Harley Davidson Faces Stiff Competition

JOHNSON MARINE, WHO INTRODUCES A NEW LINE OF MOTORCYCLES

Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine, makers of Johnson outboard marine engines and other recreational equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser style motorcycles designed to compete head to head with industry leader Harley-Davidson.

Peter Long, Johnson brands marketing manager said, "We have studied the market and determined that Harley, while highly successful, has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers". Long added, "We at Johnson are convinced that our product hits the target dead center and promises to draw sales away from Harley-Davidson in a way no other motorcycle has been able to accomplish".

The new line of bikes, marketed under the name Big Johnson Motorcycles, will, according to Long, deliver what Harley has only promised. "Our research show that this, a Big Johnson, is what Harley buyers are really after".

At the unveiling of the new line Monday, several current Harley owners agreed. "When I bought my Harley, what I really needed was a Big Johnson," said one Harley owner." But I see now that riding a Harley is no replacement for having a Big Johnson."

Manager Long also said that his company would follow the lead of Harley-Davidson and cash in on a huge market for non-motorcycle related products. "We realize that not every guy can have a Big Johnson," said Long, "But image is very important to people. If they don't have a Big Johnson, they at least want to project the image of having one."

Asked if he anticipated Big Johnsons showing up in the hands of Harley owners, Long said it was unlikely. "I just don't see the need to have a Harley if you have a Big Johnson," he said. "And I can't imagine someone who spends all their resources to acquire a Harley having a Big Johnson. I think it boils down to this - You either have a Harley, or you have a Big Johnson, but you are not likely to have both." "Given the choice," said Long, "I think most guys will opt for the Big Johnson."

Another force driving sales for the company will come from women. A survey of the wives and girlfriends of nearly 1,000 potential motorcycle buyers indicates less than 5% would approve of their partner spending $15,000 on a Harley Davidson. But, when asked if they would be willing to pay the same amount of money to get their partner a Big Johnson, nearly 4 out 5 thought that would be money well spent.

One female present at the product unveiling was quoted as saying, "There is no way I will let Lonnie drop 15 grand on another one of those Harleys, but 15 grand to get him a Big Johnson? Well, that's something we could both enjoy, and it's something he really needs."

Carla Roundheel, manager of the dealership network now being established, said her motto is simple. "I service what we sell." Big Johnson Motorcycles will be traded on the New York stock exchange under the abbreviation PNSNV.

Hi Steve,

I did the same thing. I filtered out the riff-raff by requiring full payment in
cash up front. I had them sign a sales contract and liability waiver that was
binding(or was it), and gave them a 30 minute road test in which I followed them
in my car (didn't own a 2nd street bike). I had a set "test ride" course to
reduce the issues with traffic and pedestrians, but it is still a calculated
risk. You may have technically "sold" the bike, but the insurance and liability
is still yours. I hate to say it but the key is to qualify your buyer as much
as you can upfront, and have some tolerance for the slight risk that they wreck.
Buying a motorcycle "as-is" with no warranty, without a personal test ride is a
lot to ask unless the unit has VERY low miles. Bottom line, when you buy or
sell used bikes, SOMEONE is taking a leap of faith. That is why unless I know
the buyer, I will take the trade-in hit at the Stealer...I mean dealer. I have
a lot more to lose financially now that I am older, so I wouldn't want some
newbie twisting the throttle on any of my stuff. Take Care..Dave A.

thanks Mark.

I have actually done a lot of research since. Someone actually completed a bill of sale, took the cash, and then made it null if the bike was returned in an hour in good condition. Sounds good, but legally would it hold up if something happened?

Even if I am holding the cash value of the bike, my insurance is responsible if anything happens and my tags are on it: injuries, damage to other people's property etc. And past the limits of my insurance I am personally responsible.

I read a lot of horror stories online. My favorite answer was "go to a local dealer and ask to test drive a liter sport bike. Write down what they say and repeat it to the person who wants to ride your bike."

Not being a risk taker and wondering about the experience level of someone buying a Ninja 250. My response is below:

Because of insurance/liability issues I am not able to offer a test ride. I would be more than happy to ride the bike and you could follow or be by the side of the road. You are welcome to sit on the bike, start it etc. but it can't leave the driveway.

I spoke to fellow riders and researched forums and understand this is a hot issue. A lot of buyers want a test drive before parting with their money, perfectly understandable. But there are also a lot of horror stories from the seller's side and the bottom line, even with cash in hand, it is my butt on the line as long as my tags are on it.

I haven't been riding the Ninja as much lately but did ride 65 miles last Saturday (in the rain) to Don's Kawasaki in Hallam Pa where it was serviced. So I am confident it is in good running order.

If the concern is the reliability of this particular bike you are welcome to have a mechanic check it out.

thanks again for looking
,

When I sold my SV1000, I wrote up a contract that said the following:

1) I get a $1,000.00 cash deposit (non-refundable if you crash)

2) I liability waiver holding me harmless if he crashed

3) I held his drivers License.

When he signed it and gave me the cash, I told him to take it out for as long as he wanted. He brought it back about 2 hours later in perfect condition (then bought the bike)

It was kinda of un-settling BUT i figured I wouldn't buy it either IF I couldn't take it for a ride. I will see if I can find the contract I wrote up..

All I can say is you are potentially cutting out a sizable clientele if you don't allow them. Maybe go along with them on the test ride with another bike? Its at least an option to help safeguard yourself. Good luck.

Steve,

That's a really tough decision. I know I wouldn't buy a used bike without test driving it first. At the same rate you need to protect your property. The Gods of riding were definitely with us. Great roads, good pace, beautiful weather, and lots of meat at the end.
I haven't made a pack ride since WVa so it was good to ride with everyone again.

It was also the first group ride for the Street Triple aka Wall-e. He was impressed.

Just rode the wife's new Bonneville SE home from Pete's. I did some of the same curves we did yesterday, very sweet. Three Triumphs in the garage now.

I'd like to thank everyone for coming out and riding today, I had a great time. The weather was perfect, the roads I thought were great and the company was the best. We left out of Pete's with 11 bikes; Kevin, Spencer, Hwan, Scott, Brian, Steven, Isaac, Dennis, AJ, myself and hopefully a new member...Bob. We headed northeast via Harford Road and over to Mt. Vista where our good friend Dave was waiting for us. So now we are 12. Off to Raphel Road, the Jerico covered bidge and then up route 7. Up Aldono-Stepney Road to Rt. 161 and onto Rt. 623. We passed the entrance for Broad Creek Scout Camp, and I got a little nostalgic as I spent many a summer there when I was a Boy Scout. Onto more great roads, Grier Nursery Road, Sharon Road, through Rocks State Park, a hairpin turn on Graystone Road, down York Road to Butler Road and on to lunch at Famous Dave's. The service and food were awesome and we had time to relax and talk. A couple of more back roads on the way home as dessert. So all in all a great day to close out our scheduled riding season. Notice I said "scheduled". Even though we usually don't schedule any rides for the months of December, Janruary and Feb., don't be afraid to post up a suggestion or something if we end up with a nice day. Several of us ride all year long, so..... if you feel the need for some two whellin' let everyone know and we'll ride with ya. So once again thanks to all who made it today because you did make it a great day.

Man - I am upset that I couldn't make it!!

I told Jafo I had to help out the wife with my son's 11th birthday party...I was
outside washing kids tennis shoes & loading mini vans & lo and behold I see a
bunch of "Dirty Rats" coming down Grier Nursery Road.

I was jumping up & down trying to wave to you guys as you went by - did you
notice the "Rooster in Woods"???? I had kids parents that I didn't know giving
me dirty looks like I was crazy!! Then, I had to run my mother in-law down to
Glen Burnie & Brian comes blowing by on the Rocket....

Hopefully the weather will hold & we can sneak in another "un-scheduled" event..
I am even starting to think about playing hooky for a day!!

Glad you all had a great time - Rooster

I agree, it was a nice ride, and the brisk pace was just right. Although my HD
buddy Grant did scrape his pegs once! After switching bikes we have a mutual
respect for each other. I certainly wouldn't want to ride that behind Kevin!!
It was great to have such a great turnout. Glad to see Mark and Dave tough it
out! It's a bitch having sore hands or wrists on a bike. Take care everyone. I
doubt I will make next Sunday's run due to the Fallston Cup for the U8 travel
soccer team I coach. Dave A.

A bunch of "DIRTY RATS" loitering in the bannk parking lot...lol..!!

Thank's again for to everyone for the great time!!!

Hey all, glad to hear that you had a great time. Sorry I couldn't make it, I was

light ending so early this time of year, and when the sun goes down it cools
off pretty quick. See you in the A.M.
