Thanks for the reply guys. I found a replacement. Press out the old one and
install a new one with retainer clips on the inside and a grease fitting. It is
made by Rockford stock number 430-10A, should be obtainable from any real parts
house. Thanks again, Ted

Ahhhhh Rob,

You're forgetting about people like "Drivetrain Industries" in
socal. They make an aluminium driveshaft for all models of the RX-7.
They used my '87 T-II for the prototype. The thing has massive
U-joints, is made of aluminum and the shipping weight was only 13 LBS.
I asked the guy if he wanted me to try and break it and he just
laughed at me! If I remember right, the price was around $350. .And
yes light rotating mass includes the driveshaft. Ten minutes after
installing mine, it got away from me and I ended up stalled across two
lanes of freeway looking out the passenger window at a poopload of
cars coming at me. Oh, and the huge Spicer U-joints are easily replacable.

hello,
Just curious if your car is an automatic. I have a good driveshaft out of
a 91 vert. It is low mileage. Just taking up space in the garage. Thanks,
Tim

Any shop that does driveshaft work should be able to do this for about $350.

Keep an eye on your fluid levels and watch to see which fluid level is
dropping. Probably oil smoke which tends to go away after the car warms
up. But could be coolant also. Those are the 2 most likely causes of
smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Brakes are prob. a coincidence.

The smoke comes out of the exhaust pipes. I have had several responces telling
me it is the power brake booster. Thanks, Ted

Stick or auto? Does this car have an ABS pump, by chance?

When I first read this, I wondered if your brakes where somehow locked, but
then depressing the brake pedal wouldn't help. I have had 86 and 90 model
years, and the rear calipers can/do sometimes become stuck. A leak at the
master cylinder shouldn't appear like this, since there is nothing hot that
the brake fluid would drip on to on the driver's side. The other thing to
check is if the ABS pump is leaking. That does sit over the exhaust
manifold, more or less.

However, you could have a bad transmission fluid leak, and that fluid does
get spayed onto the exhaust with the car in motion.

If none of this is plausible, then you'll need to put the car on some jack
stands, get a flashlight, and start looking.

Regards,

Rob

Need more detail to respond effectively.

Which year X-7?
Front or rear brake?
Where is the fluid going?
What exactly stops when you depress the brake pedal?
What else has been changed?
Has the system been bled? Can it be bled?

There is a brake rod adjustment when you replace the master cylinder. You
would have to remove it again to check the clearances and adjust according
to the manual.

Rob

I'm having trouble finding the right muffler for my son's '88 GTU.
We have a new 13b with port work, Racing Beat road race header
and pre-silencer. I've tried straight-through glasspacks and low
back-pressure chambered units and they're too loud and don't have
a good tone. What mufflers have you guys using to reduce back-pressure
and produce a nice rich tone? Oh yeah, I can't spend a lot of money –
I mean a lot MORE money. ha ha
Thanks

I've figured out what the problem was. I reset the distributor 1 tooth
in the retard direction and I was getting worse so I know it was set
correctly in that aspect. After taking a step back and going back to the
car with a fresh head, it came to me. Check the vacuum advances! It only
made sense since the car starts up perfect then advances after starting.
I unhooked them and capped the solenoid and that was it. for some reason
the vacuum advance kicks in as soon as engine vacuum is present. My
guess is that it has something to do with incorrect tachometer readings
or somehow ties back into that same problem. I also noticed that the
leading and trailing were not firing at the same time now. It appeared
as though they were while they were activated by the vacuum advance. I
got the leading timing correct and was in the process of checking the
trailing and then I ran out of gas. The carb has been sitting around for
13 or 14 years so something is not going to be right. Dry carbs must be
thirsty or something. I'll post an update if I figure out the vacuum
advance issue. Thanks a bunch!

I have a 1979 car and it has an 83 engine and distributor. I've been
tracing wires and labeling them because the person before me did a hack
job on it. Anyways, I was trying to set the timing which was 25+
degrees advanced on both the leading and trailing, from my
understanding, the car shouldn't run at all. I got a timing light and I
adjusted the distributor until I I could get it as close as possible,
but all the way retarded was still not enough to get it on the money. It
is still 1/2"-3/4" off on the bely pulley and I image this equates to 10
degrees. Also the leading and trailing timing are firing at the same
exact time and my tachometer doesn't work in the dash. What can I do to
get the timing to retard enough and how do I get the tachometer to begin
to function properly. I've followed the wiring diagrams in the 1983
service manual to set up the ignitions and I've compared it to the 1979
service manual so I could have the proper wires from the tachometer, key
switch, and resistor blocks. Any ideas?

Chad R.

Yep! Must agree!!! Nothing like driving your rotary topless. I actually
did it yesterday. Gotta love California for the warm winters! Mine's
a '91 triple black. Still wish it had a turbo like the ones in Japan!!!
That would be sweet, but I still love the beast just the same! Sure
gets better mpg than my turbo II's and my 3rd gen!!

P.S. Hey Frank...My husband has a 1974 repu. (his very 1st vehicle)

I agree with the Conv. experience. Mine is a Sunrise Red '88, however, I
still miss my Gen. one.

My past Rotaries include:
New 1972 RX-7
1974 Rotary Pick-up (one time outperformed a 240Z!)
New 1976 RX-4
1984 White Gen. 1 RX-7

1988 Red RX-7 Conv. (now own)
Also, have 1998 MPV AWD All Sport in the garage.

Hello group,
I am a long time RX7 enthusiast. It began in 1988 when my wife and I
bought matching 10th anniversary 2nd gens, but ultimately got rid of
them for other cars. In '96 I picked up a '93 3rd gen and am a
veteran of over 25 drivers ed weekend schools with it.
When the RX8's finally came out, I was first on the block to own one,
as I had been following the production of them for about 3 or 4
years, and now that's my daily driver.
Sold the 3rd gen, but picked up a '79 IT7 race car for continued use
on the track.
Most recently I picked up from my 73 year old neighbor a pristine '84
RX7 GSL SE, 13b, fuel injected with 57,000 original miles.
Now, I'm thinking about thinning out the herd some to make room for a
Spec Miata racer.
Any help or ideas are appreciated.

I'm still waiting for lightweight rotary shaped plastic oil filler caps.
Aluminum
has been done to death and gets too hot to change oil.

Just a clarification. Central Coast Used Japanese Engines does NOT rebuild their
13b's. They get 30,000 mile engines from japan and sell them with a warranty as
well. I've put 1 in each of my 2nd gen. turbo II's and have never had any
problems. However, I did get ahold of 1 from them that had a bad vibration, they
got me another with no hassles and it's great! Way cheaper than going through
the Mazda dealer!

I wouldn't worry about price so much as reliability if I were you. The
only place i would get a rebuilt rotary from is Mazda. It's About
$2400 and comes with a 1 year unlimited mile waranty. I've heard bad
things about 13b's purchased from other places that rebuild them.
