ok...was looking at that one on the sprint site.....i went thru all the
accessories and did not see a connection cable for that phone...where do you
get that? Do you have to pay for the laptop connection or is it all thru the
phone? Is there a difference between the unlimited web and the plan on the
bottom of the page that uses the card?

But, if you use it during the day you will have to pay phone minutes,
right? On sprint there is NO charge for minutes at any time for web
access. You have to get the $35 plan plus $10 for the web access for a
total of $45 but the web time is UNLIMITED and 115 Kbaud.

The Sanyo SCP 4900 is the phone I have and it has the speaker phone
feature. It also has a color screen that you can actually surf the web
on. But the screen is too small and you spend all your time scrolling
around to see it all. But with the cable connected...you can get one on
the internet on E-Bay even though Sprint will tell you they are not
available....to the computer USB port the computer screen becomes your
screen and the computer keyboard becomes your keyboard so you dont have
to use the phones keyboard. The phone just becomes the modem.

You are correct on the connect speeds but in error as to Verizons
charges. We pay 39.00 per month for 400 anytime, unlimited night and
weekends and national coverage with long distance. Never paid a dime
for internet use. Just long in after 9:00 pm and on weekends. Yup, its
a blistering speed of 14,000 baud but for email, it works fine. For
faster service, Sprint is the logical choice but you have lesser
regional coverage sites.

Sounds like your asking, "How high is up":....<g>
I think that you should first determine where you plan on traveling and
then find a service that is prevelant in that particular area.
I think that you will find, looking at the mendioned cell providers
national map, Verizon has the nation covered far better than any other
provider. In traveling for 6 weeks thru NM, AZ and CA, the only time we
were without Verison service was in the Joshua Nat'l Forest near 29
Palms. Sprint seems to be very popular and what I've heard, very
dependable along the interstate. ATT is also very popular. Cingular
may not be as well received nationwide.

Again, your milage may vary but it really depends on the area of the
country you are trying to cover, best. Check each providers National
Coverage Map.

I don't know how they know, but when I got my Verizon bill after a bit
of traveling, it listed everyone of my internet conect calls as
"internet". No additional charges but it did know I was calling my
providor LD.

I currently use a Compaq Presario laptop with an Ositech Trumpcard
(http://www.ositech.com/Products/koh.htm) on a Nokia 6360 cell phone.
I use AT&T wireless service at the cell phone per minute rate.

The OS is Windows 2000 Pro with SP3. I have a cell phone profile that
I select when the laptop boots so you don't have to change parameters
depending on how you connect. (ie I also have profiles for dialup,
LAN and wireless lan depending on where I am connecting from.) The
connection speed is S...L...O...W..., However, most of the time I am
using pc anywhere to connect to a network server for trouble shooting
that only sends changes to the console and screen.

I also have my e-mail configured to only download message headers and
NOT remove e-mail from the server. I can then get any e-mail messages
I really need after reviewing the headers and then get all of my e-
mail when I get back Home.

For the most part this works great on the weekends when I may need to
provide client support to a network or server and want to be outside
camping with my family which is almost every weekend.

Yes, I have full internet connection, just like at home. There is
nothing mickey mouse about it. BTW, you dont want the $5 add on as it
charges you for the minutes. The $10 addon gives you unlimited time on
the web and free week end and evening minutes AND 300 daytime minues as
well. BUT the web accedd is UNLIMITED!!!

This is an urban myth. I dont know where they came up with this stuff.
But you probably were talking to someone who didnt have any idea what
he was talking about. If you want the latest skinny check this out.

The Sprint web site is not real clear, but if you go to
www.Sprintpcs.com then click on "View Service Plans and Coverage areas"
then click on the "tab" labeled "PCS service plans" then put in your zip
code and click "show plans" Then look at the charts and you will see
the various plans. The 300 minute plan in the lower chart is $35 and if
you look above in the upper chart you will see that if you select that
plan WITH UNLIMITED PCS VISION that it is $10 more. The $10 add on is
what you need for the web access. The $35 plan is the minimum PHONE
plan that you must have for the $10 unlimited PCS Vision (the web
access) to be added on. The 300 minutes apply ONLY to telephone usage
and NOT to WEB connection which is UNLIMITED.

Remember, "VISION" is the name of the plan and it takes special phones
which are generaly discounted to where they cost less than $50.

If you still dont get the straight scoop, I have a name in Corpus
Christi...yes its a long distance call....but well worth it....who can
set you up, and mail the equipment to you. He is the one that set me up
and it works and no BS about .39 a minute or anything else. I have a 2
year contract and it says $10 a month PERIOD.

Cant imagine that 115 K baud is not fast enough. That is 4 times faster
than a standard telephone connection through an ISP!!! Maybe you have
the old sprint version which is only 14K baud...aproximately 1/10 the
speed of the latest version???

I dont know anything about earthlink. Except for the Ham version of
earthlink which I dont think is what you are talking about. You dont
need a sprint PCS dialer if you have the latest Sprint service. Just
connect the phone to the laptop and press the "web" button on the phone
and it connects to the web and opens the browser on the screen.

When I called Sprint this weekend they said that they are trying to change
the $10 availability and that they have started notifying people that if you
use the phone as a modem they will be charging .39 a minute for it. I asked
how they would know and he said that they would check the number dialed.
They want people to now buy their Air Card which is $40 for 20MB of data....

So not sure if this will last, be enforced or what?

I have AT&T service with a Sony-Ericcson T68is phone. The phone
communicates with my Dell Inspiron 8200 notebook computer via
infrared. Haven't had the phone long, but I have made the Internet
connection and tried it out some. Not sure about the speed - it
seems like it was on the order of 30kbs or so on the test sessions.
We have not been on the road with it yet. AT&T's pricing structure
is a little steep unless you buy one of the mMode plans. For
intermittent use, I may opt in and out of the mMode plans.

Well, there are plans and there are plans and there are networks and
there are networks. Some will say the Sprint network isn't as good as
another....BUT.....here is the important distinction. As far as I know,
NO ONE offers wireless internet to your computer for only $10 a month
and no minute charges and no data volume charges. Just $10 a month for
24 hours a day 7 days a week at 115Kbaud. Yes there are places where
you cant reach a Sprint digital tower, places where maybe you can reach
a Verizon tower, but Verizon charges you by the minute or by the amount
of data and I can bet it will be more than $10 a month. And, the last I
heard Verizon was limited to 14K baud...prety slow compared to 115
Kbaud. There just isn't a better wireless web deal on the market now
than the $10 a month unlimited web time offer of sprint.

BTW...I have no financial interest in Sprint and only own one of their
phones which I connect to my laptop to surf the web for LESS than a wire
ISP. With the Sprint phone you dont need an ISP, just a phone and a cable.

I have a question about services.

Some people have Verizon,some have ATT,some Cingular,etc,etc.
I realize that not every plan works for all people but I'm wondering what
your thoughts are of one over the other!

We wouldn't be big time users of any plan and can't afford a really big time
minute plan anyway!

So let's hear it from those that are happy with a low (somewhat) minute plan
and does it work where (and when)you want it to?

Yes sprint charges a piddling $10 a month for all the data you can
download, 24 hours a day 7 days a week at 115Kbaud or more. There is NO
by the minute charge and it doesnt use your cell phone minutes. I dont
see how you can beat that.

This is the type information that some of you are looking for. This is a good
site for Pocket PC's and Wireless Phones. This article gives the numbers plus
user/password for Sprint, Verizon/Altell, that are used with your laptop also.

I use the a Verizon phone, Kycocera 2235, to access both. I also use a Kyocera
data cable for said phone. It hooks to the USB port on the laptop. There is no
charge for the connection with Verizon or Sprint if you have a Verizon plan.
Only your connection minutes are charged at the regular rate.

I've had the cable and correct modem to do this for several years now
without using it. I just recently finally tried it - I'd tried to
test it from home a few times, but my signal strength here is VERY
poor. We were over where the MH is stored preparing to FINALLY move
into it for fulltiming, and I took my phone, laptop, and cable with
me. I had over 100 messages to download. My experience that one
time was that it dropped out a number of times (not sure why, others
who've written about using this setup generally haven't mentioned
this problem provided they had at least 4 bars of signal strength.)
However, it actually did work - slowly, but I didn't care - I was
just tickled that I could get Email this way at least sometimes!

I'm reading the WiFi info avidly trying to understand what it is and
how to use it. I've also read about Sprint's Vision plan, which
seems to allow cell to laptop connection at up to 100K, and available
around urban areas and along some Interstates, and apparently
growing. I'm tickled to have a place where I can suck up the
knowledge of people much more informed about these things than I am!

Hi Cheryl,
I dropped AT&T two years ago 'cause the only way you can do internet with them
is either their high speed, high cost premium service around major ciities, or
the "limited content service" on your cel phone screen. AT&T doesn't have a no
extra cost "data" network for internet surfing like the Verizon Quick 2 Net; and
Sprint now charges for their equivilent service ie:, a cel phone tethered to a
computer, according to their web page.

I am using an IPAQ 3635. You will need a PCMCIA sleeve and a PCMCIA WiFi
card. I don't use it very often. I may when I get on the road. It would
be light as an email device.

I use a large laptop for mostly everything. I have put away my desktop

All of my WiFi experience is local. I have not tried to use it in a very

PCMCIA cards for the use of fellow campers. The cards are getting down in

I have Direcway 2 way satellite internet here. I have made it portable.
This is a no-no with Direcway, but if I take care to align I may get away
with it. The dealers of mobile Direcway such as Motosat are pushing
Direcway to enforce their policy of no user aligned dishes. Direcway will
be able to do this by registering the "ranging" of each user's transmitter.

I noticed last night that Direcway dropped my transmitter for a transmitter
test last night. I was put in a queue for about 30 minutes for the test.
Maybe they are doing just that now. I was able to use my cellphone as the

I have the equipment to use my HF rig, Pactor terminal, and an Airmail

Thanks Al for getting this started. I build wireless networks and it
appears as if there is considerable interest in wireless networks
among the RV community. I notice there are 47 members already. It
seems to me it would be beneficial for campgrounds to install
wireless networks.

I look forward to replies to your initial message and an ongoing

Four years ago we sold our home, land, gave away what we didn't sell
and went full time. Equiped with a Nokia cell phone and connected
with an interface cord to a notebook computer we obtained and sent
our Email and voice communicated with our family. Service was slow
but using Juno we were able to log into our server from everywhere we
tried. Being essentially a radio setup it was too slow to do much
surfing.
Today we use a WiFi wireless built into our new HP notebook and we
find we can download from anyplace there is a signal available. That
includes our son's house where he has a wireless network router that
sends me a signal out to my motor home while in his driveway. We
also have been in two (2) Flying J locations which had a wireless
router which sent a signal out to our motor home. Saved going into
the resturant and plugging into the phone jack at the table.

How would I explain this to my grandfather?

I would like to start a discussion of your experiences with availability and
satisfaction with 80211b (WiFi) wireless Internet service that is becoming
available in some RV Parks around the country.

If you have had an opportunity to try this type of service please respond with
your comments as to cost, speed and feelings about this. It does require a WiFi
card in your laptop PC but some new models have it built in.

Regards,

Al Sorkin
