It would be probably time to contact blueskymotors to find out how many and
how expensive the conversion parts to NIMH would be ... Or it may be time to
actually build a kit for the conversion itself .... Right now the NIMH
conversion first has all the correct parts and charging algorithm etc. to make
for a changeover ...
even with the NIMH changeover we need a good company that will provide us with
a regulator system to protect the cells from over charging ... I believe that
we may have found 2 answers at present ... both need testing .... I will be
testing one of them this month on two ranger ev conversions ...
if we try to make our own kit we can run into a lot more issues ... limiting
the charging ...
lead acids are a lot higher charger algorithm harder to control a 420 volt
charge then a 350 to 385 volt charge ... the cooling issue ... and then the 39
sense cable issue ......
do you do the 12 volt spoof first or do you up the cells to 117 to accomodate
them ...
Then we also will need to address the legality and liability of changing the
system from a known original system to a untested system .........
a Lot to think about , it is not just the battery money you need to think
about ...
a kit to convert these presently is still going to tip the $20K mark to do it
right ...
I am all for doing this but everyone needs to know up front the costs as I
hate to see a bunch of owners put up everything they can scrape together for a
set of batteries and then find out they are still $6 to $8K away from getting
their ranger ev on the road ...
Thanks, Lan

right now by the time you pay customs fees and shipping a set of 100 Hi-Power
cells at 100AH will cost right at $15K .................. That is through a
reputable U.S. company .. buying direct from anyplace out side the U.S. can be
tricky and not guaranteed ...
the other subject is a U.S. company can claim a warranty or Guarantee and you
can make them stick by it .. a company outside the U.S. is hard to enforce any
warranty ...

OK, let's talk $$.....what is the right price? How much are people willing to
write checks for to get a new LiFePO4 pack today? If we're at all close, I'm
willing to work to make it happen. If you're interested in a Ranger EV pack,
please share the price at which it works for you. The prices of these cells
continue to get better and better, we've got opportunities to leverage with RAV4
owners and other EV vehicle companies. Let's find a way to make it happen. Maybe
Lanny can share what he's paying now for packs?? (I don't mean to put you on the

Larry, Karen and Terry, Good to hear from all three of you on LiFePO4! I'm
convinced that right now, LiFePO4 offers the best hope for extending the life of
the Ranger EV beyond the life of the 8v PbA today or NiMH packs tomorrow. The
weight and range and safety and commercial availability all point toward
success. But, I'm not convinced that they're a 'plug and play' solution today in
the Ranger EV. We may be close, but LiFePO4 seems to take more TLC from a
charging standpoint and there may still be some unknowns lurking out there. That
said, if there's enough interest, there's no reason not to pool the resources of
the group for a buy. I'm still concerned that LiFePO4 group buys in the past
resulted in packs with bad cells and some general unhappiness. Different
supplier and improvements in technology may help. Lanny's really been leading
the charge (pun intendied) on this effort...... does Lanny think we're ready for
a large scale buy?? How price
sensitive are LiFePO4 cells right now?? I know Lanny's bought cells for about
3-5 packs. How much do you think we can save by buying enough for twice or three
times that many?? Anyone have any ideas?? Scott

I can check with the Bluesky center here in Sebastopol, Ca about prices for
different quantities. California sales tax is high though. I have 100
100amphr highpower cells coming in Monday that I am not intending to put in
my other ranger unless the purchaser of it wants to pay me to install them.
I could offer that to someone local like Karen and Terry Larson. Or I
suppose I could travel out of my region. My white truck was one of the
first if not the first to have a LiFePo4 pack in it and before we got clear
on the charging issues, thus it was compromised. I am getting 60 miles
range. I am intending to drop the pack soon and check for significantly
weaker cells to swap out in hopes of increasing the range or at least get it
to stop power limiting when I do a significant amp draw. Scott the farmer.

Ian, We need a Non-NiMH wiring harness solution. There are way too many PbA
trucks and way too few NiMH wiring harness assemblies. We need to design a
LiFePO4 specific assembly and make that available for conversions. We just can't
get there by consuming the few NiMH parts that are still available. Scott

Scott

Larry,
Where are you located? Perhaps one of us could bring a known good
charger to your truck and see what is up?
Also, look for the messages about NGS testers, you will want to get one
or make contact with someone who does have one that you can borrow (or
buy a part interest in etc.).

Larry, Welcome to the Ranger EV group......you've made the right choice in
buying a Ranger EV. Can you tell us which Ebay Ranger EV you bought, that may
help us understand the problem you're having. Did you buy this from Connecticut
by chance? I assume the truck wasn't running when you got it. Before you start
cutting and modifying, give us a chance to help you sort it out. Scott

Daniel, you can find the workshop manual here. It's a BIG pdf file so it may
take awhile to download depending on the speed of your internet connection. I
wouldn't try it on a dialup connection. Once you've saved the file to your hard
drive, you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it, but that's available free.
Let me know if you have any problems. Scott

Pierre, the Ranger EV Shop Manual is available here. It will take some time to
work through it, but the BCM-OP codes are all in there and they're explained.

Woops, the box labeled hydraulic pump that arrived yesterday turned out to be a
replacement pump for the 2-post automobile lift I didn't order, and not the
Ranger EV hydraulic pump that I did order. Imagine my surprise today when I
opened the box and found a huge plastic hydraulic fluid reservoir attached to my
new pump! My joy at getting the pump I wanted was short lived.......but I'm
learning patience.

Good morning Scott,
These are available from a friend of mine and I am having him send one to me so
I can check it out. I believe the software is original 3.2 and the cards are
original. I am not sure if they have the original graphics. I will make sure it
works in my NGS tester. I would like to sell them directly to those who want
them.
Thanks,

Pierre,
You would be extreemly lucky to get another year out of the lead batteries
even if you could find another battery (module). These batteries are at
least six or seven years old, more likely much older, amazing for lead that
they are still working at all. Bottom line is it would be nearly impossible
to nurse them any further without stressing them: too long on duration,
hills and cold will no doubt make them work too hard and they will fail. So
umless you reall like to live on the edge and remove the battery pack
frequently you'd be best to try to work on another solution. For what it is
worth, I was able to replace a module with 8-4v batterys 2 in series 4 times
in parallel to try to emmulate the existing modules, It worked but I do not
think it is a good long term solution. Good luck.
Bouty
