It is around 8K indicated on my tach, in a low gear, might be on the
'swing'. Is it supposed to sound like you are pumping on the gas pedal? I
must say it is a bit startling when you are not expecting it, and a tad
embarrasing

Hey. I'm not complaining, or crashing a private party. If I decide to visit
Ottawa, my nation's capital, on some day in July, I've got a perfect right
to do so unless someone's cordoned off the city :-)

I don't expect to attend the special events or gather up any souvenirs; I
just like seeing a really big gathering of Miatas.

My hat, if any, is off to the organizers; it must take an incredible amount
of negotiation and energy to produce one of these events.

And the handbrake! They don't show the pedals but I daresay the accelerator
is on the left as well.

LOL...

You can't see the handbrake or the pedals on the picture but I'm
pretty sure you're right :^).

Latest news is that even the wiper and indicator stalks are going to
be reversed!

Keep your 14"......... 15 or `16 inch will result in a shorter sidewall and
while there may be some handling improvement for track or autocross (which
you don't do), you will be in for even a stiffer ride and more jarring on
bumps.

You might want to double-check this, because I am not a club officer.
However, in speaking with some of the people involved I am fairly certain it
was said that this will be a Miata-only event. It was commented upon because
it's the first time MSCW's done a single model event.

Around mid-92, I think. I'm going by the age of the archives. Personally, I
joined up in late 1993 so I can't comment on times earlier than that.
Miataville was the main forum at that time. The newsgroup was a later
addition that started sometime around 1995.

A Brazilian driver's license? Let me see if I can guess the criteria to
pass:

- 1 right foot (for the accellerator)
- 1 right palm (for the horn)
- 1 left hand (or more accurately, 1 finger from the left hand, for
signalling purposes)

Am I close? :)

Keep your 14"......... 15 or `16 inch will result in a shorter sidewall and
while there may be some handling improvement for track or autocross (which
you don't do), you will be in for even a stiffer ride and more jarring on
  bumps.

The best way to approach the situation is first off all, decide on
what your most important needs are regards to handling, ride,
and appearance is, then search for different miatas that have
different setup in your local area and take a ride. Then decide
what you like best. It is a shame to spend lots of money on
unwanted modifications. Best of luck

Bout time :) You're showing 8K RPM because the stock tach gauge face
as smaller spaces between the hash marks the closer you get to
redline. Stock face is off about 200 RPM at 4K and 4-500 RPM at
redline.

You have to locate and identify all cup holders in the vehicle, then show
that you can operate the cruise control at 2 mph over the limit.

Even better - you don't need a road test if you have a valid licence from
another country :) Getting a CO driver's licence meant that I had to pay
$14 for the new bit of plastic.

Not in Texas. My Australian licence didn't make the grade - apparently
"out-of-state" doesn't include "out-of-country" in the Lone Star State - I
had to take the pick-a-box and road tests just like any other newbie. Mind
you, the road test lasted all of about 5 minutes - we got half a mile from
the DMV and the tester said "I've seen enough; take us back." :D

Out of state IS out of country when it comes to the lone star state...

And funny that you called it the DMV, 'cause in texas, it's the DPS for
whatever reason. Texans are weird folk...

Course, I'm keeping my texas license as long as possible... Means my
insurance can't find out about certain tickets...

Subject: [Miata] my sick car and a Diff question.

Not that any of you really care, but I feel like whining....

My car has been sitting on jackstands for a couple weeks now. The latest
projects have been replacing the leaking water pump and noisy differential.
I must say, I REALLY want to go driving, and the days left for comfortable
top-down driving are becoming fewer and fewer. I've been driving around a
Ford Exploder, and it scares the crap out of me. That car is NOT safe. It
feels like it's going to roll over everytime I change lanes. And swerves
madly under any real braking force.

I finally found someone to set up the MazdaSpeed LSD for me, (thanks to Randy
Stocker) and I just got a rather frustrating call today. The noise I was
hearing is apparently a pinion bearing, whatever that is. Which means that I
didn't REALLY need to replace the differential. But, I'll have a much better
one, and besdies, who knows how much longer a viscous diff would have lasted.
No word yet on what these bearings are going to cost.

Everything I start to take apart, I find something else that needs fixing. I
told the guys at Mazda South, that before long I'd have replaced everything,
and there wouldn't be any parts left for me to fix.

I found something disturbing yesterday.. While lying under the transmission,
I noticed that one of the bolts on the side of the transmission, which seem
to hold it together, was broken. It's been 50,000 miles since the
transmission was removed. It's one of the long bolts, on the PPF side of the
transmission. Long and thin, runs parallel to the driveline. It was just
lying sitting in its hole. I pulled it out to discover the broken end. Not
a whole lot I'm going to do about it, just hope that nothing else is broken.
I can't imagine it breaking while on the road, so I must assume that it
happened when the clutch was changed. Mazda dealer did it, nice to know they
had the decency to do it right... I mean, if they broke a bolt, wouldn't
they have had to notice?

Now the diff question... When removing it, there was this step in the shop
manual I couldn't understand in the slightest. So I skipped it, and got it
apart anyway.

It has to do with the "differential mounting spacer". It's this spacer with
two holes in it... fills in the space between the diff and the ppf. I
couldn't get it out, so I just had to pry the ppf away from the diff to get
it out. When I dropepd the diff and looked at it, I realized that I couldn't
pry it out because there's this sleve which is seated in one of the bolt
holes. I think this is the step I skipped, but I can't for the life of me
understand how I was supposed to retract it... Or IF I was. But if someone
could explain this, than I might have a little bit of an easier time getting
it all back together... That is, if I could install the spacer with the PPF
in place...

I wouldn't blame the mechanics for the broken trans through-bolt. There is
no reason for the shop to pull that bolt doing a clutch. Also, on my '95,
the same bolt has broken/vanished twice now. It is a high hp car(>300), but
I haven't figured out why that bolt seems to suffer.

Weirdness.. Yeah, I didn't understand why they would remove it. So it looks
like they just break....

Mine is a '91, NA, though I drive it hard. Do you think it's likely that the
bolt below it will break as well? Is it bad to simply leave it? What have
you done with yours?

That spacer is retracted by threading a bolt into it and pulling it
down IIRC. This is detailed in the Mazda factory service manual and
gives thread pitch. That frees the diff from the PPF.

The sleve is in the diff... and is holding the space in place.. Am I
supposed to pull the sleeve completely out of the diff and into the spacer?
This seems weird...

The sleeve will only slide down about and inch if my memory serves.
When you tighten the bolt on to hold the diff to the PPF, that sleeve
is pushed up by the shoulders on the unthreaded portion of the bolt
again to lock it into place.

They're somewhat too large for email, but I can toss 'em on my FTP server
tonight if you haven't got them before then.

This came to our local a/x list today. Considering the VW dealer in
question - Jim Ellis - apparently also has a Mazda dealership, I thought it
worth mentioning here.

They are a little large Keith, 26mb for 1990. It's a moot point anyway as
they seem to be up again:

Anyone wanna guess the name of the body shop that took soooo long to "fix" my
car each time? Nope, still not fixed but I ain't a gonna let them ever touch
her again! I am also well acquainted with the "policies" this dealership has
with Enterprise as well. They often times told me in writing and in recorded
voicemails they'd pay for my rental car...but, you guessed it, I about bought
a car for Enterprise. Enterprise, to their credit, was always hospitable and
gave me the body shop rates and insurance rates even when I paid. They
couldn't believe how I was treated nor how many times I was in there either!
I found the trick was to insist on a PO from the dealership and have it
handed directly to whomever picked you up from Enterprise. Enterprise will
still take your CC info. and thus you can still be charged in the event the
dealership doesn't pay so its not full proof...don't ask me how I know.

I can vouch for the parts department not being up to what we on the list have
become accustomed to from Mazda dealers. They told me several dealership
parts I wanted did not exist and/or that they did not come individually and
I'd have to order whole huge mechanisms I didn't need. I tired to reason
with the parts guy each time but was always treated like a dumb female who
would of course know nothing about cars and was told I didn't know what I was
talking about...even when I brought in old invoices of parts I was replacing
and they could see part numbers. I just laughed each time and left and
called Roebuck/Trussville who always found my parts...of course a whole lot
cheaper (even with shipping from AL) and most often sooner than the
dealership who had only one part in stock I ever asked for (a cup holder)
could get it. The parts guy always said I'd be back when I found out I was
wrong...LOL. Even the body shop with which I found little not to fault rags
on the dealership parts department and says they hate using them (too
expensive and takes too long to get parts) but are contracted to do so. The
body shop (using the dealership parts department) took months to get parts in
that I could have had (and did in one case as I got fed up and paid for it
myself when it took them over three months to get a part) delivered from
Roebuck in a couple of days tops. The dealership is literally at the corner
of the street the body shop is on. The body shop, FWIW, has a much better
reputation in town than the dealership...so you can make your own assessments
from there.

I didn't mention the dealership name nor the body shop name in any of my
posts as I'd hoped mine was an isolated incident and I'd hoped they'd finally
fix my car. BZZZTTTTT If you guys and gals think you heard it all or even
the worst of it you are sorely mistaken! Y'all only got the highlights of my
ordeal with this establishment! I said before and I say again...frequent
this shop at your own risk. I do not have any experience with the VW end of
the dealership. I do know the same body shop works on both, as well as the
Porsches, and the dealership is housed in the same building as the Mazda and
Porsche sales...at least in Chamblee. Seems I'm not alone in my assessment
of the quality of work or level of customer service demonstrated there. I
hope no one else has to experience such first hand. Again, go at your own ri
sk.

Thanks for the link Jon. Not good to know someone else had to experience
this...but at least I know for certain I ain't the only one.

Hello,

Is it possible to replace the lights that have apparently burned out in
my '91's stock radio/cassette player?

My airbag light has been flashing lately. About half of the time I
operate the car it will be flashing, sometimes it functions normally
(just flashes a few times after the car has been started.) Does anyone
know what I can do about this?

Jeff Anderson can do that for you along with a radio mod to improve the

How well is your battery charged. When my battery is weak my airbag
light flashes. I don't have an airbag!! :) Charging the battery
CORRECTLY solves my problem.

Subject: [Miata] Coolent leak

Hello,

My '91 has been leaking coolent for about six months. Shortly after it
first started doing it, it got really hot, around four fifths scale. I
did a compression test it at that time and all of the cylinders were
reasonably close (within 6%) of each other.

At that time I changed the thermostat to a cooler one that I had laying
around - I had purchased it based on the Miata Performance Handbook, but
basically I just added water periodically and it's never gotten too hot,
maybe up to 2/3rds scale at most.

Lately, I've decided to figure out where the problem is coming from and
so I added some dye that glows under a black light and drove the car
around and then looked at the engine under a black light.

The main place that I see it leaking is from the right front corner of
the valve cover gasket. It would seem that there shouldn't be any
coolent coming from there unless I have a blown head gasket.

The coolent then runs down the front of the engine. There might be some
coming from around the water pump (the thing that's below the
thermostat, right?), but it's hard to tell since it seems to be running
down the engine from above that.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Eric

The first thing is to find out why your running so hot.

2/3 up the scale is WAY too hot.

Normal for most Miatas is the 11 or 12 o'clock position. The temp gauge
is not linear and if you are hit 1 o'clock you are starting to run
excessively hot.

That said I would attack the normal things.

How much coolant do you run in your water mix?? Run just enough for the
coldest it gets in your area and in the summer drain most out and run
almost straight water. I add a can of water pump lube to make up for
the lack of lube.

Are your fans running??? Look at them and make sure they are okay.
Someone posted about fans themselves not being any good anymore. Blades
loose on motor shaft??

Lastly, the radiator itself. It is 10 years old. Consider a new
radiator. Get an aftermarket dual core all metal unit rather than a new
stock radiator.

It seems that there are two Mazda shop manuals available for the 99:
expensive and more expensive :-) Actually, it seems that one is a
paperback book that contains service manual and wiring diagrams in one
book, and the other is larger 3-ring binders that has two volumes (service
manual and wiring diagrams) that must be purchased separately. Does anyone
know the difference in the data contained in these two versions (or if
there is any difference). If the smaller paperback version doesn't include
everything the other books have, what isn't included.

I very much prefer the center console design on the '01/'02. In
fact, the ridiculous location of the cupholder on the '99/'00
actually contributed to my not buying a new Miata sooner. I find the
'01 storage bin to still be plenty ample. And, yes, you can remove
the ashtray and still leave the flip up lid in place. Great design
on Mazda's part!

In previous years, the binder version and the paperback version had
identical information. The bonus of having the binder (what I would
personally prefer money not-withstanding) is that the print is much larger
(easier to read part numbers and wiring specifics) because of the larger
pages, and the ability to pull only the pages necessary when working for
easier reference rather than having to sometimes flip through several
different chapters.

Better: I applied for a license in OK (40-second written test and drive
around the block), waited a while, hadn't gotten the license yet, and got
my CO license based on my temporary OK license. Strange that I never got
the OK license, but I didn't need it anymore.

:))))

In fact it isn't as easy. Takes a medical exame, a written test that takes
about 60 minutes and a driving test that takes 10 minutes, including stop
and go at a steep incline. Cost was around 12 USD.

I would expect 90% of the US drivers to fail that test! :)) Since driving
schools have no automatic transmission cars. ;)

Comment on Italian drivers? Let me think ... I always felt at home driving
in Italy. A little bit more civilised than Brazil and people tend to brake
earlier than NY cab drivers or most of the drivers in Brazil. :))

Anyway, he's one of those persons that thinks way more of himself than

Have you ever met anyone on the strip, course or track that thought they
were all that, but when it came right down to the timing lights, they were
just blowing smoke? In my opinion, a good driver will maybe say something
like, "I've been doing this for a while, and I now have my SCCA license",
or "I'm an instructor," or, "Yes, I've been doing this for a long time,
and I've gotten good at this type of racing." BUT, to be inexperienced,
too proud to admit it, and brag? Methinks that would be a recipe for
disaster.

I still can't believe that guy thinks he's an expert behind the wheel in

other than to sit in the stands, and swill beer. >:P~!!!!!!!

Some of us consider $50 from the service manual money well spent.
That way we can answer all of the questions from people who can't be
bothered to buy one.

It seems that there are two Mazda shop manuals available for the 99:
expensive and more expensive :-) Actually, it seems that one is a
paperback book that contains service manual and wiring diagrams in one
book, and the other is larger 3-ring binders that has two volumes
(service
manual and wiring diagrams) that must be purchased separately. Does
anyone
know the difference in the data contained in these two versions (or if
there is any difference). If the smaller paperback version doesn't
include
everything the other books have, what isn't included.

I could, but after scanning 300 pages front and back I'd have to
charge about $90 for the copies to make it worth my while.

The question is not whether to buy one. I've had an OEM shop manual for
every car I've owned in the last 20 years (except for one lease), including
more than $200 total for three separately priced volumes for a damn Toyota
pickup, but this is the first time I've had a Mazda and the first time I've
had a "choice" with two different versions for the same car. My question
is: is the difference limited to sheet size and binding, or is there a
difference in the information?

I am an excelent driver!! I have a Land Rover Discovery and it is the best
handling SUV on the planet(with me behind the wheel). I can take exit ramps
and pull away from Miata at 35mph, unless I am driving the Miata. I can
stop on a dime. Hell I have active suspension and ABS right?!?! That does
not matter because I am the best driver anyway!!!

YEAH RIGHT!! Someone that thinks their SUV handles and stops good is a
recipe for disaster. If you own one(which I do), it is extremely important
to remember that it is not a sports car and treat your cornering and
stopping as an SUV and not car. If I am driving the Miata I do my best not
to have one near me in traffic. Of course there are so many on the road
that it is almost impossible. It seems like every car manufacturer is
cutting more and more cars out of the line up to replace them with yet
another truck. Hell look at the TV lately. Even Mazda advertizes that
their SUV is raised and inspired by sports cars. Then they wonder why
people drive them like sports cars.

I will shut up now. Just thought I would vent after riding in traffic this
morning.

Sure you do -- they just don't win. Lol. You run into wannabe's on the
race track too -- I have found it's usually the person who makes big claims
that spins out, takes a bad line, etc. Folks tend to drown in their own
self-stated expertise so much that they don't listen to those that CAN
drive -- once you stop taking advice, you stop learning and your driving is
very limited -- to the point where you don't stand a chance of winning. So
here's to the self-professed hot shots -- they make the rest of our jobs
easier. ;o)

BW -- I brag about the CAR, not the driver. ;o)

All kidding aside, you're right John. People who think they know all and
are the end all cause accidents on the roadways -- they shut off their minds
and screw up. Driving is a never-ending learning process. Those that think
it isn't have reclused themselves to a dangerous class of drivers. Never
take it for granted that you have it all down, 'cause you don't. I'd bet
that even the pros of autox and road racing don't think they're "all that."
It's just not the right attitude. JMHO, but even a Miata won't save your
sorry butt if you think you're Mario Andretti while driving it -- and I bet
even he doesn't think he's the God of the freeways. =o) Great points you
guys are making about driving -- I hope it wakes up a few minds.
