to me if a group if
formed i am sure to attend.

Here's the news:
Lake Elsinore (Riverside County) is going to be sponsoring their First
Annual Rod Run on Saturday, August 4th (9 am to 4 pm). The event will be
open to all Hot Rods, Customs, Classics, Trucks, Harleys, and Special
Interest. They will also be recognizing club participation. They will be
closing down Main Street and making room for up to 800 cars. A bunch of
other stuff will be going on too with vendors, drawings, etc., and the car
event will be judged. I called the promoter today and they welcome our
participation as a club with any and all Volvo's that would like to
participate. Registration will be $20 and will include a free t-shirt if
registered by June 28th. I have flyers and registration forms for all who
are interested and I would like to hear some feedback from any of you who
might like to participate.

Hi Mark,
Yes, the center armrest is for the 240. It has a new leather cover on
it. It was custom made. The center part is all leather and sides are
matching vinal. I am asking $80 firm for it.
The Turbo wheels are newly sand blasted and poweder-coated clear, not
painted. Because they are clear coated, they have matt metal color
rather than bright silver color. They come with good center pices and
lug nuts. They are $350 firm.
Let me know if you are interested.
Thanks,
Jay

Ok gang,
The following will be in the works shortly.
We will be using two groups for mass email contact:
(1)The scvcoa group (the one your reading right now) will be kept as
a voluntary open discussion group for all scvcoa member who wish to
participate in discussions with other members. I have close to 90
member email addresses and I will send out invitations to all. I
have settings programmed so that only members who have joined the
group may post messages to everyone. This will keep out riff-raff
from the public. Discussion topics will be open, but certainly
should be Volvo or scvcoa related.
(2)The scvcoanews group, which I just created, will be used for
official club announcements. It is configured so it will not accept
any replies or messages for discussion. Only selected moderators
will be permitted access to make announcements to the group. I will
begin inputting our email list shortly so this will begin.
These groups will make my life a little easier when sending out group
announcements, as with the current configuation I must divide each
group message to go to a max of 20 emails at a time (spam
constraints). The Yahoo group will also allow people to subscribe
from our web page, or unsubscribe on their own if they wish.
Shortly, I will send out a group message the old way making basically
the same announcement to all our subscribers. My goal is to make
this as user friendly as possible, so our less technical members
won't get lost in all the technology. If you have any comments...
good, bad, agreement, disagreement... please let me know.
An FYI aside:
I am also collecting snailmail addresses at our meets as there are
still a bunch of SoCal Volvo owners who do not have marvels like
email. So if any of you happen to come across a local VCOA member
who doesn't have email and they would like to get periodic club
announcements by mail (I can't promise how periodic though), please
forward to info.
Thanks,
Your faithful buddy,
Dave
Sounds good Dave.

I asked Lee Cordner how he was handling the discussion board for his
chapter up north. He's always a good source of wisdom. Here it is...
Here is how we handle the board. Gary Lodge started ours, and I
publicize
it in emails from time to time. I say that it is another forum
that allows
two way communication between the people who are interested, and if
you want
more Volvo emails and more contact with other club members, join
up. I
continue to use our main email list to publicize events, like you
are doing,
and encourage people to use the board to ask questions, make
inquiries about
parts, etc. I get a lot of people calling up with an old car or
parts who
want me to help sell it. I don't want to bother the whole list
with this
stuff, but all the true crazies are on the board, so I send that
stuff out
in that forum. I just treat it like it is another email list
targeted
toward the nuts (self selected) I have about 300 members on the
email list,
and I think there are about 40 on the board. It allows some 2 way
communication between those who have signed up for it, but allows
me to
control the content going out to the general membership. I think
that is
important, because there are folks out there who will send gun
stuff, or
right wing, or left wing, or anti abortion stuff or other crap that
doesn't
belong. Nobody has tried that on the board, yet. Seems to be
working
fine.
Hope this helps. I'm sure it isn't the only answer, but it is
working fine
for us.
Michelle has signed on to the list....
Welcome Michelle,
I received notification that you signed up for the SCVCOA discussion board. A
few of us have been discussing pros and cons with this program. I have not
publicized the list to the general membership yet. I want to see how this
operates and get some feedback from you and a few others before we decide if
we'll use this board and how we'll set the parameters. This particular one is
the same one that Lee Cordner uses for the Bay Area Chapter. It can be
configured as it is now, as a regular discussion board, or it can be fine tuned.
It can also be changed to an announcement only forum where list moderators are
the only ones that can input messages. But I kind of like the idea that members
can offer feedback and share info, as long as it doesn't get stupid with jabber
or chit-chat. It's a good tool for sharing important info about events as long
as people use it. Right now I have the program set for messages to be
unmoderated.
Anyway, if you would like to review the previous discussion messages, go to the
Yahoo Groups site... http://groups.yahoo.com/ log in and select messages.
Please feel free to post your thoughts to this board.
Thanks,
Dave

Well,
This list is also highly tunable and limits can be programed. If absolutely
necessary, it can either be fully moderated or even turned into an announcement
only list where no discussion is permitted, except by selected moderators. So
it has flexability.

Good point Dave. maybe if we just let people know
that the Yahoo group is strictly as a mailing list to
foster communications.

Good point Michael. It's a gamble. The problem I was having with the other
method of sending out mass emails, when I received feedback from someone, it
went to me only and was not shared with the group unless I turned the mail
around and sent it again as a mass email. I don't want this to turn into a chat
room either, but if someone has an issue or idea for the group, or maybe a
question about finding a mechanic in their town, this would be more efficient.
I do have the option of signing everyone on our list up and it's up to them to
unsub if they don't like it.

Hi Everyone,
I'm subscribed....the only thing I would warn against is that this
group
doesn't become the main source of info on the net about the club. The
website should be #1. It is a great way to to post messages and all,
but I
suspect that not everyone on the email list will want to subscribe to
Yahoo
to get information. You may end up losing a good portion of people
that are
on the email list.
I had origianlly set up a listbot, unfortunately only about 10 people
ever
signed up for it out of all the people on the email list.
