HEH! :) :)
Darn Kevin, back to *4*? I am jealous, now :)
Glad you took also to the MKII list. I have now 1 exam left- and an
assignment to hand in (like 35 pages).
Then on to mods!!!! #@*!% been a while!

Hello all !!
I also think this list is a great idea. I am a new subscriber to SOGI's list as
of about a month ago, and find that a lot (most!) of the stuff in the digests is
of no interest to me, since 90% of the posts relate to MkIII Turbos. I was
thinking of unsubscribing from it. Now, I will just subscribe to this list,
since it will be much more relevant, without being a waste of a lot of time.
Will this be available in a digest form as well, so I don't get 10 emails a day?
I think it would be a bit more convenient.
Helene, as you say, I think the MkII is reaching the point now where the cars
are falling into the hands of true fans and collectors. I have had my 83 for
over 10 years and doubt I will ever sell it. (Not even when I get my Porsche 911
:-) I will just need a bigger garage! ) After 10 years with no major problems
and lots of great memories, I still love driving this car!!

Hello Benjamin,
For all that it's worth, I find that the closest resemblance is to the
DeTomaso Pantera. Lotus had their hands on most of the styley cars that
were less expensive than Bertone's in a certain era (beginning of 80's),
but I would feel that the MKII for all of its inspirations was 100%
Japanese. Remember the Z cars? Based on and made by the rogue team of
2000GT... 100% Japanese design, IMO inspired by Jaguar sports coupes somewhat...
Go to panteracars.com for more, unfortunately quite a few have ugly
spoilers but you can see straight ones once in a while. Especially the
front end is very special...

Yeah, I'm kind of "bummed" also.. :) but life goes on. Besides, Eric
Ekberg spends too much time on the MKIV list. I'm happy w/ the "174hp on
paper" (according to HKS) output that my engine is currently producing.
(FYI, the car has not been dyno'd yet, I'm guessing that the real numbers
would be somewhere between 130 - 140hp).
>but I also feel it might create unnecessary waves with the rest of the list

Agreed, I am a bit concerned about this as well. After the "Adrian & his
immature girlfriend" fiasco, the SOGI list does not need more dissension
amongst the group. Having Boost (re: cfm) on the list was bad enough.
>Oh well, not a big deal to me, b/c I'll be on both lists :)
Same here, & will continue to do so, until things really start to get out
of hand. Hope it does not come to that.
>What really cracks me up are the "superiority issues" that VERY FEW SOGI
>members display.
Agreed here also. I don't see allot of this on the list. Now if you read
the MKIV list, then that's another story!! YIKES!!! Yes, I lurk in their
newsgroup archives & read their postings. Usually, I'll read some of their
stuff & laugh and try not to take it too seriously, but it does tend to get
out of hand a bit, even if they are just BS'ing. A fellow MKIII Turbo PacNW
member (won't mention names) mostly does not care for most of the MKIV guys
because of these "superiority issues". There are a few MKIV owners that I
have met through PacNW Supras & Vegas98 that are actually pretty nice &
pleasant to talk to in person (Guilly, Jarrett Humphries, Jim Leifermann)
and a few that are pretty obnoxious (Mark Tozer). Just about every other
non-MKIV member that I have talked to & met in person (Josh Rapier is a good
example, and most of the core members of PacNW Supras) have been very
pleasant & courteous to me. So I guess, this might be a good example of the
"good and the bad"?? Or am I way off base & I have been smoking crack???
:)
>Only thing they messed up with, would be the coveted reliability of the
MkII :)
Yup, the reliability of the MKII's is definitely one of the big strong
points about this car (unless you don't take care of it & let it go to pot).
I had always wondered about this when I bought my car 8 years ago. 5 years
ago when I discovered SOGI & looked at the MK II information that Reg has on
his SONIC webpage & compared it w/ the MKIII, I thought "WOW, there is
practically nothing wrong w/ our cars" I LOVE THIS!!! :D When I started
reading Reg's MKIII info & saw the BHG headache's that went with them, I
thought "Geesh!!! I can believe I'm reading this. Toyota dropped the ball
here". The fact that Toyota still will not acknowledge that a problem
exists I think compounds this even more, unless you happen to be a V6 truck
motor owner!! Hmmph!!!
>I figured there was some type of respect for all generations of Supras, and
for >the most part this is evident.
Same here, at least from everyone that I have met.
>Yeah, my $1,700 MkII is slow, and came with only 160 n/a hp. It runs a mid
16sec >1/4 mile.
Hehe.. yup!!! When I'm at a PacNW Fun Run event & I have to follow the
MKIII Turbo's, I just radio to them that I'll catch up w/ everyone
eventually!! They're pretty good about it. :)
>At the same
>time, my $1,700 MkII is still putting along, with NO MONEY invested in

>REPAIRS).
In my case, I don't think I'll be able to get more than twice what I paid
for the car (8 years ago, I bought mine for $7,900, + tax & other stuff =
$8,500)), I agree w/ the rest. Whatever $$$ I have spent on this car, has
been for maintenance (tune-up's & oil changes) and normal wear & tear items
(tires, radiator, water pump, clutch, 2 timing belts, etc, etc, etc). For
me, this has been THE most trouble free car that I have ever owned, as well
as being the most practical. I can get 3 people in my car in reasonable
comfort (if the 3rd person sits sideways in the back) AND, of all the 4
generations that are out, you'll notice that this one has the most cargo
room!! (cargo ratings: 1. MK II, 2. Tie between the MK I & MKIII, 3. (or 4),
the MKIV).
In short, I'm glad that I bought my 85, this was one of the best
decisions that I have made. I had thought that maybe in a few years, I
would upgrade to a MKIII, but right now I just don't have the time, $$$ &
patience to deal w/ the BHG problems that are associated w/ the 7M motors.
Then again, someday when I win the lottery & don't give a rip about
"practicality" I'll get a MKIV as well. Being a 80 MK I owner for 2 1/2
years before I traded it in for the 85, I can say "I was down at that level
looking up & I know how they feel". I'll still try to help a few MK I
owners w/ what little I can remember.
Anyway, enough babbling & I'll shut up!! Am looking forward to some of
these "surprises" that Matti & Helene have in store for us. Laters...

Awesome Helene!! Yea, you guys be sure to keep me posted....Id love to get
some more power outta my MkII....damn its a sweet looking car :) Here are
few dumb questions:
1. ignition controller..what would it do for me?
2. injection controller//ditto...
Are these just upgrades for the turbo? Or will they actually help my car as
it sits? My car is pretty much stock right now, just a 2.5" Random Tech.
high flo cat and a HKS 60mm catback system. I also have a K&N drop in.
Will these *mods* help me?
Also, I like the etc. etc...the more etc's the better :)

Mikey,
I would say that I agree 110% with you, my only bug with the MKIII being
its weight, and even then I would not refrain from buying a reasonably
cheap one :).
As for contents and reliability I agree but we have a few good surprises
for you MKII aficionados in the future months! Matti is designing an
ignition controller for our cars (almost finished) and an injection
controller. I soon will embark in the detailed flow and thermal
calculations for turbocharging the 5M motor. Also I will redo my drawing
of the brake caliper adapter plate for upgrading the one-piston calipers
to most anything you wish to use.
Etc. Etc.! :)
The reason underlying all this is totally unrational: I *love* the MKII
styling and its unequaled reliability, (bulletproof in fact). The rest
is upgrades :)

Hmm, Im kinda upset that I will not be a part of the coveted 200hp club that
Eric "the rookie" E. spoke of, but I guess Ill make my way along :) I think
its kinda cool to have a MkII only list, but I also feel it might create
unnecessary waves with the rest of the list members. Yes, most of the list
content is MkIII related, and there is a lot of b/s on the list, but do we
really need to start our OWN list? Oh well, not a big deal to me, b/c Ill
be on both lists :) Naturally Ill spend more "value added" time reading the

What really cracks me up are the "superiority issues" that VERY FEW SOGI
members display. In each of the respective eras, Supras were on top, or
close to the top of its market. Why would a simple minded moron actually
try and compare a MkIIIT to a MkII? Of course the MkIIIT is faster, and
more luxurious...because it was DESIGNED to be that way, thats a given!!
Not a difficult theory to grasp. Only thing they messed up with would be
the coveted reliability of the MkII :) I figured there was some type of
respect for all generations of Supras, and for the most part this is
evident.
When cool guys with modded 13-14sec (wow?) MkIIIs start ragging on slow ass
MkIIs, I can only laugh. Yea, my $1,700 MkII is slow, and came with only
160 n/a hp. It runs a mid 16sec 1/4 mile. Your ~$6000 MkIIIT is a bit
faster, and has 225 turboed hp. It runs a low 15sec 1/4 mile. With some
mods (~$1k), you can dip into the low 14s. A few more mods, and the HG

Im not a big fan of the luxo-spots/GT/ etc. package that the MkIII offers.
Yea, I still like em, and respect them for those creature comforts, good
looks and good performance. IMO, the MkIV is the pinnacle of Toyota sports
cars. BUT I still like all other Supras. Some people think what they have
is the best...just becaust its theirs. Whatta joke.

Bonjour Helene!
Normally I would send this off list, but wanted you 'all' to know I am still
here. I
sold my Saab so the Supra has taken over the place of honour in the garage
beside the Hawk. I'm still looking for a good cold start injector, or two,
because
mine is still not 100%.
Helene, I understand you are scheduled to come to Toronto to pick over the
remains of a crippled '82. I hope you will have time to say hello while you are
here.
A bientot!
Bob
YAY! Welcome, Patrick!
I have a question for you 85 owner: where is your knock sensor located
exactly? The 1986 shop manual doesn't detail this, and I could use a clue...?
Thanks,

No hay problema, Ben...
I am sure that this will be a lively place to discuss MKII mods :) Let's
start with a little bragging :)
Our dark-candy-red 1983 Supra is now ->378 000 km<- on its original
engine, and gives no sign of a deathwish (yet). She could use camshafts,
or a head while we are here, but nothing else. And Bob, mind you, the
1982 is not so bad with a little fixes here and there. It has less
kilometers on the clock though. Like 222 000 :)

Heh! Glad to hear you, Jason! About the water temp gauge, I really think
it is related to the sender connector... Have to check a few more things
when exams are over... (gosh am I addicted to this keyboard or what)

Howdy, Chris?
Well, it's not so bad. Before this year, the ones I would see with MKIIs
would be guys too poor to maintain or repair them, let alone appreciate
them. Now it's been 3 owners, including a *MKI* owner, that I met eand
who are enthusiasts like us :) :) Great!!

You forget Bob Shapton! Although he doesn't post all that often he is
very knowledgeable. He restored his MKII himself, as he has done with a
number of other cars and makes.

It's cool to see some focus on the MkII Supras now!!! I was thinking
that someone should start a list like this for a long time now... I was
just too lazy to get around to it myself :-)

Hello MKII friends!
It appears that I have a bad contact with the water temp sender
circuit?! The needle blips and flickers with acceleration
(->vibration?), but is otherwise rock-steady at a tad below mid-point
(her usual).
Matti says he has experienced the same with Carina; I set out to find
the culprit but so far nothing has given. I was starting to wonder
whether it could be just the cluster contact itself??
Any suggestions welcome,

Hello happy few :)
After my exams are over (Tuesday) I will post on this list a little
study of the heat exchanges in the cooling system of our cars.
I plan to include a few schemas I made to explain some of the
calculations. They will be attached as JPEGs. If anyone would prefer
that they be included in some other format please say so I will be glad
to try to oblige :)
Happy driving and don't let the Grinch steal the Xmas spirit :)
