Hi Folks - I had a phone message from John this afternoon. He sez that he's
doing great. He headed out for the Norton National on the 1936 16H 500 cc
side valve single on Tues am. He was calling (Wed. afternoon) from Red Oak
Iowa ( in the SW corner of Iowa on Rte. 34, just east of Omaha) this
afternoon. He said the bike was holding up better than he was! It was hotter
than Blazes! He was heading in for a couple of hours of AC to recuperate
during the heat of the afternoon & would set out for the Nebraska border
later in the day. He'll be heading up to Rte 20 to cross Nebraska & Wyoming.
He's hoping to be in Yellowstone by Fri. evening or Sat.(where he'll spend
two or three days site seeing)
Take Care - Bob
I got this from Jeanette Howard a little bit ago. While it wasnt the news i was hoping for,,, ie: perfectly paved roads there and back... its not all bad news either. Frank Forster and some others have ridden this route and thought it was fun. I heard from some folks in the Calif club and some locally that there was interest in perhaps going over the mountain to visit the museum at Port Orford. Without makng all the stops Jeanette made (pictures and chatting wth the store owners) the trip would be shorter as well.
Now......... i have heard from a few people that there are various committees who made up a schedule of events for the rally. While subject to change.. apparently there is some expectation that the attendees will follow the schedule. That being said..........Its not my intention to disrupt the event or undermine others efforts. Im simply trying to promote one of the coolest cycle museums around (and Guns, and machinery and Old cars and etc etc ) as well as interest those who might want to ride their bikes from a motorcycle rally to a motorcycle related destination as well as some great sightseeing along the way. That stretch of coastline is unbelievable.
In addition,,, I also have heard from a variety of people who were dismissive of any sort of scheduling of rally events outside of dinner. I suspect the end result will be is those who attend will choose to do whatever suits them. So, as diplomatically as possible ill make the information availible for attendees to make their own mind up. If people would like to ride individually or perhaps a group of people would like to ride over the Mountain.. then thats fine by me.
I did get a large stack of brochures from the museum and ill make sure those get forwarded. In additon i got some maps and detailed and updated ones are on the way.
For anyone who wants to preview the museum you can look at their website online at:
WWW.antiquemotorcyclemuseum.com the physical address is 1235 Oregon St.- Hwy101 Box 751 Port Orford,Oregon,97465 #541-332-0523 or 541-290-4552 90 miles North of Crescent City Calif. 50 miles South of Coos Bay Oregon.
BTW,,,i didnt see any mention ont he rally website about rafting trips or the Jet Boats. For those who are not aware.. the Rogue River is one of the United States most scenic rivers and word famous for rafting and scenery trips. I cant imagine visiting that area and NOT trying a raft or Jet Boat trip. The Rafting is well catered for..... and ill have Brochures and info on that shortly. The Jet Boat trips are one of the biggest rushes you can experience They fly up and down the river and the experience is a event not to be missed.
Hi Doug, I made the drive today. From Port Orford to Galice was 2 hrs 40 minutes. I stopped about 5 times to take pictures and stopped at the Agness store and talked, got you a small phamplet. And talked to the very friendly guy (Scott Fine 476-3818) at the Galice store. I Think he owns it. He is going to as he said: mark every pot hole & turn for you on his map for that detour road and fax it to me Friday! He used to ride. I told him we had heard that the rafting trailers were driving very fast and took most of the road. He assured me his company drives 20 miles an hour which is a little slower than I drove the 1 lane detour that is 13 miles of gravel. He says his raft trailers leave at 6:30am and are done at noon and his drives come back on the detour road in 2 vans which should be outta there by 12:30, he will be very cautous when he gets the date from you. He could not say the name but as he coughed! I heard Affordable Raft Co.'s name and thats who is a crazy driver so I will call them, let know the date and caution them about the motorcycles and will make a note of that! I took the road out to I-5 to come back so I didnt go all the way to Lake Selmac.
Ok..... 1/4 mile before Galice and the Galice Resort, is the detour sign on your left. That begins the gravel road. It is 1 lane, hard pack gravel but a thin layer of gravel on the surface. Some pot holes but you will be going uphill most of the way and I think that is better than down hill in gravel myself. It has alot of turns and twists. 20 mph a good speed for the 13 miles(just my opinon as I drove my car). A ways after the detour ends, there is a great place to stop at the Bear Camp Overlook. For about 35 miles to Agness, the road is soo much better. There are about 50% 1 lane and 50% 2 lanes. It goes 1 lane for a short while, then 2 lanes and so on. I didnt see the scarry cliff drop offs I heard about. It is all treed with mountain on one side or the other. After Agness the roads to Port Orford are great. Total miles from Port Orford to Interstate 5 was 107. Soo, even though I drove my car, I have rode enough to say that in my opinon I would make the ride, with no body on the back, but thats just me! It would be best to get more opinion! See ya, Jeanette

But.. I talked to the Forrest Service today and they said: Bear Camp is 1 lane with oncomming traffic, drive slow and its safe, some detours and they are NOT paved, elevation is 5000+ ft. About 45 miles on this road. then, Agness to Gold Beach is paved, 2 lanes and good road. About 40 miles on that road. > > I talked to them before I got your email so Monday I will see if I can get a map from them, drive it and check on the store, hopefully it will stop raining. It seems with input from the Forrest Service and the Hwy Dept and their map, the only unpaved areas are detours. Also they said the rafting trucks are comming from Galice to about Merlin. I said I would like to put signs out day before the ride that said "Caution-Motorcycles-7/17 Sunday" or something like that and she couldnt comment as it is BLM land but I am sure no one would take then down in 1-2 days. Or maybe your scouts could mount a sign on their bikes?? Or not! So thats what i have so far. thank you so much Doug. Jeanette > >
Kennelly's Gang from the south was the last to arrive at Ben&Joy's for
breakfast. Artie & Mary were first and Ed & July Kerns met 'em at the
front door. I was across the street getting gas for my boat motor and
saw Artie and Ed do the "ain't seen ya in way to long bear hug". Good
friends, old friends.
There is something special about Ben & Joy's breakfasts. The food, eggs
and stuff, are better there than I make or get most other places. It's
like they know what they're doing!? And Robin, "the" waitress makes
eating there personal. I like it.
Davey showed up late. He lives three blocks away, but got there about
the time we were finished eating. His van wouldn't start. Dave and I
spent the day fishing at Dear Creek Lake. You'll have to go the "Ohio
Norton Owners fishing report" for more about that. I will just say that
no fish were killed or injured in 5 hours of beating the water and
bonding. Everybody won.
I got a chance to catch up with Ed and July a little at breakfast.
Their beautiful, big log home is starting to own them. Lotsa work all
the time. And a gang of raccoons invaded the polebarn. Always something.
Hope the ride was as good as the fishing,
Ric
The ONO's Mike Reed and I visited the Still Waters Campground today to
survey the situation, find out the rules and firm things up with the owners.
We will camping in the primitive area along Elkhorn Creek, first on the
right as you cross the bridge coming in. There is water available, but no
electricity. There are no set spots, just drive in and park somewhere you
like and you're home. There are fire rings scattered about, but no firewood,
so if anyone is driving a 4 wheeler down and has some firewood hanging
about, it would be good to bring it. Also chairs, as there are no picnic
tables. It's quite informal and quite a distance from the bath houses. The
cost is $3.00 per person, per day, which I will collect along with Mike
Reed. The Mobile Motel 6 parking is up by the bath houses and has
water/electric in designated sites, but will set you back $14.00 a day.
The camp store appears to be closed, so there is no coffee or food
available on-site. I will bring along a 2 burner Coleman stove and a coffee
pot and Marcia will bring along a coffee pot. This is needed as Skip has
made it quite clear that you don't know what a curmudgeon really is until
you've seen him before morning coffee. Maybe we should charge him for it?
COD? ;-)
You're on your own as far as food is concerned, but there are tentative
plans for a Saturday night mass assault on Jim's Seafood, which overlooks
the Kentucky River in Frankfort. Steve has allegedly made reservations for
+/- 10 people for Saturday night at 7:30. (I think)
The campground rules are pretty simple: No drunken brawls, although it's
OK to drink. No drug overdoses. Curb your pets or, as in Marcia's case, your
spouse. Don't tear up the grass ground pounding in your 4wd. Don't shoot
each other and, if you do, dispose of the body and all the rest of your
garbage in the dumpster on the way out. That's about it. Checkout time is
2:30PM.
We will have a limited number of maps of the area with some of the
plentiful decent roads marked on them available. I'm not sure how many.
Whatever Steve manages to put together.
Steve, Marcia, Mike Reed and possibly myself will be going down after
work on Friday. Skip is planning to arrive at the crack of dawn on Saturday.
That's all that I know of for certain.
Hope that you can make it.
Scott

are welcome. See you there!!
It looks like everyone should have a great time at the BMOK weekend
get-away! Much thanks to Mike Reed an Scott and his compatriots! I
won't be able to attend as I will be in New York attending my oldest
daughters(Heather) wedding on the 25th. Which is also my 29th
anniversary. I wish I could attend, maybe we'll be invited back, that
is if the Ohio boys behave?! Everyone should take advantage of this if
they can, good roads and good people make for good fun! If you plan on
going make sure you let Mike or Scott know in advance so they can make
arrangements! Thanks again BMOK! >>>Chief

His Magnificence, Lord Parsch, has requested some idea of how many

in joining he and Lady Marcia for dinner at Jim's Seafood in Frankfort on

Also, Mike or Ralph, do you have any idea how many of your crew will
make it? I'm planning on riding to the campground this Saturday to look
around, obtain a list of the campground rules to pass out and chat a bit
with the owners. It might be handy if I could give him an estimate of
attendance.
I'm in and I'll be down on Saturday AM. That's 1!

Hi all,
I am taking this opportunity to announce the INOA rally this year is
in Selmac Lake Oregon, near Grant's Pass in the Siskyou Mountains.
This is going to be a big event, the biggest Norton event this year in
the west, and well worth attending. Here's a link or two:
http://64.51.115.14/Rally05.htmhttp://nortonclub.com/http://www.inoanorton.com/welcome.htm
I'd leave the link to the Northwest Norton Owners, (co-hosts) but
there appears to be some issues with their website at the moment.
cheers, Gary J Parker, INOA Canadian representative
If you own or know someone that owns a 96 through 98 Ford with a 4.2 liter
SPi engine take note that they have a problem with coolant leaks that will
cause severe engine damage. My friend Dan just found this out the hard way.

Bob - My truck motor took a dump on me.
If you know anyone with a 96-98 Ford with the
4.2L SPi engine, you might want to have them
contact me. Apparently they leak coolant at the
intake manifold gasket. Which fills the intake
runner. When you crank it, it sucks into #4
cylinder then hydraulic locks. Unless of course
it is running on one of the other cylinders prior
to hitting the water. In which case it bends the
con rod... Wanna know how I learned this tid bit
of information?????? a $3000 lesson

Hi Folks - I'm sorry if you received more than one copy of this message, as
many of you are on more than one of the Norton or other motorcycle lists.
We'll be doing set up at Mid Ohio for the Norton Corral on Thurs. July 14th.
at about noon. It sounds like we have this covered.
Howard White has some 5 gallon buckets that we need to get up to the Corral
on Thurs. Does anyone live close to him, that would be willing to pick them
up & take them to Mid Ohio? or get them to Greg Hasser, Ric Wall or myself
before the 14th?
You can contact Howard at : commando851@...
Lenny Young & the Western Pa. Norton guys are bringing a grill & will put on
a spread at lunch time on Fri. & Sat.
There will also be the traditional cold meat sandwich spread that Greg & Ric
usually put on.
**I haven't heard yet if we are tearing down on Sat. afternoon or on Sun.**
The Corral will be set up in the infield, close to where we were last year.
Vintage Days start Fri. July 15th through the 17th.
Ducati is the featured Marque of the Year.
Here's the VMDs weekend schedule - http://www.midohio.com/vmdschedule
If you intend to go for the weekend, order your tickets in advance at:
http://www.midohio.com/products.asp?cat=16 You save a fair bit ordering in
advance, rather than buying at the gate. It also saves you a long wait in
line.
They also have on site camping at the track, although I have heard it is
rather rustic, primitive, with little shade.
A number of folks just rent one of the swapmeet spaces & campout there in
their motorhomes.
I've heard that a number of folks are staying at either the Dogwood Valley
Campground near Mt. Gilead http://www.rv-america.com/oh/oh-mount.htm (Don
Calvert & Ric Wall already have their spots reserved)
or at Honey Creek Valley Campground just south of Lexington
http://www.hikercentral.com/campgrounds/108986.html where Jack Geers has
his spot reserved.
I've heard the tenting area is a little hilly at Honey Creek.
Don't forget to visit the Ohio Valley BSA guys, who will have their booth
set up in the swapmeet area.
Take Care - Bob

Scott S. and the BMOK
have invited all of us to spend the weekend in the Bluegrass State,
June 24 25
& 26 at Stillwater Campground, 249 Strohmeier Road, Frankfort,
Kentucky.Camping is $3 per person, per
night.
If you are coming from Ohio I have posted maps on
the web
site. The route will be most enjoyable
on a Norton just get gas often and have fun in the twisties. The route is not shortest or quickest but
some consider the roads to be the best in the state for motorcycling.
If you would like to come early and pitch a tent,
stop for
an ice cold beverage, or want to park your bike trailer I live about 40
miles
from the campground.Just let me know so
I can toss you a burger on the grill and have your favorite beverage on
hand. From my place the nearest Bud
Wiser is 9 miles and a "real beer" is over 20 miles away, I live in a
dry county.Direction to Mike's Camp
also on the Web site.
If you plan on participating send me an email and
I will
send my cell number.
Thanks for getting things arranged, Mike and Scott!
I scheduled time off from work so I can make it. It turns out that June is prime vacation time. So, I had to tie up the receptionist and threaten her to get a Saturday off!!
Looking forward to riding some of the roads in KY and see friends again.

Hi Lenny - Sounds great. Greg Hasser likes doing the cold cuts Corral Food stuff. He does not have a computer, so no E-mail contact. I'll get contact phone numbers for his house & barber shop for you.
We'll haven't worked out if the Corral will be broken down on Sat. evening or Sunday afternoon yet.
Brother Bob, I don't have time to do the "chat room" stuff, but I will tell you we are having a WPNO meeting tomorrow and will see what kind of "Nortoneer Power" we can muster to assist the Corral festivities. My goal is to have enough people to operate the drink AND food concession for Friday afternoon (3 to 7), Saturday all day and maybe Sunday "brunch". I may be a little over-optimistic, but I like to aim high and still hit the target. Send me your phone # (or who else I should talk to) and we'll get it squared away. HAPPY SPRING!!
So how's the body holding up after your surgery? Sorry that I missed
the CONO meeting. JB & I went to the Ohio Valley BSA vintage trials &
swapmeet that weekend. I haven't heard anything about what went on,
but I suspect that there was some liquid refreshments consumed.
I E-mailed Maggi the other day. She thinks it's OK for us to use her &
Norvell's canopy for the Corral. We'll hear back after she's spoken to
Norvell. She's not sure if she & Lyssa will be able to make it up to
Mid Ohio this summer. I'll ask Greg if he can pickup & haul the canopy.
Hey Artie! There's no "spell check" on this thing! How'd you spect us
fawnically challenged to exist on this site? : ))
Hey Gary - I'll check. I think I have an extra pin. The T shirts sold out at
the Rally.
