Steve,
I got a big bottel of Stabil and used it on all the old cars.
The other thing recommended for rodent control is dryer sheets like
Bounce. I got a box of store brand and put several in each car
interior, trunk, and will under the hood once I'm sure of not driving
them for a while. This just went around the Healey list. Some say it
works, others not. At least they smell better than moth balls.

Steve,  I do use Sta-Bil every winter in my B and I did do the "moth ball" thing when I had a rental garage in downtown York years ago.   I figured it couldn't hirt.

Does anybody do the "moth balls" or "Irish Spring Soap" drill?

A couple of weeks ago I visited a local one man body shop located near
Yorkana, PA. That is close to Sam Lewis State Park where we had the
club picnic some years ago. It is in eastern York County, not too far
off of US 30.
The shop is called Bluestone Auto Body, owned by Dave Colvin. He is
familiar with British cars and has the capability to do metal work
(welding, fabricating, shaping), body work, and also paint work with an
onsite paint booth. He is not just a collision guy, but also does
restoration work on old cars. I've seen an MGA in his shop, a Rolls
Royce, Volvo 122Ss, and all manner of other British cars. His uncle is
Taylor Miller who has an extensive collection of British stuff.
If you have a job that you want to get quoted, make sure that he comes
and sees it, or you take it to him. Like most anyone else, a
description of the work necessary will get contingencies added on. He
quoted an MG TD of a friend and lost out because he scared him off with
a high price because he was quoting from a description and never saw the
car. He must see it.
Contact info is 717-600-8533, located at 146 Bluestone Rd., York, PA 17406.
It would be worth a visit even before having him quote, just to see his
setup.

Dennis,
In no way was I trying to pin anything on you and Jeff. If anything,
you guys did your job too well, so when the inevitable happened, it was
sorely missed. I doubt if anyone blames either of you. Most anyone
with any sense understands that it is a lot of work, especially to the
high quality that you guys had. What Steve is doing now is also a lot
of work and I certainly appreciate it and try to help when I can. It is
a fact of life though that quite a few were shallow enough to give up on
the club after the demise of the Mailgram. Of course they were the ones
who would not do anything to take up the slack.
Hope to see you and Carol at Triple-C.

The main point I am trying to make is that we can't get "new blood" by going to shows that are only for "us".

We can't get new interest in these classics by showing them off to our fellow members and members from other British car clubs.

We have to venture out and mix with the other vehicles.

As far as Rick leaving, I asked him a few times to re-join.  He said he's too busy.  he has 2 B's.  The V8 that he did and a really nice '78 B that he did a weber conversition on.  He does his own engine work and is quite meticulous and knowledgeable.

If Larry or Gloria have members e-mails I think we should take a shot at sending yahoo group invites out to everyone.  i'd be more than happy to help with that.

I tried to get a college kid at e-town college to join.  He has a "B" that he is working on.  he saw mine this past September next to my garage because I was waxing it for a little show in E-Town so I know first hand that there are young people interested in these.

The Volvo 1800 was in deed red and the guy who owned (can't recall name) has had it since '72 if I remember right.  I have a bit of "CRS" disease.

As for the yahoo group, invites to join for every member who has an e-mail address should be sent out if we have e-mails on file.

If people don't want to receive separate e-mails when they join they can at least get what is called a "daily digest" that lumps all e-mails from each day into one e-mail.  Daily digest doesn't support attachments but at least they'll be notified of upcoming events or important items.  Only having 33 members on the group isn't very good representation of the membership.

Brian,

With the weather the way it was, the turnout was pretty good.
The guy with the BV8 is Rick Benson. He was a member of Lanco some
years ago, but somehow got disenchanted. He's always cordial when I
talk to him, so I'm figuring I'm not the one who pissed him off. At
least he's out there with it showing it to people. We did lose quite a
few members when the Mailgram newsletter went by the wayside, but I
think that he was gone before that.

I completely agree that we should get out and go to some of these local
shows, as long as they have classes for our cars. I went to one with my
black Healey this summer and it was a waste of time because they didn't
have any foreign or sports car classes. It's also a bit difficult to
have conversations with people who voted for a pink and white and chrome
'41 Willys as best of show. Another I went to with my Volvo 1800. I
won the foreign class by default, being the only foreign car there.
One of the ones that we should push next year is York on Wheels, which
was a very nice show with almost everything there, from tractors to
classics, muscle cars, Corvettes, trucks, York-built cars, motorcycles,
etc. A foreign car presence get classes especially for our cars. This
year they were lumped in with the others. A Healey did win the '60s
class. I'll keep everyone informed as I find out more about next year's
event.

Was the 1800 at Manheim red? There's a couple of red ones in Lancaster
County, one being John Holtzapple, current pres. of the Volvo Club of
America. His car is pretty much bone stock. Bob Stadel of Stadel
Motors also races an 1800. And then in Marietta is Swedish Motors owned
by Rich Kushner who races a 122S.

As for the Yahoo Group, I think that it is a worthwhile resource, but
have yet to convince everyone else. Perhaps Steve Dellinger could put a
short blurb in the BMCCN each issue with a link on how to join.
Something like "Lanco members, join the club's Yahoo Group,
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/lancomgclub/join." I don't know if
he has total editorial control of what gets sent to them, but I think
that he does. What do you think, Steve?

All,

I don't see much benefit in trying to figure why one member leaves and others stay in any organization. It happens -- for a myriad of reasons, in EVERY organization.

FWIW -- the oldest LANCO membership file I have is from July 2004 and Rick was not in that. To the best of my recollection he moved on LONG before that so you can't blame his leaving on lack of the Mailgram. BTW, you (collectively) are not going to guilt me into the belief of not having a newsletter is Jeff and my fault -- we did our duty, arranging our personal lives around mailing deadlines for 6 years, and Gloria did the newsletter for 17 years before that. When Jeff and I had enough, there were ~200 members in the club, more than enough to find at least 1 to get off their dead ass and volunteer if it means so much.

I do agree with Brian, and Charlie, we all need to 1) get our cars out on the road instead of in garages - whether it be to local shows or just going to pick up the pizza (did that last week and "got corralled" by curious car nuts for 35 minutes talking and asking questions - to the point off having crank up the oven to recook the pizza when we got home). 2) get younger people involved - I've taken the neighbor's 9 and 12 year olds for rides, had them over to the garage etc. Harold Roeth, who does (did?) the national MGA magazine, his really big into that. hello everyone....or at least 33 members that might have their settings set up to receive e-mail.

I think I recall Larry telling me at Bob's house that we have around 120 members but used to have around 200.

Why don't we have all of our members on this group receiving e-mails?

Any way....back to the intent original intent of this message....The Manheim Car Show in Manheim, PA

THIS IS A JUDGED SHOW WITH PRIZES.

Mostly Hot Rods/Street Rods, 60's and 70's muscle cars, 50 American Classics, some pre WW II cars

However there were four foreign cars.  A Volvo 1800, a BMW 2002 and two MG B's

Since this is a JUDGED SHOW they had things in "CLASSES"

The Volvo 1800 won "FOREIGN EUROPEAN CLASS"  (redundant title?)

One of the B's won "SPORTS CAR CLASS" though I do not know which one it was.

Both B's were 1978 with rubber bumper and really nice shape (one yed and one yellow similar to Gloria's B).

I could not locate the owners to find out who they were (names) but I do know the owner of the Red B was the same guy that had the modified B with the Edelbrock V-8 that was at this summers ATOB and he's from E-Town.  I can't recall his name.  Older fellow with white hair, white mustache and silver rimmed glasses and a very fast and intense talker who likes to talk.

The yellow B had a working 8-track radio in the dash, which might be a clue?????

Anyway, this show was rained out 2 times before and just squeaked by today.  It was from 10 to 2.  I got there around 12:15 this afternoon and there was a good crowd right up until the end because that is when they announce the winners.

THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHY WE NEED TO GO TO OTHER SHOWS AND REPRESENT OUR CLUB.  I know the guy from E-Town who has the modified Edelbrock V-8 MG B is not a LANCO MG CLUB member and has no interest in being a member (bad experience in the past maybe ?) and couldn't find the other B owner to ask him if he was a member.  If a handful of our membership would go to these shows and enter their cars and bring LANCO MG CLUB membership forms we might be able to increase our membership to those few MG car owners who enter shows like this who are not yet members of our club.

There was also crowd interest in the Foreign cars.  The Volvo 1800, BMW 2002 and the two MG B's where all beautiful examples of vehicles from "over the pond".

We have got to get out and go to other type car shows and show off our stuff!

This is not meant to anger or offend anyone...just see tthings from a different point of view.  We are not getting new younger membership...we need new blood or we won't exist as a club very much longer.

Howdy!

I added my 2009 Poker Run Pix, ATOB 2009 Pix and pix from Ludwig's Corner show.
Even though this last item is not a LANCOMG Club event I wanted to show pix of
some of the British cars at that show.

I'd like to second that!

Jo and I had a very enjoyable day.  Winniing was nice too!

Thanks to everyone involved in organizing this and special thanks to Bob McFarland, his wife Peg and there son for everything they did.

We would have stayed later for the camp fire but had to get home for Jo to pick up her girls from work since they are not yet driving.

I have a bunch of pictures and will be adding them later tonight.

I have uploaded some pictures to the photo area of the group of the
Poker Run on Sunday. See them here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lancomgclub/photos/album/428879522/pic/list?mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc
Or alternatively you can click on a link somewhere on this email to go
to the group and then to the photo area.
Any of you who also took pictures and want to add them may do so to the
existing album.

If you didn't go, you missed a scenic, no pressure drive that ended at
Bob McFarland's house where he treated us to a nice picnic type meal and
later a campfire. It was great, probably because ending at a place like
that gave us time to socialize in a nice setting.
Thanks to all who had anything to do with it.

Sorry for the late response. I've been at Fall Hershey since Wednesday AM.
There is a link there, but is easily overlooked. If you click on the
"members area" button, several other links come up and one of them is to
the Yahoo Group.

Charlie,

I think the website should have a link on it to join the Yahoo Group if it doesn't already along with information sent out via post card when members renew.

The wenmaster of the site should be able to put a link on the LANCO website quite easily.
