RE: [MN-Subaru] intermittent engine trouble

That only proves the cylinder is dead. Take the plug wire off a dead cylinder.
Put a philips screw driver in it. Hold it about ½" over ground (V/C, cylinder
head, intake). (Do not lean on the fender with anything you like). Does spark
jump the ½"? Test the spark on both sides of the engine. Is it the same
strength? If yes, look elsewhere.

well lets see, there are two coils and each one feeds a plug on each
side of the motor, I know it is not firing on the drivers side because
I can pull plug wires off the drivers side and it does not change the
way it is idling, but if I pull just 1 wire off the pass side then it
dies.

That's not possible... What I mean to say is the ignition coils are of a waste fire design. One coil tower fires the spark plug with 30K volts negative while...

I'm no expert, but the next thing I'd troubleshoot is the ignition coil(s). Not sure what the setup is on your Legacy, but assuming that your diagnosis is...
