Hi everybody,

Thought you might be interested in the following post from "Mr. Flexit", John Goff.  John probably knows more about these "leaners" than anyone except the people who built them...

FYI...

Leland

PS  The rider that John mentions is on the registry.

Hi Leland!    :-)

There is a PC800 rider in Holland who is buying a late model Flexit sidecar and plans to attach it to his PC800. I am advising him on how to do it.

He imported his PC800 from the US. So clearly his patterns of thinking are not in-line most other European riders, especially those who have an interest in articulated sidecars. He is very clear. He wants a PC800, and he wants a Flexit. Both long time personal goals.

"Chris De Ruiter" <flexit-rider@...>

Have you heard of this guy?

Emacs!

Anybody have any experience with Veleorex side cars on a PC? Looking to hack my
89 and looking at all the options. These seems to be the most economical but
wonder if they are heavy enough for the PC.

Hi Milton,

I think the rig that is identified as having been Henry Hill's might have a Velorex attached.  It is a smaller, lightweight sidecar in any case.

Hi Milton!    :-)

The question I have for you is to define your objectives. So -

1) Are you seeking to add an outrigger to prevent your PC from leaning? or

2) Are you wanting to add a sidecar, because you want to add the cargo and passenger carrying benefits of a sidecar?

Would you prefer to retain your leaning motorcycle?
How important to you is leaning in your motorcycling experience?

Did you know that you can add a Velorex sidecar _AND_ retain your leaning motorcycle?

The lean is not that important. At this point, I am looking for stability and
reliability. I had a Ural and was happy with it except it needed a more
mechanical minded person as an owner.

Milton,

I have a 97 pc800 with a velorex sidecar. It is light, but I had similiar
problems with a heavier sidecar.

Just put dead weight into the sidecar. I found that at least a 100lbs will help
with the rig wanting to fly the sidecar. If you are heavy like me, you may have
to put more dead weight in the sidecar.

I find that the velorex works fine with a rider, of adult size.

Hope that info helps.

Milton,

see if you can get a Ural sidecar. It may work better, since they are heavier.
Will probably need dead weight when running without a passenger.

If it is a solo bike you are interested in, try www.pc800buysell.org  There are over 35 PCs for sale there.  Also Craigslist usually has many as well.

If it is a sidecar rig you are looking for, I'm probably going to sell mine...

Subject: New topic - Passenger floorboards question

Hi Everyone! :-)

One of our FSOG members has just installed a set of front and rear
sidecar mounting brackets on his PC800 as preparation to install his
1998 round-nose Flexit. The rear sidecar bracket is directly behind
the right-side passenger foot rest. This forces the passenger's foot
forward so that only heel of her foot is supported.

So we have need to solve this passenger foot rest problem. One idea
that I came up with was to fit a set of after market passenger
floorboards to the PC800. The rear of the right side floorboard could
then trimmed for clearance for the sidecar mounting bracket and
provide a longer foot rest to support the passenger's right foot.

Basically, we need to replace, modify or otherwise enhance the OEM
PC800 passenger's foot rest so that the passenger's right foot is
comfortably supported, and not interfering with the rider's right leg
and ankle.

Have any of you had any experience in fitting after market passenger
floorboards to PC800s?

Warm regards,

John Goff, The World's only known Flexit sidecar historian! :-)

Hi Milton!    :-)

Do you really want a non-leaning rigid sidecar? If you are (for your reasons) wanting to give up your leaning motorcycle, then please ignore the rest of what I have to say.

If on the other hand you would rather keep your leaning motorcycle, the why not attach your Velorex as a lean capable attachment. Follow the example of Ralph Kalich who makes the Swing lean-capable sidecar in Germany.

http://www.schwenkergespanne.de/

Use Google Translate to translate the web site -   http://translate.google.com/#

It uses 2 Points Of Attachment (POA) using heims joints at the pivot points, and has the additional benefit of being much, _MUCH_ LESS stressful to the frame of your motorcycle. So 2 mounting POAs instead of 4. Velorex have been mounting in this way several times by other home builders. Why not you?

Warm regards,

John Goff, Flexit sidecar owner and historian

Gramps, I have two, PC800s for sale. One is an 89, that needs the rear plastic
put back on and the r&r replaced. The other is a 97, that has the r&r replaced.
It has a Velorex sidecar attached, but can be sold without. I am working to get
some pictures and will post them as soon as I can.

Just joined the sidecar forum and was wondering if there is any place either on
a website or WOF to guide me into possibly getting a sidecar for my PC. Wife
thinks it would be a great idea, but I don't know how much it would cost or how
it would handle on the PC. Any info on this would be great. Thanks.

Hi "boomer9336"! :-)

Thank you for asking this question. For me this is an opportunity to
remind people that you do _NOT_ have to give your normally leaning
motorcycle in order to have the benefits of a sidecar. It is so SAD
that across the motorcycling community that so little is generally
known about how options exist for attaching a sidecar.

The first question you need to ask yourself is: "How important is
your normally leaning motorcycle to you?" Back when you started
riding motorcycles, did you start out intending to bolt-up an
outrigger and enough bracing to _PREVENT_ you motorcycle from
leaning? Most of us did not. In fact, for most of us leaning is a
critical component to the enjoyment we find in riding motorcycles -
that sensation of "banking and flying on the road".

So here it is - There are 3 categories of sidecar types:

1) The traditional rigid framed non-leaning sidecar configuration.
2) Unison leaning sidecars (aka: parallel leaning sidecars) more
commonly with the sidecar wheel under the center of the sidecar body.
Examples would be the EquaLean (USA, circa 1980s), the Fleximum
(Canada), and the Flexit (Holland, 1983 to 2005).
3) And what I call "hybrid" sidecars, because they are a half-step
in-between unison leaners and rigids. Hybrids fall into to 2
sub-categories: Symmetrical linkage designs and Asymmetrical linkage
designs. Both of these use a very normal conventional non-leaning
sidecar with the wheel located on the outside of the sidecar body,
and require a wide tire track width to provide enough clearance for
the inside lean of the towing motorcycle towards the sidecar. Example
of the Symmetrical design approach would the Armec Sidewinder
(Switzerland). An example of the Asymmetrical design approach would
the Swing sidecar by Ralph Kalich (Germany). Wider tire track widths
means increased pendulum effects under acceptation and braking
(especially under severe braking). But there is no question about
it, they _DO_ work. In fact, the Kalich Swing is the most popular,
most numerous articulated sidecar currently in production in Europe,
and probably in the World.

I am an advocate for unison leaning sidecars. I just think that they
work better. And at least for us, our Flexit is the best of the best
of all of the commercially manufactured unison leaning sidecars ever
built. :-) And for the record at least 3 Flexits have been
attached to PC800s.

If keeping your normally leaning sidecar is something that is
important to you, I would invite you join the on-line Flexit Sidecar
Owners Group (FSOG) which is open to all riders / people who are
interested articulated sidecars. :-)

Hi,

Costs will vary all over the place depending on the sidecar and who does the installation.

The original owner that put my rig together had Murray Motorsports in Kentucky build and install the sidecar.  I have a copy of his invoice and, in 1999, it cost him well over $6,000 to do it.

My rig handled like a truck when I first got it.  It almost pulled my arms out at the shoulders during my 4 day ride from Maryland back to California.

I put up with that handling for as long as I could and then called Murray to see what they would suggest.

They suggested I call Peter Smith of Side Effects in Kamloops, British Columbia.  I did.

He raked a new triple tree for me (I bought the triple tree from Service Honda and sent it to him), my mechanic got new fork springs from Race Tech Specialties and about $2000 later, my rig now handles like a dream.  That kind of a change is highly recommended because the PC simply wasn't set up at the factory to handle a sidecar.

My PC rig now handles as well or better than my Ural which was designed from the ground up to be a sidecar rig...

FYI...

Hope that helps.

Hi Eddie,

I don't have the web sites off hand but if you google sidecar manufacturers you should find some.

I have a Murray sidecar on my PC and like it a lot.  Very well made, very professional installation.

Hi Markus

If you send a message to the group (PC800 sidecar group?) a member of the group, he should get the message.  Other than that, I don't know of any way to reach him.  If the site is the ipcrc, then sending a message to that group should reach him.

I just went to the pc800scr site and can't find anything identified as belonging to a John Moore.  Where are you seeing that?

I did see a member with an email address with the correct initials.  I must have had contact with him at one time.  In any case, I am CCing him on this message as well.

I hope that helps.

I suspect you are referring to Rodney Wright.  Otherwise known as "walrus".  He lived in SoCal and had Doug Bingham mount that ex-Harley side car (American Eagle?) to his PC.

But I know that Doug didn't do the bodywork and, last I saw, Rodney hadn't done it either so the bike looked pretty bad with half the plastic missing, etc.

I haven't heard from him in a long time but seem to recall that he moved from SoCal...

Thanks for the quick response, John.  Did you buy your rig from Henry Hill?  If so, I think we talked once before and I just forgot...  Sigh...  Another senior moment...

Markus, FWIW, I've heard complaints about the folks in Washington state (Dauntless?), and a couple about Doug Bingham (mainly that he charges a lot and has someone else not as skilled do the work).  Claude Stanley and I used to talk back and forth when I was on the sidecar forum.  He seems like a good guy.  Heard only good things about the folks in Texas but not a lot of that either.  My two cents on all of them.  John may have more or better info on any or all of them.  He has been driving rigs for many years more than I have...

Good luck.

Leland

Hi Markus,

I suspect you are referring to Rodney Wright.  Otherwise known as "walrus".  He lived in SoCal and had Doug Bingham mount that ex-Harley side car (American Eagle?) to his PC.

But I know that Doug didn't do the bodywork and, last I saw, Rodney hadn't done it either so the bike looked pretty bad with half the plastic missing, etc.

I haven't heard from him in a long time but seem to recall that he moved from SoCal...

Hey Leland,

I emailed you about this a while back and lost track of it. There was a guy who had mounted my same American Eagle sidehack up to a PC and you were chasing him for me...did he ever turn up?

I'm really trying to get this done. Doug B quoted me $850 to build me a mount...yikes!

Summer is coming I want this for fun with the kids!

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Markus
