Not sure if they were available on a Sedan(?), never seen one. It would
be possible to put them on a Sedan. Though they were an option on the
Hatchback (I think all years?). The only place I would know to get them
is in a junk yard.

that happened to my car about two years ago i went to the junk yard and got
a new one out of an old pinto but when you take the old one out the
speedometer detatches from the cable by placing a screwdriver in the slot
and twisting it should come right off. then reattaching the cable to the
new one is hard i found it easiest to take out the radio and reach through
there to get to the back of the instrument cluster.

SVOs -- you'll love 'em or hate 'em. This is my fourth Mustang Fox body
(79-93 Mustangs), with the first three being V8s (84 and 85 175 hp carb
cars, and an 88 f.i. 200 hp car. Convertible, hatchback, and coupe
respectively). What I liked about them was the low-end torque and a sexy
exhaust note -- especially that convertible.

The SVO has a similar amount of power, but it's a different kind. If you've
ever done any rifle shooting, it's like the difference between shooting
smokeless powder guns, and black powder. The SVO, when it puts out power,
kind of lifts you toward your goal, rather than jerking you there as the V8
would. Hard to explain, but it's more like flying than driving. And the
turbo whistle is special. Yet by its very nature, the turbo chops up the
exhaust noise to the point where, at idle it sounds more like an Accord
than a Vette.

All I can say is, drive one and see. Turbos aren't for everyone. To me
they're the thinking man's sports car, because it's HOW they do the job
that makes WHAT they do so satisfying.

Richard,
Oh, I thought you were talking about sway bars, not windups. I didn't
know they made them for pintos.
Do you like your SVO? I'm thinking about buying a mustang. I'm torn
between the SVO and 5.0. It seems like the SVOs sell pretty cheep for
what you get.

Thanks, Ian, I have a rear M2 sway bar, and even a M2 rear axle on the car,
though the sway bar won't attach because the body mounts aren't present on
the Pinto. So I'm running ADDCO units front and back, with P/U bushings,
and the setup is great.

But it's the TRACK bars I'm after, sometimes called windup bars, that are
specifically made for the Pinto (kind of like trailing arms).

As far as the 2300, I have a 100hp per liter 2.3 with World Class T5 in my
SVO already!

Richard,
Mustang 2 suspension parts fit, if you can find a cobra 2 it will have
the rear sway bar, there will be some mods, but its easy. I'm sure other
mustang 2s have it too.
Pick up a street rodder mag. (or something like it). They will have adds
from all kinds of companies selling pinto/mustang 2 front end parts.
What you can do to the front end of your pinto is amasing. There are
probably more front end parts out there, for a Pinto than any thing
else. They just dont sell them for pintos. They sell them as hipo up
grades for T buckets and other old street rods like that.
If you are going low budget, get mustang 2 V8 springs and sway bar.
Just cut the springs down. On a '72 you may need the mustang spindle, or
lower control arms to conect the sway bar.
As far as the engine goes, get a 2300 and a 5 speed. What you would
spend to get 150 hp with a 2000, you could get 250 with a 2300,and there
are plenty more of them when they blow up.

Anyone have any of the old speed parts for the Pinto (in my case, a 2000):

Hurst short shifter
autocross front springs
track bars for rear

They're long discontinued by the old players, like Racer Walsh, but I'm
starting to autocross my 72.

Thanks!

Yes, Ted, you were right. You win the Golden Pinto...

My timing belt disentegrated... I guess being 20 years old, It just decided it
had had enough... The guy at the garage just laughed... said I should be able
to get another 34,000 miles out of it...

I'll probably go ahead & change out the ignition module pretty soon as a
preventative measure...

thanks to all...

I bought a 77 pinto for $100, brought it home, put in a module and it
ran great. The previous owner had just replaced the module, he didn't
do it right and blew it out right away.

Make sure to the ignition switch is off and the battery is disconnected.
Then mount the module to the car, then plug it in. It should be
grounded before it is plugged in.

I have a 74' Pinto. She's in good condition. But the engine is a little
too small for my taste.
It has the original 2.0 4cyl in it. I'd like to put a 2.3 in it. If
there's somebody living around Tulsa,OK that has one for sale I'm
interested. Either that or If anyone can point me in the right direction
to finding a bigger engine. That would help out a lot...
I'm going to send in a picture of my Pinto some time. I would now, but
the exterior is kin da ugly. anyway thanx people... Jeremy

I've got a 1979 Pinto Runabout. I was driving through town today and it just
quit. Wouldn't crank. Plenty of gas, but no spark. I bought it last week so
I don't know the car well. (I paid $800 for it and it has 34,000 original
miles - immaculate body & interior).

Any suggestions? I changed out the rotor, distributor cap & the ignition
coil. HELP!?!?

Jeff,
You said that it wouldnt crank. Did that mean it wouldn't start, but the
engine will turn over, or it wont turn over at all? It sounds like the
ignition module may be bad, if it turns over. It's the little box bolted
to the fender wall that says MOTORCRAFT on it with two plugs for wiring.
If it wont turn over, check the fused link, and the alternator. I hope
this helps.

Hey Jeff. I have an '80 Cruisin' Wagon that started doing that
to me a number of years ago. I'd be driving down the road and, just as
if you turned off the key, it would die. Thing is with mine I could
just start it right back up. What it was, is, there's a module of some
kind stuck to the (i think) passanger side fender that went bad...Okay.
I just looked in my Chilton's (and there's even a picture of this thing
on the front cover :-). It's an "ignition module" and it's stuck to the
*drivers side* fender, near the ignition coil (about 5" or 6" square
and 2" deep).

Maybe you can investigate that. I don't think it cost that much
at the time (more than ten years ago).

Anyone have any experience with racing the Pinto in Solo II? I've run mine
once, and it's already modified enough that it competes as a D Street
Prepared or the similar local class.

In other words, what works?!

1) get a Hemmings Motor News at your local book store & find several junk
yards specializing in Ford parts.

or

2) Look at Racer Walsh (www.racerwalsh.com) for a replacement for your
part.

Hope this helps...

Hi,Scott, as for literature I have:

"Pinto 1972 Owner's Manual"
"1971 Pinto Do It Yourself Manual" (well used)
Ownercard
"1971 Pinto Operating Features"
"Warranty Facts Booklet 1971 Model Maverick and Pinto"
"Ford 1971 Passenger Cars Car Care and Operation"
"Ford Consumer Information" sheet
"Pinto Final Vehicle Inspection 100% Certification"
Ford Passenger build sheet

"America . . . Your 1971 Fords are ready" large sales brochure.

"Pinto" foldout sales brochure. This one's special because, once it's
folded out, the reverse side features a cutout Pinto (red) that can be
folded up into a cardboard car, and even trimmed out with the Rallye
package.

"Ford 1972 Car Shop Manual" five volume set (reproduction). The Pinto is
prominently featured in this, often being used in lead illustrations.

"How to Modify Ford S.O.H.C. Engines" by Vizard, the definitive work on the
hopping up the 2.0 motor, which I think is out of print.

All the turbo titles, 'cause at one time I had the car turbocharged.

One of these days I'll get around to posting the parts I have.

Look on Gerald's Pinto Showcase and check out the color photos of the 72
Pinto with 9800 Original Miles on it. It shows some great pictures of the
Engine. If you want more he might give you the email address for the owner.

I have the showroom book for the 1972 Pinto. Will that help?

Anyone know of a source (a book, for example) with COLOR photos of the 2
liter engine compartment? I have a fair Pinto library of my own, but all
pics are in b&w.

Going to take advantage of a need for a new water pump, to put my engine

few items got repainted (or relocated to make room for the turbo, now
removed).

There is some problems with the Excite Community, "Pinto People". Sometimes it
works, sometimes it doesn't. Is everyone having this problem too?
Usually get an error message, but if I try again it sometimes works.
