The ABS light only comes on when there is a defect with the system, not when it is operating normally.
The brake pedal hammers back at you when you are going too fast for the conditions and braking causes the ABS to kick in as it senses a wheel skidding. If you're driving in a manner that causes the ABS to activate frequently, then you are not driving particularly well, you need new tyres - or a combination of both :-)
The Haynes 206 manual #4613 (the 2nd one with a black cover and that covers the 206 GTi engine) would be fine for the procedure. My only thoughts would be to make sure the replacement driveshaft is for a 206 GTi180 and that you also buy a new driveshaft seal for the gearbox end. Once a driveshaft has been removed and refitted, the old seal will always leak, meaning you'll end up losing your gearbox fluid. A new seal costs nothing in comparison.
To the best of my knowledge. there is no Haynes manual (or otherwise) that covers the GTi180 engine.

Thought I'd use a more accurate title now I know what a 'sonic ring' is!!
I've had a look under the car now and the toothed ring is indeed pretty far gone with rust. I now have two questions- would the rustiness cause the ABS sensor to mis-read the speed of the wheel and cause the brake pedal to kick back, and a slight knocking noise from the front of the car? Although the ABS loght doesn't come on..
Second, is the Haynes 206 manual -which doesn't cover the 180 GTi- likely to be any help in replacing this driveshaft, when the need arises? Or is there a 'real' 180 GTi book? Sorry, that's three questions.
All your thoughts welcomed!
Alex.
