The 300Sc was made from 1955 to 1957 as a limited-production fast touring car. It was Daimler-Benz most expensive model, costing 60% more than the legendary Gullwing. At $14,500, it was also the most expensive automobile sold in the United States in 1957. The cars were hand-assembled in a separate building from the factory production lines. The trim was solid brass, with each piece hand-fitted to the car it was destined for, then removed and chrome plated. A few of the Cabriolets were trimmed with burled walnut; others in modestly-grained rosewood. The seats were trimmed in 4-oz Roser leather. Each 300Sc customer was invited to Stuttgart for a fitting before the seats were built. The engines were 200 hp 3-liter overhead-cam sixes, originally designed for the 300SL Roadster, and using the 300SL's durable direct-port mechanical fuel injection system. This model also used the new low-pivot swing axle independent rear suspension, introduced in 1957 on the 300SL. The cars were equipped with the 300SL's large, power-assisted Alfin brakes. The combination of this advanced mechanical package with the superb craftsmanship of body and padded Cabriolet top made for quiet touring at highway speeds. The cars were built to cruise at 100 mph, and, in spite of the majestic architecture, were very capable cars on back roads as well. Only 49 300Sc Cabriolets were ever made; about a dozen of these in 1957.
