Ummm, bumped something then.......as I was saying, good to hear
that all is well, I have a mate who has moved home and also said that
he is 20 miles from the quake, you must be living on top of each other.

They don't call them the "shakey isles" for nothing.

Well I was ready to order a one-off megaphone from Apollo Cones, and their

Scott,

has some megaphones (and lots of other exhaust parts)

If you are referencing the place in Nevada that used to do custom
cone sets and things I think they went out of business quite some
time ago.

Apollo was a newer business and was up and running a short time ago?  They may have either gone out of business or just shut down their web site?

Twas me, and twas the narrow angle V-engine I was referring to.

All Lancia narrow V engines were SOHC with rockers; the later
ones had "compound rockers", not the Honda RFVC head of
the 80's & 90's.

Other than USAF researchers publishing their proposals of OHC and DOHC before ww1 here is an interesting piece of history on OHC
I also think in the ww1-2 era HD made an OHC racer as well but can't find reference to it right now.

Among the early pioneers of DOHC were Isotta Fraschini's Giustino Cattaneo, Austro-Daimler's Ferdinand Porsche Stephen Tomczak (in the Prinz Heinrich), and W. O. Bentley (in 1919); Sunbeam built small numbers of racing models between 1921 and 1923 and introduced one of the world's first production twin cams in 1924 - the Sunbeam 3 litre Super Sports, an example of which came 2nd at LeMans in 1925.[2] The first DOHC engines were either two- or four-valve per cylinder racing car designs from companies like Fiat (1912), Peugeot Grand Prix (1913, 4 valve), Alfa Romeo Grand Prix (1914, 4 valve)[3] and 6C (1928), Maserati Tipo 26 (1926), Bugatti Type 51 (1931)

I think the only new in the Horex-engine is the triple-overhead-camshaft in
combination with a narrow 15° VR-engine. All other OHC or DOHC-concepts are
(nearly) as old as the combustion engine. The Horex has radial 3-valve heads
with central sparkplug, but I could not find out, how the valves are actuated:
Direct by bevelled camlobes and tappets, or arms.

Cheers,
Hans

The famous Harley 8 valve race bike ??

There is reputed to be at least one of them that came to Australia
that is unaccounted for. A couple of years ago I was on a ride in
the countryside with some friends and we passed a rusty old race
bike chained to a gate post with a FOR SALE sign on it.

My mate nearly tail-gated me , I braked that hard. Turned out to
be a bitsa, a Harley V-twin shoe-horned into a Harley 350 single
frame and set up for flat track racing. It belonged to an old guy
who had recently died, his grandson has cleaning out his house
and shed, and just pushed it out to the road and put a sign on it.
( Whilst the old boy was spinning in his grave ) It wasn't the
missing 8 valve race bike, but it might have been.....

I bought the bike for $1,000 and got a Goulding sidecar chassis
thrown in.

I had a narrow angle Norton twin once. . . .    Of course it was supposed to be a parallel twin and the Vee direction was perpendicular to the normal planes of rotation but that is the way stacked lack of tolerances work.

Cyclone, Excelsior and Reading Standard all made ohc v-twin
61ci (1000cc) oval track racers.
No throttle control, just a magneto kill button (ala Sopwith Camel etc).

http://www.statnekov.com/motorcycles/mcphotos-frames.html

When it appeared in 1914, the Cyclone was wickedly fast, but unreliable.
So fast, they refused to believe the speed records it set.
(~110 mph, on a dirt track oval).

Someone on the GoldCoast has an 8 valve Indian.
Been offered a fortune for it....

A certain Mr Daimler built a very narrow v-twin engine (15° ?) before most
folk had even heard of "internal combustion engine".

Nothing new in the world ?

Whether it was in a car or bike is a good question.
Maybe they hadn't been invented yet ....?

Dan, thanks for that. I saved off those photos as I figure they are
the best set I'll see for one of those bikes.

If I had the spare cash I'd be interested in the bike, but since I don't
someone else will have to get it.

The Enduros had cast wheels as well as disc brakes. I think the
wheels were by Tabloc.

"snowflake" Wheels by Kimtab - the story back then was the Dealings with ROKON
pretty much put them out of business.
The wheel on bike I bought as a "demo" from a local dealer had been bent during
an enduro down south (1974?)

A descendent of the Kimtab designer (1_2Many) is contributing to This link.

That looks like one of race versions derived from the first enduro/cross country
models. There were factory MX (Cobra) and I think even flat track models. I
believe Kevin Cameron may have consulted on some of the engine mods. The Sachs
factory cylinder porting was pretty tame. Odd thick section aluminum con rod
with bronze bush pin end, and pressed in BE race too.
