Thanks for the reply guys. I found a replacement. Press out the old one and
install a new one with retainer clips on the inside and a grease fitting. It is
made by Rockford stock number 430-10A, should be obtainable from any real parts

Ahhhhh Rob,
You're forgetting about people like "Drivetrain Industries" in
socal. They make an aluminium driveshaft for all models of the RX-7.
They used my '87 T-II for the prototype. The thing has massive
U-joints, is made of aluminum and the shipping weight was only 13 LBS.
I asked the guy if he wanted me to try and break it and he just
laughed at me! If I remember right, the price was around $350. .And
yes light rotating mass includes the driveshaft. Ten minutes after
installing mine, it got away from me and I ended up stalled across two
lanes of freeway looking out the passenger window at a poopload of
cars coming at me. Oh, and the huge Spicer U-joints are easily replacable.
