Cool! I'm glad it turned out to be something simple. If he was paying
somebody to do it the difference in labor would have probably eaten up most
of the cost savings anyway. But those guys who say not to rebuild them are
nuts. I've rebuilt 5 of them, and none has failed a second time. The first
was about 3 years ago. The bore is always like brand new, and I don't even
hone or sand them. The only wear is on the rubber seal.

Subject: [Miata] Battery/odometer question
: I've seen lots of Miata archive material with reassuring comments
: about removing the battery for extended periods of time. All of
: the posts mention that the computer very rapidly "re-learns"
: everything after the battery is replaced. Can someone tell me
: how this applies to the odometer reading? What kind of memory
: element is responsible for holding the mileage data?
I don't manufacture Miata odometers, and would defer to anyone who does, but
it makes sense to me that the values would be stored in flash memory, like
the tiny memory cards that are used in digital cameras and mp3 players. The
data, once written, remains intact even when there is no power applied. The
same technology is used to store phone numbers in cell phones. You can take
the battery out to charge it, and when you put it back in, your recorded
numbers are still there.

I think the reasoning for this is if you are having a shop rebuild the
slave cylinder the labor involved, plus the parts, would roughly equal the
cost of a new one installed. It is always cheaper to rebuild it if you are
doing it yourself.
I work cheap.:)

Whoa! I spoke too fast! It's listed on the Urban Legend site, but with a

Indeed a heartwarming story.

Dennis,
RTV is fine, though most of them get assembled dry. You're talking about the
paper gasket from shifter flange to trans, right?

Ok, the shop manual says to put some sealant where the seal meets the
shifter housing. My question is what type of sealant? Will
high-temperature RTV work?

Subject: [Miata] Halfshafts: Sealed?
So I've been given the name of someone who will set up the differential for
me, woohoo. I opted to pull it myself in order to save save quite a few $$.
Took me about 5 hours, but I've gotten it apart. Now for the question...
While attempting to separate the halfshafts from the differential, one of
them went "plucksh, plop". The sealing cap had popped off, and the
incredibly icky gunk insisde got all over everything. And two of the ball
bearings fell out.
So, I figure I probably can't re-use it... I stuck the ball-bearings back
where they go and I can pound the cover back on... But, getting the feeling
that they're SUPPOSED to be sealed, I figure this isn't good enough...
Anyway, I really don't want to buy and install a halfshaft that I don't
need... So, let me know if you guys think I NEED to do this or not....
If I do, I've got another interesting problem... How in the heck does one
get the wheel nut off when the differential is removed? Or is it possible?
And, if I do have to replace it, do I REALLY have to replace the ABS sensor
rotors like the book says? I just don't understand why the book says I need
to do that, but unless someone can assurme me that I don't need to, I
probably would.
And then.. there's the tie rod ends... The rubber on of them is broken and
gunk is starting to seep out. I probably dealt it the final blow while
replacing the tie rod boot.... These are supposed to be sealed too, right?
Meaning I have to replace the whole thing, not jsut that rubber bit?
And... while replacing the tie rod boots, should I add more gunk like the
sort that's under there since one of mine has been torn for awhile now? If
so, just what sort of gunk IS it exactly...
Thanks,
Berck
p.s. When I put it back together, is there a trick for getting the upper
control arm bolt back in? I was not prepared for the amount it sprung out,
and it looks like it's going to take some sort of massive amounts of force to
hold it together while I slide the bolt back in...

No problem. Put the bearings back in, the cover back on, and you will be
fine.

The nut is staked, so you unstake it first with a screwdriver or something.
Then you put the parking brake on, get a socket that fits (It's somewhere
over 1", 1 1/16 or 1/18 I believe) and a good long bar to break it loose.
For us a 6' pipe slipped over an 18" a 1/2" drive bar wasn't enough (bar
flexed and bent), so we made a tool by welding the socket to a more solid
piece. (tire iron from a wrecker) I've heard that 3/4" drive tools should
be fine.
I'm not too sure about the rest of your questions,

We went up to see the great meteor shower tonight. Given that we were
going to be up there for a while, we brought beer.
Upon arrival, we found our beer bottles were not of the twist-off variety.
Hmm. Look around while my door is open, and ... hey!
So the U-shaped piece of metal that the door latches to -- it's a perfect
bottle opener! I love this car! :)

I had somebody open a beer for me at this past year's Deal's Gap for me
this way, too. :)
I wonder if bwob had anything to do with that little add-on. :D
