Malc,
I have not been following the list very much as of late due to other commitments
so I'm not sure what all has been covered by others or what things you have been
trying.
My 612 was hard to get started when I first got it together. With everything
being new the engine is tight and does not kick over a freely or fast as one
that has been broken in. Then you have to play around trying to find out what it
is she wants (more throttle, less throttle, more tickling, etc.).
My experience with the 612 and the Amal is that the pressed in pilot jet is not
quit right for the 612 with the race cams. I don't know what your setting is on
the idle screw. The standard setting for most Amals to start with is 1 1/2 turns
out. However with a 612 I would start with 1/4 to 1/2 turn out. Other 612 owners
I have talked to have all ended up with the idle screw at about 3/4 turn out.
I've modifield my Amal to use Mikuni screw in jets in place of the pressed in
bush. I increased the pilot jet size until I could get the screw to the proper 1
1/2 turn out. But before that I was never more than about 1/2 turn out for it to
start and idle.
