>At Eastchester Middle School in Eastchester, N.Y., where Tom Boissonnault
teaches technology classes, the curriculum has evolved in recent years. In
addition to learning about design and engineering, Mr. Boissonnault's students
are getting hands-on experience by restoring a vintage Vespa motor scooter.
>
>This is the second year that the class has pursued a scooter restoration
project. The plan began in the summer of 2008 while Mr. Boissonnault was working
at home, rebuilding his own Vespa while his children played. It struck him that
the simplicity of old scooters made them a perfect vehicle for students to learn
about engines and electrical systems.
>
>"All along I had a Vespa sitting in the loft of my barn that I bought for
parts," Mr. Boissonnault, 41, said. "I brought it into school, and the project
was born."
>
>The original project bike, a 1966 Vespa Allstate, was a real challenge. It had
been recovered from the bottom of a lake, Mr. Boissonnault said, and was covered
in rust. He bought it on eBay for $202.
>
>The restoration became a regular part of class, with a few hours each week
devoted to it. Half of the Eastchester student body takes the technology course
in the fall, and the other half in the spring. In order to allow all of the
students a chance to take part, the work was divided up. The fall classes
focused on the body, stripping the paint and removing rust. In the spring,
students began to rebuild the powertrain.
>
>Getting the work schedule right wasn't easy, Mr. Boissonnault said. "We almost
didn't finish it."
>
>After the scooter was done, it was displayed at the last meeting of the
Eastchester Board of Education.

I went to the Orlando location, which is a little repair shop and bought it in
person. IIRC, they told me they are the makers of it.

Bob tried his Sunpass in it, and it does fit as advertised. I loop the thing
around my mirror and tighten the cord around the Majesty's brake reservoir.

Mark from Frito Lay sent me an email. He and I traded business cards to share
the pictures we were taking of each others groups. He thanked us again for
participating in the ride and sent a link to his pictures. Got a couple good
shots of us. :) Here is the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/heedthecall/

Real quick ride report from todays Toys for Tots Poker Run.

Breakfast at Einsteins Bagels....yum. Then off to Frito Lay, the start location for the ride. Scooters were well represented by The Crew. Frito Lay put out a full spread providing snacks, donuts and drinks, along with a neat 2009 Poker Run shirt.

First stop was a 17 mile run to the West Orange Bike Trail.

Second stop was a 33 mile run to the Dade Battlefield Memorial.

27 miles to the next location which was the Inverness Boat Ramp.

Ending location, Leesburg Harley Davidson and Vespa Dealership.

At each location you would pull a card. Frito Lay had drinks and snacks at each stop location. At the Leesburg HD they had the band Kingstreet playing. Pizza and Boston Market for lunch by donation.

Everyone had a good time...all while raising money for the ToT Charity.

It was still early and The Crew decided to head to Mount Dora. Took a great scenic route that ran along Lake Dora into the city. A little snack and some shopping and we were off again, taking a back roads route towards Orlando that Anne had found.

To say the weather was beautiful would be an understatement. Saw some great out of the way places. At one point we were well into Citrus County. Always a blast when we get together to ride.

Left the house at 0630. Home by 5:30pm. From driveway to driveway I logged 214 miles. Thank you to all that made this ride possible.

Yes it is true...I finally broke down and picked up some gear. :) Helmet was an
early Christmas present from the wife. I was not sure if I was going to like it
or not, but after yesterday I am sold on the modular. Thank you Alison for
pushing me in the right direction. :)

Anne, ice cream was the least I could do. Thank you for my gremlin bell. :)

Commander...you were missed. And my apologies for not clarifying earlier. In
my Photobucket I have so many pictures that I list them by month and year. I
have since changed that sir to reflect the date.

Here is the link to the photo's:

And my first look at Ed's jacket! The boy has GEAR now! :) He even has a
modular full face! It matches his jacket and his scoot. Looks good going
down the highway. That's more than I can say for my poor khaki cargo
Sliders. Sorry, there is no way to make them look good, especially with
soft armor underneath. They are strictly utilitarian, like my saddlebags
(on the scooter, I mean).

What a pretty day it was! The weather just kept getting better all morning.

I want to go back to the Dade battlefield to learn more about it, and then
to FL National Cemetery (been there many times)...sounds like a good weekday
ride. In Center Hill, that cemetery is supposed to be interesting, too.

I made it home with no drama, but I was too tired to go out to eat, so I
ordered a pizza for us. Oh, and yes, Ed, the Magic Riders included this
event in their list of upcoming rides, that's how I found out about it. I
found the email.

Hope to catch you all on another ride!

Damn, wish I could join you guys for the poker run, but I will be taking part in
the Brain Bowl tournament Fri. and Sat. and using the few brain cells that are
still operating! December sounds like alot of fun, and any excuse to ride over
to Tampa is a good one for me! All I will say is that in regards to scooter
mechanical problems, I am sick and tired of shady questionable scooter
"mechanics" and they have caused me nothing but aggravation, both from a
dealership and garage level to the "shadetree" variety.

What time is agreeable for everyone to meet at the start point? I do not know
exactely how a poker run works (I know the poker hand part, but how is the ride
started?, in groups?, who ever when ever?, what are the management specifices?)
and thought it would be good to ride together.

Thoughts?
